What is your favorite 12 Step Suite song?

The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
The Root of All Evil
Repentance
The Shattered Fortress

Laughingplace56

Which 12SS song is your favorite? Rank them 1-5 after you vote. I won't vote yet since I'm not done with my top 50 list and don't want to give anything away  :)
Also, if this thread already exists, I didn't see it

Sycsa

TGP easily tops them all. The rest, while they all have their moments (except for Repentance, which is boring), are flawed. Really looking forward to hearing TSF live.

Tom Bombadil

My order:

1: TGP
2: TSF
3:TRoAE
4:TDS
5:R

I do not get the hate TSF gets. I love the song and think it is a worthy conclusion to the suite. Glad they play it live this tour. TGP is the best one, however, one of my favourite metal songs of all time.  I only slightly dislike R. Not because it isn't metal (a lot of the best DT songs are not exactly metal), but to me it is just a bit boring.

genome

TGP got me into the band when it came out, I had just turned 13, and it was the first song of theirs I heard.

So, that's my number 1.

DarkLord_Lalinc

1. TGP
2. TROAE
3. Repentance
4. This Dying Soul
5. The Shattered Fortress.

I don't get the love for Repentance. It's boring and I can't get behind the low deep voice used in it (and TSF). TSF is in the 40s on my top 50 list, but it should be awesome live.

RoeDent

I'm going for Repentance, because it's a nice oasis of calm, and the harmonies during the final 3 minutes are beautiful.

1. Repentance
2. The Shattered Fortress
3. The Root of All Evil
4. The Glass Prison
5. This Dying Soul

Because I can. I'm firmly in the prog camp, so the heavier, "metal" songs are lower-ranked for me.

Oddly enough, I don't get the hate for Repentance. Seldom do I see it getting any love at all. :lol

It's a really good song and when I'm in the mood for it, it keeps my interest throughout. I only really have two issues with it: that it requires me to be in that certain mood, and that it drags on for a bit (though not painfully so).

Gonna have to go with the crowd and say TGP as my number 1. Followed by:

2. This Dying Soul
3. The Shattered Fortress
4. The Root of All Evil
5. Repentance

1. The Shattered Fortress
2. The Glass Prison = The Root of All Evil
3. Repentance
4. This Dying Soul

Zyzzyva17

1. The Shattered Fortress
2. The Glass Prison

The other 3 are all in my bottom 15.

Crow

1. TRoaE
2. TGP
3. Repentance
4. TDS
5. TSF

all good songs. The top 3 are all amazing songs too btw
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

I like them all, but The Glass Prison is definitely the best. Although many ideas in the song became a trademark thing for DT, back in the day it was pretty experimental, the first of it's kind in DT world. I love the almost wacky patches Jordan used in select parts. It's probably among DT's heaviest songs, and despite being very guitar-driven, still has enough keyboard prominence to make it interesting.

1. The Glass Prison
5. This Dying Soul

The other three are inbetween. I'm tied between them. I'm not a fan of the shreddy ending to TDS. I refuse to call in wankery because that just sounds silly, but I do find that it lacks memorable melodies for the most part. It feels like they were trying to make a really intense, instrumental ending, which usually yields good results with DT, but I feel like this one was a miss for me, personally.

I can't wait to see The Shattered Fortress live, let alone with Space-Dye Vest, at my very first DT show! :caffeine:

yeah_93

The Glass Prison for me. This Dying Soul comes next.

wasteland

I can say That The Shattered Fortress was a blast live! Unexpectedly good song for some stage to crowd excitement! However, my favourite remains The Root Of All Evil, by a pretty large margin. I don't care for the other three pieces, I hardly ever listen to them.

I thought this would be overwhelmingly TGP and I was right, as for my ranking:

1. The Glass Prison
2. The Root of All Evil
3. The Shattered Fortress
4. Repentance
5. This Dying Soul

TGP, no contest.  One of those DT songs I just can't get tired of.  2nd best song is probably TROAE for me, then TDS.  (Those last two are basically a tie, tough call)

Repentance is saved by having one of JP's best solos.  Not sure I'd ever listen to again if not for that solo.  Very cool to be able to watch him play it on the "making of" video for SC.  TSF also has one of my favorite JP solos.  Kinda reminds me of the Awake era JP for some reason.  Amazingly crafted.

The Glass Prison  :hefdaddy
The Root Of All Evil  :metal
Repentance :justjen
This Dying Soul  :corn
The Shattered Fortress :hat

I hope for TGP in setlist B on this tour !  :blush

The Glass Prison>>This Dying Soul>The Root of All Evil>>>>The Shattered Fortress>>>>>>>>>>>>Repentance

TGP is definitely my favourite, though I don't love it as much as I used to. TDS and TROAE are not far behind, pretty evenly matched and difficult to separate them. TSF is OK, but not on the same level as the first 3 - will be interesting to hear it live I guess, but it's a big chunk of the set. Reptentance is one of my least favourite DT tracks.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

At the risk of sounding unoriginal... this, really.

I love most of the 12SS, but The Glass Prison so easily. It's my #1 or #2 DT song (depending on my mood  ).

Ranking-
1. TGP
2. TROAE
3. TDS
4. Repentance
5. TSF

I went and randomly copied Tom Bombadil's list so I didn't have to type it out, and it turns out my ranking is identical anyway. :lol Good taste! :tup

Lucidity

#24
1. The Glass Prison
2. Repentance
3. The Shattered Fortress
4. This Dying Soul
5. The Root of All Evil

Basically all the last four are very close and practically interchangeable.

I actually rank them in the order they were released.

Hm. Probably:

1. This Dying Soul
2. Repentance
3. The Glass Prison
4. The Root Of All Evil
5. The Shattered Fortress

TROAE is my favorite - it's a compact rocker and an awesome opener. TGP comes really close, but the riffing gets slightly repetitive towards the end of the instrumental section. Knowing that TSF is in the setlist for the current tour, I've been listening to it recently and it has grown on me, although it still feels a bit like a medley relying too much on reprises from the previous songs. TDS starts out strong, but goes downhill with the Blackened verse, and the unison at the very end is awful. I like the first half of Repentance, but after the solo it gets boring. Did they really need to make it 10½ minutes long?

1. TROAE
2. TGP
3. TSF
4. TDS
5. Repentance

EDIT: Post #8000!

Xersiz

1.The Shattered Fortress

5.The Glass Prison

Yep,not much love for TGP,it's just not anything special after the intro...

BlobVanDam

It's amusing that you'd place TSF first, and say there's nothing special about TGP, considering that a significant chunk of TSF is directly recycled from TGP. :lol

That's how I feel about TSF. :P

The Glass Prison is pretty good, but I'm more into The Root of All Evil's vibe overall. It's less heavy, but has a certain something to it that makes it hit harder than TGP. Repentance is also pretty great, except for the final "aaaaah" section. It was cool up to the recorded vocals and the guitar solo. The Shattered Fortress doesn't do much for me, but I consider This Dying Soul to be the worst in the 12SS.

That is ironic yeah but i think the best parts of TSF is the parts that was not ripped off from TGP,like TDS riff reprise or "I'm Responsible" part
