TDS higher than Home? Yeah. I don't like you anymore. Home might be my no. 1 favourite DT song.  :'(
:)

And that section of Metropolis is real fun. Once you memorize the pattern it just comes naturally. I don't know if it's the actual time signatures, but when I was learning it I based it off the same section in TDoE, which is 5/8, 5/8, 7/8, 5/8, 7/8, 5/8, 5/8, 7/8, which i counted out on the China 2 hits, 2 hits, 3 hits, 2,3,2,2,3. That sounds super confusing but if you learn it it's easy to understand  :lol

The drum pattern of the second verse is amazing
I usually play this song just for that part. It's so energetic and fun to play.
Love hearing other drummers opinions on DT songs :tup

Starting the top half of the list now:

25. Under A Glass Moon (Score)
A lot of people call this a mediocre song. I think it's great. The intro is amazing. I love the bass/drum riff playing behind the keyboard/guitar chords. The chorus is very catchy and the lyrics are very different. I've seen a lot of people call JP's solo in this song his best ever, and while it's probably one of his best overall, it's definitely not my favorite. The reason for choosing the Score edition is that A) I normally just like to listen to live versions anyway because they're usually more energetic, but in this list I'm trying to only include the live versions for more specific reasons, like B) the drumming, and not just at the 11/4 part before the solo. Portnoy took this song and turned the drumming into something so spectacular. One of my all time favorite performances of him. Just the way he accents the riff in the verses and the ungodly 11/4 part and just all of it is so musical and perfect.

24. Behind the Veil
I'm glad they didn't go with the strings to do the intro to this because while I'm sure it would've been great too, what was done instead is incredible. The tone of JP's guitar in this song is phenomenal, especially in the intro. Once he and MM/JMX kick in, that's some metal right there. The riffs in this song are just godly. The chorus is incredible and in the prechorus the first time, Mangini does some really cool accents that you may not even notice if you don't pay attention. The beginning of the instrumental is a great highlight for JR and MM specifically, and the solo kicks all ass. The outro riff is one of the best riffs on the album. Very classic metal reminiscent. Strong groove, heavy, cool keyboard theme, and pounding drums. Really great song.

23. A Change of Seasons
By far the best song on that album. The rest of their songs on there don't even come close.

But seriously. Great song. It's gets way too much praise from some and not enough from others, but overall it belongs somewhere in the 20's imo. The intro acoustic riff is probably my favorite part of the entire song. It's just so catchy and beautiful. Overall, I really love the song, but it's just not a top 10 song for me. Some parts don't sound all that special to me, but all parts are still good. I'd love to see it live, but I think the 4 song SFAM encore is better than just this song. I love the inclusion of the Simpsons theme in The Darkest Winter on the LSFNY version  :lol I do really love the song and it's expertly crafted. Just not their best.

22. Wait For Sleep (LaLP/Studio)
Wonderful, beautiful song. The additions of strings in LaLP is amazing. The piano melody is Moore's best, and the lyrics my favorite of his. I like how in the first verse the melody is in different time signatures and then the second verse is all in 4/4. I wish they'd throw this song into the set somewhere on the AFTR ride tour so there will be an I&W song, and because it's short and beautiful. Lovely song.

21. Caught in a Web
And now for something completely different, this chugging metal masterpiece. DT's first real attempt at a heavy metal song, this song kicks every form of ass there is. The fucking GROOVE of that chugging 7-string guitar is just   :hefdaddy . The lyrics are one of my favorites of all their songs. The chorus is beyond catchy and the keys at that part are incredible. Shit the keys throughout the entire song are incredible. The endless groove of this song is just amazing. The groove after the drum solo into the last verse/chorus is the best part of the song and album. One of their best more-metal songs. The only reason this song isn't 10 places higher is because the keys/guitar unsion riff before the drum solo isn't all that great imo. I like it, but it's just meh to me. The rest of the song is incredible though. It doesn't get enough love around here.

Top 5 songs to play on drums
7. Systematic Chaos
I'm not one of those people who hate this album. I actually really enjoy it. It's got some very fun metal songs, some great softer ones, and some really great instrumentation. Constant Motion is a great single song, and it really fun to play on drums. The guitar/drum solo is fun as hell. ITPOE is a very fun song to play. Pt 1 is definitely more fun than Pt 2, but the whole thing is fun. TDEN is fun every now and then. TMoLS' instrumental section is one of the most fun sections on the album. PoW I don't play, Repentance I don't like, and that leaves Forsaken, which I play from time to time.

1. Constant Motion
2. In The Presence of Enemies
3. The Dark Eternal Night
4. The Ministry of Lost SOuls
5. Forsaken

Crow

By I&W standards UAGM is a bit mediocre but that still makes it pretty damn good.
BTV is a horrible song that I will never like  :lol
Can understand your stance on ACoSs even if I disagree.
WFS is another of those songs I must just not get. *shrugs*
CiaW is fantastic but I wouldn't rate it this highly, can't complain though! It's a wonderful song, then again, every Awake song is so whaddyaknow
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

You've said TEI is one of the better songs on DT12, but still wouldn't make your top 70, and you hate BtV. Why does it say under your avatar "Official DT12 Enthusiast"? :lol

And the only Awake song I don't think is at least very good is Innocence Faded. I love some of the instrumentation in it, but overall it's just ok to me. Still not a bad song though.

son_ov_hades

Behind The Veil is fine song, but shouldn't be in the top 50 imo. All the others are fantastic songs and great choices, though I always think of Wait For Sleep as the intro to Learning To Live and it isn't as strong on its own. This list is starting to get damn good.

Sarcasm, I think it's the worst DT album besides maaaaybe WDADU and that's all on Dominici anyways.

ThatOneGuy2112

Glad to see some love for DT12 :tup BTV is one of my more favorite tracks off of it.

ACOS is far too low and CIAW far too high, but I can sit well with your other picks.

Tom Bombadil

Innocence Faded is awesome..
But I like all your picks other than BTV.

jakepriest

Isn't the Score version of UAGM where Portnoy actually messes up the instrumental part? :neverusethis:
Nevertheless I like the picks except for BTV, which is a pretty mediocre song except for the solo. The Bigger Picture is a much better song from DT12 that deserves top 30.

And where do you hear MP mess up the instrumental part of UAGM on Score, Jake? I've never heard it lol

yeah_93

BTV is a kick-ass song, you made the right choice, it hits all the right notes.

He hits the snare like half a second late once.  :lol I don't know it just really stands out to me everytime I listen to it.

The only thing I've ever noticed is that he fumbles at the end of the 11/4 part but that's about it lol
If you watch the drum cam for Raise the Knife, he messes up at the end of the instrumental and in the studio they fixed it for the audio

jakepriest

I have no intention of watching any Raise the Knife performance anytime soon as I find the song incredibly bad.   :rollin

Laughingplace56

We've arrived at the Top 20. As i've somewhat said before, most of the songs from the 30's up til the top 10 are all very interchangeable. I just love so much of DT's music that a lot of it is top 50 material. But, there are songs that just destroy every other song they've made, and those are in my top 10, which is the most solid part of my list, save a few songs. Anyways...

20. Learning to Live
(Almost) The best song off I&W. I was actually going back and forth with this and my favorite I&W song as to which one is really better, but ultimately I went with the other. I really like the intro and all the way up to the instrumental, but for me it has the same problem BAI has for me. I really like it, but for some reason, I get bored listening to it. But from the instrumental to the end is amazing. Some amazing work from all of them, and what's even more incredible is that it was only their second album. I LOVE how JP incorporated the WFS melody into the outro at the LSFNY show. Great song, just not the best off I&W. That honor goes to

19.Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
Yeah that's about as stereotypical as saying PMU is your favorite from I&W but it's my list so bite me.
This is my favorite song off I&W for a few reasons. For one thing, the song is just awesome. The intro really builds up into when the band comes in spectacularly, the verses are great, the instrumental is phenomenal, and the outro is excellent. The other reason is that this one song spawned my favorite album, so for that it gets placed higher on my list.

18. Strange Deja Vu
Speak of the devil lol. This song coming right out of Overture is awesome. It keeps the energy and momentum of Overture and just builds on it. The album kicks off with such a high and light note. I love it. Portnoy does some really great drumming in this song. Just a lot of cool accents and patterns. The drumming from FII-SDOIT was his finest time. Those 3 albums in that timeframe have some absolutely phenomenal drumming. The rest are all excellent, but those 3 he really shines. This song is really really catchy. It flows beautifully. Great groove throughout the whole song.

17. The Spirit Carries On (SCORE)
I call this song Dream Theater's "Comfortably Numb". The most popular off their concept album, uplifting, guitar solo to kill them all. This song is truly gorgeous. Some give it too much praise and some hate on it too much, but it's seriously a beautiful song. The lyrics are excellent, the work of all 4 musicians is to die for, and the solo is glorious. I picked the Score version because the way they performed it that night showed how truly amazing the song is. The studio version's excellent. LSFNY version is even better. LaLP just lacks energy and feeling. The Score version, however, is the absolute best version of this song. The guitar solo interlude is some of the most beautiful guitar work JP's ever done. The feeling and emotion and energy conveyed at that performance is just incredible. Portnoy does a wonderful job, just like on the rest of that DVD. It's just a wonderful performance of an amazing song. One of DT's all time best live performances, if not the best.

16. In the Name of God
This song actually was actually higher than this up until me writing this list. I was listening to the song that was originally here and realized it deserved to be higher. I told you this list was tentative
This song is excellent. I don't think it's as good as some people proclaim it to be, but it's definitely excellent. Th main riff is really slammin. The chorus is used a little too much but it's still good. The verses are very good and the instrumentation throughout is all great. The real shining moment of this song is the instrumental through the end. The unsion is probably the highlight of the album for me. But not for the actual unison part. It isn't talked about enough on here, but the bassline and drum groove that plays through the entire unsion and solo section is fucking PERFECT. Especially behind the unison and Jordan's solo. Absolutely gorgeous and groovin and just UGH. Then the main riff with the pinched harmonic is just  :metal one of the heaviest parts of the album. Then the outro is just gorgeous. One of their best outros ever. If the first half of the song, while great, was as good as the rest, this would be a top 10 song. But every song in my top 20 is top 10 material imo.

Top 5 songs to play on drums
6. Awake
I always thought I played this album a lot more than I do, but when I wrote out the list of albums that are the most fun, I realized it wasn't as high as I thought. It's still fun as hell though. CIAW is all the album needed to be this high. That song is just so ridiculously fun. 6:00 is my second favorite because the drumming is just really fun. The Mirror/Lie are 3&4. 2 very heavy, very fun songs. Scarred is my 5th favorite. The intro and outro are wicked fun to play, and the rest isn't half bad either.

1. Caught in a Web
2. 6:00
3. The Mirror
4. Lie
5. Scarred

Metropolis also too low but still   :hefdaddy
Strange Deja Vu  :tup
The Spirit Carries On  :hefdaddy
In The Name Of God  :censored

Seriously four of my absolute favorite songs...and one of the worst, most boring, overlong, and tedious songs Dream Theater ever wrote. The Spirit Carries On Scenes From New York version for me blows every other recording, even the studio one, out of the water. Score is great and Luna Park is very good too, but the gospel choir and Theresa Thomason and Petrucci's incredible emotional solo. Fuck that version brings me to tears.

jakepriest

LTL is okay.
Metropolis is okay.
Strange Deja Vu too high.
TSCO WAY too high.
ITNOG way too low.

Crow

LTL I still find overrated but certainly not unworthy of a top 20 slot. Metropolis is not overrated and totally deserves to be here or higher  :lol
SDVu I just never found all the great for whatever reason. I'll enjoy it while I'm listening to. TSCO is basically where I had it so not a single complain from me, it is much like Comfortably Numb except that Comfortably Numb is a bit overrated if you ask me  ;D
And ITNOG is a pretty swell song that I'll never complain about seeing this high either, I think I had it about the same place as well  :lol
An update I can't really complain too much about though, eagerly awaiting the last 15.

I love the LSFNY version. It's my second favorite for the reasons you stated. But the Score version, to me, is the most emotional and energetic version of the song. You can really feel it come to life on that album and I think it's absolutely wonderful.

son_ov_hades

Oh absolutely, the Score version is totally great too. Its like choosing between two almost perfect recordings.

Laughingplace56

The Top 15 begins.

Some of these next 5 songs were in my top 10 at one point in making this list. Actually, only one of them wasn't.  :lol Dream Theater just has so many incredible compositions that it's hard to rank some songs lower than they could be if DT didn't have so many great songs. There's like 20 songs that could've made my top 50 on top of the 50 that are already on here. But, after careful consideration and double guessing myself 100 times, I'll write the last 5 songs that lead up to the elusive top 10.

15. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Score)
The big epic. I really don't understand the people who won't consider this one whole composition, or that each section doesn't flow into the next smoothly. The whole thing works as one giant epic beautifully. I chose the score version because I love the orchestra only version of the overture and because the song, just like all songs on that DVD, just comes alive in that performance and it's truly a great rendition of the song. I'm going to write about each section of the song, and I'll write them in the order of how i'd rank them on their own:

Part IV: The Test That Stumped Them All
This is a really fun song. The intro is killer. It's the only heavy part of the epic I think and it's a great stand alone metal song. The lyrics are great, the instrumentation throughout is wonderful, and the song is just awesome.

Part II: About to Crash
I didn't realize how much I loved this section until recently. It has a great vibe to it and opens up the epic after the Overture beautifully. I love some of the vocal melodies throughout the song. The piano work throughout is excellent and the rest of the instruments do great to keep an uplifting, light feeling throughout the song.

Part VI: Solitary Shell
This was at one point my favorite part of the epic, but i've gotten sort of tired of it. It's still a wonderful piece. The acoustic guitar and synth intro is glorious and the instrumentation throughout is some of the best in the epic. There's a bit of a pop element to it that makes it, especially the chorus, very catchy.

Part I: Overture
I don't see how anyone doesn't like this overture, or how they think it's disjointed. It's a beautiful piece of music. It fits the themes of the rest of the parts excellently throughout, the orchestra parts with the synth theme is gorgeous, and the whole piece flows beautifully. It reminds me of a piece of score music that you'd hear in a Disney movie or in one of their shows in one of their theme parks. The orchestra only Score version, at least.

Part V: Goodnight Kiss
The softest part of the epic. It's a nice breath of fresh air after TTTSTA. The main theme of the song is gorgeous. The absolute shining moment of the piece and of the whole epic is JP's guitar solo. It is absolutely incredible. And I don't know if anyone's noticed, but the ending part of it appears at the ending part of his solo in The Bigger Picture. At least it sounds incredibly similar.

Part VII: About to Crash (Reprise)
A reprise of a superior of piece. This is a heavier version of AtC, i think, and it does great of reprising the themes of the first version of this piece. I like how they took the same concept of AtC and put the lyrics from the other person's perspective. Very cool.

Part VIII: Losing Time/Grand Finale
I only really listen to this song in conjunction with AtC Reprise. It's not bad, just not strong on it's own. It wraps up the epic nicely, but it could've been a stronger finish.

Part III: War Inside My Head
This part is just eh to me. It's straightforward and can be boring. I only listen to it in conjunction with either AtC and TTTSTA, or just TTTSTA.

14. Space Dye Vest
Let the butthurt begin.

I love this song. It's beautiful, simple, haunting, amazing. The piano melodies throughout the entire song are incredible and the guitar adds such an amazing atmosphere to it, as do the sound effects. Jame's soft, haunting vocals fit the song perfectly, and while I don't really understand all of the lyrics, some of them are just excellent. "Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding, pool in the shape of a heart". The ending live, where James sings the vocals an octave higher, is perfect in this song. I really think it adds so much to the song. It makes it even more powerful. This is my favorite song on Awake. Haters gon hate, but this song is just simply beautiful.

13. Overture 1928
This song gets the mood, tone, and themes of the album down as perfectly as humanly possible throughout different sections of an amazing opener, and all in just a little over 3 minutes. This is my favorite overture. It captures the entire essence of the album in 3 minutes. The guitar solo from Finally Free. Themes from Metropolis Pt 1 and the rest of the album. Some of TDoE is thrown in there. This song wraps everything from this magnificent masterpiece of an album into one incredible opening track and there was literally no other way they could've opened this better in conjunction with Regression, which I personally love.

All that being said, it's not my favorite instrumental. That belongs to the mother of all instrumentals:

12. The Dance of Eternity
I originally had this song in the 20s. But while looking over my list and thinking about each song, I realized that if I were to describe Dream Theater to someone who's never heard of them before, I'd describe them as a progressive metal band that takes the elements of both progressive rock and heavy metal and blend together into a technical and musical genre of awesomeness. There is not a single song in their catalog that showcases the entire essence of this band better than TDoE. My #1 defines DT in a different light, but this song IS Dream Theater. It's technical as all holy hell. It's heavy. It's musically proficient. It may have 103 time signatures, but some parts are really fucking catchy. It shows off exactly what these musicians can really do, and boy do they show off. It's a FUN, technical, ridiculous instrumental and is without a doubt 100% Dream Theater.

11. The Great Debate
I've seen this song get some unwarranted hate, but this song is just magnificent. The topic and lyrics alone are superb. I think this one of Jordan and MP's best performances. The keys keep the essence and mood of this song going throughout and the running arpeggios in the beginning and in the "harvesting existence" part  are just awesome. The drumming in this song is perfect. MP did such a wonderful job on this song. It shows off how technical and incredible he can play. The intro/outro and the "harvesting existence" parts are some of his finest work ever. Just incredibly musical, interesting, and different. The entire song is incredibly catchy. There's passages and parts that just make me smile whenever I listen to them. The ending solos can be a bit tedious sometimes and that's why this song's not rated higher than 11.

Top 5 songs to play on drums
5. Train of Thought
DT's balls to the wall album is, surprise surprise, FUN to play. This was the first album I knew how to play every song off of because in addition to being fun and energetic, it's pretty simple for DT standards. Honor Thy Father has such a relentless groove and heaviness to the main riff, and the "dont cross the crooked step part" is just  :metal. This Dying Soul builds off TGP and has some really heavy parts...and the first verse. The ending unsion though is amazing to play. In the Name of God is third just for the instrumental section. The bass and drum groove is fucking godly. As I Am is a very straightforward song but a very fun one. The prechorus and chorus are my favorite parts to play. That leaves Vacant, Endless Sacrifice and Stream of Consciousness. Vacant's obviously out, so that leaves the others. SoC, to my surprise, is beginning to grow on me again. I'm starting to really get into it again, but the middle part before the main riff comes back in is still boring. ES in the beginning all the way to the drum fill after the solos is boring, but then after that it's a powerhouse of awesome. So, since both are half boring and half great, I have them tied for 5th.
1. Honor Thy Father
2. This Dying Soul
3. In the Name of God
4. As I Am
5. Stream of Consciousness/Endless Sacrifice

Make your predictions of what songs are in the top 10

jakepriest

About to Crash (Reprise) + Losing Time are the only good parts of the entire song. Overture and About to Crash are okay but I really dislike the middle part from WIMH → Solitary Shell.

I like seeing The Great Debate so high. It's an awesome song.

Also if I had to rank ToT (my favourite album) songs in order how fun they are to play on drums:
1. Honor Thy Father  :metal
2. In The Name of God  :hefdaddy
3. Endless Sacrifice
4. As I Am
5. Stream of Consciousness
6. This Dying Soul (that's more because I'm not a big fan of the song, the drums are pretty in parts but I just don't enjoy the song)

Crow

I'm really done even commenting on 6DOIT  :lol
SDV is great but not my favorite song on awake at all, still can't complain about it being here.
The two SFAM instrumentals are both good without being extraordinary for me, around the middle of the pack as far as DT songs go, and I only ever generally listen to them in the context of the album. If I were to say one song of "This is Dream Theater" then it would totally be Metropolis or Take The Time though. Maybe The Glass Prison too. Hell, I don't think I could really do it in one song after all  :lol
And MP is AMAZING in TGD's intro which is part of why it's my favorite section of the song. It's a song that definitely needed to be trimmed down though, if it was a ~10 minute song it'd probably be top 20 for me.
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

son_ov_hades

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence is fucking phenomenal and should be higher, though I can't complain too much. The only thing I disagree with you about is War Inside My Head, which is awesome and so full of anger and hate. It works so well within the whole composition and on its own in live releases.

Space Dye Vest is totally beautiful and I agree with everything you said about it. Except it isn't my favorite song From Awake, close though.

Overture 1928 is my favorite overture as well, it sets the stage for the whole album so perfectly.

Absolutely! I couldn't have said it better myself. The Dance Of Eternity is my favorite instrumental ever, by anyone.

The Great Debate is pretty good, but my least favorite from that album and wouldn't make my top 50. I really, really hate the samples. I mean I'm a political nerd but hearing the words "gallup poll" in a Dream Theater song is ridiculous and I don't know who thought that was a good idea.

My guesses for top 10:
Octavarium
In The Presence Of The Enemies
Illumination Theory
Endless Sacrifice
The Count Of Tuscany
The Glass Prison
Surrounded
Finally Free
Bridges In The Sky
Lie

Won't comment on whether or not you're right on the others because I don't want to give it away, but I've already said my favorites on I&W and Awake on this list, so Lie and Surrounded are already out. I actually just said SDV was my favorite on Awake and you commented on it  :lol

Love both songs, and they're top 50 material, but there's just other songs that beat them out. The drum solo into the guitar solo in Live is just epic though.

I actually really love ATC Reprise. That section from 2:24 to 3:00 is probably one of my favorite sections from the song Six Degrees, it's so goddamn emotional and awe-inducing.

I agree, the entire epic actually flows together fascinatingly well. Even the more jarring and seemingly abrupt transitions are great, since they increase the sense of drama you get while listening. I'll never understand how anyone can say it's a disjointed mess.

Space Dye Vest is great and certainly a work of beauty, though far from my favorite Awake track.

Overture 1928 is magnificent. Isn't it weird how such a short song by DT standards contains some of JP's best solos? :lol

I wouldn't have TGD that high. It's a great song, but probably my least favorite song off of SDOIT.

My guesses for top 10:
Octavarium
In The Presence Of The Enemies
Illumination Theory
Endless Sacrifice
The Count Of Tuscany
The Glass Prison
Surrounded
Finally Free
Bridges In The Sky
Lie

Won't comment on whether or not you're right on the others because I don't want to give it away, but I've already said my favorites on I&W and Awake on this list, so Lie and Surrounded are already out. I actually just said SDV was my favorite on Awake and you commented on it  :lol

Reading comprehension maybe isn't my strong suite.  :lol

SDV, Overture1928, and TGD are great. TDOE is great from a drumming standpoint cause it's fun as hell, but as a song I think it's pretty weak. And my dislike of SDOIT is well documented.

HTF, ITNOG, and As I Am are my favorites to drum to on Train of Though. I honestly get pretty bored with This Dying Soul after the beginning.

Top 10 guesses:
The Glass Prison
Octavarium
Blind Faith
The Count of Tuscany
The Bigger Picture
5 others

TBP is #38 on my list lol. But as i said before, won't comment on the others because they haven't appeared if they will at all.

And TDoE works because it's exactly what it sets out to be. A chasm of chaos, technicality, and musicality. I think it works.

Trying to do a top 10 thing here and you completely ignored Surrounded from the sound of things  :lol
Metropolis is your #1 I&W song and PMU is your lowest but Surrounded isn't mentioned in-between which is throwing me for a loop so if you have it in your top 10 I'm declaring that cheating  :P
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead
