All in all this might be the best update of the list thus far.
Now that's a surprise.

Exactly.

22- Under a Glass Moon (Score)
The last song added to this list (by now). This was a good song, but the Score performance is just brilliant: James nails it completely, JP does his epic solo and they all make a fun fill. The only thing that bothers me is that instrumental section at the beginning but the rest is almost perfect.

21- Hollow Years (Live at Budokan)
How to turn a normal ballan into an epic song. I'm not a fan of live versions (there are just a few on this list) but HY in LAB is freaking awesome. It starts with an impsovised solo (meh) it continues till the chorus (good). Everything goes fine until Petrucci enters into world Domination Mode and makes a freaking awesome solo (One of his best ever) that gets the audience pregnant blows everybody's mind. A guide of how to make emotional and technical solos. Jordan is ver inspired too.
The only bad thing about this live version is James' voice, but I can forget about that.

20- Learning to Live
A song that took SO MUCH time to grow on me. Seriously, when I first became a DT fan, I couldn't stand this tune. Just some months ago I realised about it's epicness.
It starts well but it gets way better to the end. It has an unusual structure: the first chorus is reapeated near the end of the song only one time after a long instrumental section. The main instrumental part is ok, calm and sweet. The best and most epic part is, obviously, James with that impossible and amazing F#5 and Godtrucci makeing an epic solo. From there the song till is just good.

19- Through Her Eyes
After all the amazing wankery on the first half of SFAM, Through Her Eyes appears to help us take a breath before Home starts. This my fav ballad ♥. It has all that ballad needs to have: piano, acoustic guitars, calm drums and passion, feelings and more passion. The way James sings it really makes me feel like he was Nicholas crying for Victoria's murder. Theresa Thomason + Petrucci at the beginning is amazing and James' "crying" at the end is just so... beautiful.

Hollow Years and Thru Her Eyes are a bit high, even though HY is the LAB version.  I won't comment on the others since my list is still going on.   ;D

jakepriest

Hollow Years is way too high. The solo doesn't save the boring song one bit.

Learning to Live is great and I understand why some people don't rate it in their top 10, so I'll give you a pass on that. :neverusethis:

Through Her Eyes is  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy Never understood all the hate for it. James sings with a lot of emotion and it really shows.

Crow

Hollow Years is just alright, don't care about live versions. LTL is too high and Through Her Eyes is one of the worst DT songs so it's way way high UAGM is too high too.

All great picks. LTL should probably be a tad higher, but no complaints here. Also this:

Top 5 songs that could/should be on this list

4- Breaking All Illusions
Although I think is an amazing track musically, there's something on it that makes feel... bored. It could be the awful mix, the fact that it sounds like a LTL copy or maybe Jordan's sounds. Perhaps if I get the HDTracks version I could apreciate it a bit more.

While the song is on my top 50, i agree with this. It's a little overrated IMO and while i love it, i feel bored listening to it. It's very similar to LTL in the way LNF is similar to UAGM, OtBoA is similar to PMU etc.

Wonderful song that should definitely be in the top 20 or so imo. I think the mix is fine but I've never heard the CD version, sounds great on vinyl. I've never understood why people think that mixes/production can deter from the quality of a song. A great composition performed very well is a great song regardless of what is done to it in the studio.

Bored

??? ???
What I mean by that is the instrumentation of the song has some great parts, but overall it drags in some parts for me.  I like most of the musicianship, but I just feel bored listening to it. It's like SoC. Great riff, some great solos, but i feel bored listening to it.

Top 5 worst DT songs ever

3- Lost Not Forgotten

ADTOE is a weak album. OTBoA is ok, BMU, BMD is meh, but LNF is just boooooring. The only good thing is the piano intro. The chorus is quite forgettable and the instrumental sections are dull. Also, it sounds like a bad copy of UAGM.

While I agree that LNF is awful, ADToE is by no means a weak album. All the songs except for OTBOA and LNF are amazing.

I also don't like Lost Not Forgotten. I really want to like it, but I just can't get into the song. It doesn't inspire anything in me in any way.

BEST UPDATE
This list is finally something where Parama and I can agree on something
That's a... dramatic turn of events, I guess.

Be ready (?) for today's update:

18- In the Presence of Enemies
The epic song about the Dark Master. The band made a wise choise to split it up into two tracks because the second part has some musical reprises of the songs in the album.
The instrumental intro is awesome, it has some of Petrucci's most creative moments. Sadly, the instrumental section on the second part has some really weird fillings. The reprise of the first riff is brilliant.

17- Home
I fucking love the intro and the oriental feeling and how James enters in an unusual way with "SHIIIIIIIIIIINE, lake of fire...". Almost everything on this song is perfect, but the best thing is the reprise of Metropolis in the chorus. Oh, and the orgams sounds are akward I don't rank it higher because I can't put this song over the next ones, they are so amazing.

16- Finally Free (with Overture 2000)
An epic way to close an epic album. SFAM is my second fav album but I think it's an example of musical perfection. Seriously, it has everything I love: lots of feelings, heavy tunes, emotional (and not cheesy) ballads, epic song-writing, etc. My fav album is also a symbol of musical perfection, only that I like it a bit more than SFAM.
Finally Free is awesome, I can't think of a better way to close the album. The passion James puts on every vocal line is just amazing. I don't like his singing on LSFNY but Overture 2000 is an incredible way to solve that endless ending on the original song. So let's imagine I cut Overture 2k and pasted onto the normal track and there you have this awesome ending.

15- To Live Forever
Seriously, I don't know what David Prater had on his head to not include this song on I&W: It's fucking awesome. James' performance is great, and the rst of the band is perfect. The only bad thing about this track is that is too short! But making it longer just for the sake of it, no please. I think it's a perfect as it.

What is Overture 2000?

It's the musical extension at the end of Finally Free that the band played during the tour for SFAM.
