The only similarity is that they're both short piano ballads. Seriously. The mood is entirely different, the tempo is entirely different, the melodies are in no way reminiscent of each other. FFH is as much of a WFS rip off as Surrender to Reason is a rip off of Surrounded.

Given the nature of WFS/LTL and FFH/BAI, I think there's definitely grounds for comparison there (not in the Thiago ZOMG REMAKING IAW kind of way), although side by side I agree they're not that similar aside from being piano ballads.

I am pleased with the poll results thus far.

They are also both used as leads to a longer song that references their melodies.

FFH is nice, but WFS is a great song even on its own.

Well... from that standard we should compare them to Vacant/SOC also :-\. I agree with 425, aside from both being piano ballads, there's nothing similar about them. And while BAI and LTL have clear similarities, the reprises are done in a completely different way, on Breaking All Illusions it's more like a nod similar to The Mirror to Space Dye Vest, and on Learning To Live the band actually jams to Wait For Sleep. The BAI/FFH stuff is more similar to all the reprises DT have ever done on the songs on their albums(Octavarium, Systematic Chaos, etc.) than LTL.

Agreed, actually. I guess this is the place for me to admit it, since it actually bolsters my point here: I've never actually heard at any point part of Breaking All Illusions where I thought it was a Far From Heaven reprise. I am basically taking people's word for it that such a reprise actually exists. And both of these songs are in my top ten.

Meanwhile, in Learning to Live, the reprise screams out to even a first time listener: "HEY, THIS IS THAT WAIT FOR SLEEP PART!"

Invisible

It's not a proper reprise as I said, it's at the very end, at the 11:30(more precisely 11:32) mark. Da Da Daaaaaaa / Da Da Daaaaaaa / Daaaaa, which is a part of Far From Heaven. That's it, A LOT more subtle.

425

Okay, now I hear that, but I always just considered that "the great big symphonic outro of brilliance." Like I've had that exact part stuck in my head before and never made the FFH connection until just now. Whereas, as we've said, with LTL, it's very obvious.

Vacant/SOC does have a lot more in common musically, and does follow the similar structure of the shorter piano vocal ballad leading into the longer epic, but I guess the fact SOC is an instrumental sets the duo apart.
I would rank Vacant and SOC much higher than any of their respective counterparts though. :tup

The part before it is part of the reprise too -- people always forget about it for some reason.

"You can't imagine" -> "Embrace the days"

I don't know how I would rank them, I love the three of them, well, maybe Far From Heaven not that much actually. SOC is an awesome instrumental although I wouldn't compare with the other two as it is a different beast all together, but Vacant is right up there with Wait For Sleep for the "best short ballad" contest.

And theseoafs, you're right! I can't believe I didn't notice that :o. I guess you always learn something new :D.

Broken record here but Wait for Sleep, not even close.
