Not their best instrumental (some of the noodling is forgettable, IMO) but I give it a "yay"
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
Quote from: TAC on July 10, 2024, 08:26:41 AMPOW is awesome! :P

KevShmev

Yes.  It's not one of their best instrumentals - it's difficult to top Erotomania or Hell's Kitchen - but it's still a fun song, and a helluva song to drive to. :metal

Jaq

Yes. It's not Erotomania or Dance of Eternity, but it's pretty good. Doesn't overstay its welcome, a great driving riff propels, just enough wankery to be impressive without overdoing it. I like it.

bosk1

I like The Enigma Machine.

Perpetual Change

It's their best instrumental since "Stream of Consciousness".

Personally I thought it was their best instrumental since False Awakening Suite.

I may have a different version of FII because in mine Labrie actually sings in that song :neverusethis:

Yeah, meant Hell's Kitchen actually.

All of this
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Kotowboy

It doesn't have anything as good as that Egyptian sounding riff in Stream Of Consciousness but it's a fun song.

Perpetual Change

Erotomania
Hell's Kitchen
The Dance of Eternity
Eve
Stream of Consciousness
Ytsejam
Enigma Machine
False Awakening Suite
Raw Dog

I think you pretty much nailed it.

I like all their instrumentals. My order would be:

Hell's Kitchen
The Dance of Eternity
Erotomania
Eve
Stream of Consciousness
Ytsejam
Enigma Machine
False Awakening Suite
Raw Dog

Ultimetalhead

It's great, but one of the lesser instrumentals for sure. I will say that Jordan's solo is one of the highlights of the album though.

JayOctavarium

there is no "meh" option. I don't dislike it... and it is slowing growing on me... but I don't love it yet

Perpetual Change

I also don't dislike it, though it's a less instrumental for me. However, unlike False Awakening suite, I do think it belongs on the album, where I think FAS would have probably better been left off as something just for live shows.

wolven74

Its definitely a grower. The first time I heard it I was a little....not disappointed, but weirded out. I guess my hope was for something more along the lines of Erotomania or Overture 1928. That's not to say I didn't like the song, but it was something totally different and it took some few listens to get into it. Now, I'd say it's right up there with Overture 1928 and Erotomania as one of their best instrumentals.

BlobVanDam

I'm going to say it - EM isn't even the best instrumental on the album, FAS beats it. FAS is actually awesome, and from the first moment I heard that, it got me super pumped for the rest of the album. EM was a letdown by comparison.

rumborak

I'm actually with you on that one. I enjoy FAS more than EM.

ThatOneGuy2112

Enigma Machine is a great instrumental. Not in the league of their best, but it's just really fun to listen to and it was a great addition to DT12.

Bargey

It reminds me of the Inspector Gadget theme. So NO, I most certainly DO NOT like it.

I'd consider that a reason TO like it! :lol I like the Fatal Tragedy Inspector Gadget riff too (which is what the band called it on the Metropolis 200 commentary).

I like it, but I think it's a great disappointment and an overall average or below average song.

I don't like neither  :P

Mosh

I like it. It's fun to play, has a neat riff. Kind of disappointing given the hype around it but I suppose that's not really the band's fault.

As for rankings..

Stream of Consciousness
The Dance of Eternity
Hell's Kitchen
Erotomania
Eve
Enigma Machine
Ytsejam
Raw Dog

Decided not to include any of the Overture/Intro type pieces.

LTE3

Looks like we are a loud minority so far,  as my parents always said "hate is a strong word" I don't hate the song but as far as DT instrumentals I like all others much more.

The Stray Seed

Il like the song! It's technical but catchy and fun to listen to (something that just DT can do IMO).

Here are my rankings:

Hell's Kitchen
Erotomania
The Dance of Eternity
Eve
Enigma Machine
Ytsejam
Stream of Consciousness
Raw Dog

Their are 3 songs I don't care much for on this album; Enigma Machine is one of them, the other 2 are the False Awakening suite and Illumination Theory.

kirksnosehair

I enjoy the song quite a bit.  There are some really fun and twisted riffs in there.

Love the atonal slant to it.  :hat

People keep saying this and I still don't hear it. Maybe it's a good thing, otherwise I may dislike it more than I already do...

I think Enigma Machine is pretty unremarkable, but I really do love FAS.

The other way round for me. Although FAS is a nice way to open the album.
