 thread
I dunno - think about it. Would there be such a reaction if it was " Who could hypothetically replace John Myung ? "

Obviously nobody would suggest that Myung cannot play - just hypothetically - who could fill those shoes ?

Thread = " Who else could sound cool singing for DT ? "

People's reactions = " Labrie sucks - who should replace him ASAP ? "

Thank you for this,

Barney from Napalm Death...makes JMX smile for three hours!  :rollin

Sick and tired of this discussion......

Fucking Impossible............Labrie is irreplaceable and Dream Theater would loose their identity.

Myles Kennedy ?

:tup

He's a very soulful singer, but definitely has the pipes to do it

This.

Also, why are people getting upset? No one wants Labrie replaced. He will never get replaced. No one can replace him.  It's just fun to imagine.

I don't think they would lose their identity... I mean, When Dream and Day Unite sounds like Dream Theater without Labrie.

Perpetual Change

Nicky Spanjaards is obviously the perfect choice.

Too bad he seems to have retired from singing.

haceeb

There's no alternative to James Labrie, he's identity of Dream Theater so there's no point in discussing it

emtee

The same thing has been said of many vocalists, including Steve Perry, Ozzy, David Lee Roth...and so on. Vocalists that
supposedly were irreplaceable. Well guess what...

Nobody wants it to happen but the future is 100% unpredictable. If for any reason JLB had to leave, it's fun to consider options.
That's all this thread is about.

:lol

This thread title could be a little misleading. It kinda gives the impression that James is no longer in DT.

Okay,when did this happen?

I once had a dream where I heard Daniel Gildenlow singing Leaning To Live. It was amazing.

My #1 choice alive or dead would be Freddie Mercury.

Not a bad idea at all..

Disagree. I find MK to be whiny and annoying. Not a fit for DT at all.

Damien Wilson
Please no. Damien is OK but I've never understood all the praise for his vocals. He's my least favorite vocalist from Threshold. Now if we were talking about Glynn Morgan, that'd be a different story.

ahhhhhh - another fan of Psychedelicatessen.   :tup   My fave of theirs - small club.

FTR I can't imagine anyone replacing JLB - I love R. Allen but he just wouldn't fit IMO............unless of course he makes them an offer they can't refuse

His name is Davide James!

Wow, this guys upper range has a lot of the same tone / timbre as LaBrie. And, he even sings the words wrong! Perfect choice!  ;) ;) ;)

Bridges in the sky is very impressive! check it out!

He would be the perfect JLB replacement because he sounds just like him, for better or for worse.

In the event James ever left, I'd like DT to find a singer who stands on his own, not just a Labrie-clone.

Matt Smith from Theocracy.  I think he could definitely do justice to the DT songs, and he's not well known enough to draw the label of "DT and the guy from _______".  This is a crappy recording that  doesn't sound anywhere near as good as their studio stuff, but it shows that he can hit the high notes live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tMnZnSRvUk

And there's always Geoff Tate.  He may be looking for a band. ;)

Tis BOOLsheet

I would go with a totally different tone....one that is more diverse and less like it belongs to a narrow genre or particular era. A guy like Roy Khan would be fantastic.

bl5150

For me the question is do you want a clean break from the old material like a Hagar/Roth situation where the old material is pretty much forgotten?   I think they could do some great stuff with Khan, Allen etc.... but I don't think those guys could do the old material justice.

So it'd be a real balancing act in terms of not being a clone but being able to nail the old stuff.

I have no desire to see anyone replace JLB but in a hypothetical I think you'd need someone close-ish in tone and range.

Kotowboy

Realistically - if anyone else left the band now - they'd be done I think.

Daso

First off, a lot of people are getting the thread wrong. It's a hypothetical scenario, it's not a "Replace James LaBrie with another singer right now" sort of thread (although the title makes it look like that  :lol). The point is just to think who would you like to see in DT in case - God forbid - James left the band.

I can't really think of someone at the moment. Most of the other singers I like just have a whole different feel and texture to their voice and I'm not able to picture any of them in Dream Theater. It's not just a matter of hitting the right notes, but of feeling like the singer actually fits the music. Perhaps I'm too used to JLB's voice in DT songs, which is only natural after 11 albums and over 20 years in the band, but I just can't. It's similar to when DragonForce's (sorry if anyone hates the band in here) singer left: I couldn't imagine anyone replacing him. They got a much better (in my opinion) singer, and his voice is way different from the former singer's, but he actually fits the music just right.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I wouldn't say Marc is "way different" from ZP. I can tell them apart (I also prefer Marc), but they've got a similar tone and style.
