Snob, thank you for recapping picks 50-11.

Nothing wrong with TDOE that high. Like you said:

To me, this is the instrumental of all instrumentals.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

No you don't.  Just be more obscure with any fanboyism for a song.  Such as:

That Dance of Eternity bit is hella coolz.

It's not actually a big huge deal is it?  :lol
Anyways, TDoE is not one of my favorites. Half of it's cool, the second half loses me though, too self-indulgent and... boring. Can't understand it being this high but whatever  :tup
turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

I would say the same thing about Eve in a lot of people's top 20s. :neverusethis:

?

I used to think TDOE was really cool, but the "omg so many time sig changes" novelty wore off pretty quickly. I bet it'll be interesting to hear it live, though! I'm also not a fan of Octavarium, so we'll see how much your top 10 has in common with mine :D

I wouldn't have it quite this high, but TDOE is a great instrumental.

Evermind

TDOE is alright, but I like SoC and Overture 1928 more.

This is a good list. Sad to see Space Dye Vest so low, but to each his own. Waiting for the rest!

8. Scarred

I feel like you either love this song or hate it. I didn't get it at first, which was back in 1994.  However it has slowly grown on me over the years and become one of my favorite songs. JP's beautiful intro solo bleeds with a brazen simplicity yet stunningly effective.  I haven't been able to figure out what the song is about. I get a religious overtone and wonder if the song is about a person looking to God for all of the answers to the problems in his life.  The narrator seems to be dealing with disease at one point in the song and then at another point he seems to have relationship issues. What is everyone else's  take on this?

Musically speaking the song is brilliant and James' voice soars through each verse and chorus with unmatched power and emotion.  The instrumental section starting at 7 minutes ranks as one of my favorite moments. KM and JP both get a chance to display their uneding creativity.  The first time I heard the sweeps at the end of JP's solo I think my speakers broke.  His execution with sweeps still floors me till this day.

Evermind

I had it lower, but Scarred is amazing. Thrilled to see it live.

I actually think the instrumental part of Scarred is the worst part, but it's still awesome.

Crow

too low boo  :tdwn

but no seriously glad to see it in a top 10 at all  :lol

Scarred bored me when I first heard it. Yeah. I was an idiot. :lol

Its atmosphere is terrific. Jame's delivery and vocal melodies all throughout are probably some of my favorite things about the song. Excellent choice. :tup

Scarred is great, but the chorus is so dull and kills the momentum of the song, although it has some really epic moments.

Thanks for all the love for Scarred!!

7. The Count of Tuscany

What started out as a nightmare for John Petrucci turned into one of Dream Theater's greatest songs. I know a lot of people find the lyrics cheesy and boring, but I think JP does a great job of using creative non-fiction to tell his story.  From beginning to end my ears are focused on the lyrics as Mr. Petrucci guides us through his tale of an encounter with an eccentric Count.  The last verse of the song before the solo is pure brilliance and JLB phrases everything to perfection.

As with any Dream Theater song, one listen is never enough.  Not just because their songs are so great but because to listen to both the lyrics and music at once is obviously impossible.  After a couple of listens to the lyrics, I go back again to pay more attention to the music.  There are very very few songs by Dream Theater that come close to perfection and this song almost hits it.  9.9 out of 10 for me.

Evermind

Great song too, love all the parts and the lyrics. That's how you insert a calm section into the epic.

The Count Of Tuscany is incredible. It has fought like hell to crack my Top 10. This song takes you on a journey. The beginning reminds me of red barchetta a little bit in the mood. I think the swell section is...swell. ;D

And the ending is goosebumps inducing. James nails it.

The Count of Tuscany is an amazing song. It was one of the first DT songs I instantly liked. Glad to see it's in the top 10.

The Count of Tuscany is fantastic. The intro and outro definitely being some of the greatest music DT has ever composed.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I'm not going to check right now, but I think this is very close to where I placed the song on my list.
