Has DT (the band or members while in the band) Ever Feuded with Another Band

I was just thinking about how you will read about feuds existing between bands/individual musicians, and curious if DT or it's members have ever found itself in a feud with another band/individual musician?

They all seem like such nice guys, and was just curious.

emtee

Well DT (especially MP) and Geoff Tate did not get along well for awhile but I don't know of any others.

Perpetual Change

Queenrsyche is really the closest thing, and they didn't really feud as much as they didn't enjoy each other's company on tour, and certain members wound up being very vocal about it afterwards.

Not a band, but they've had lots of problems with David Prater, the guy who produced I&W and ACOS. The conflict which unfolded between them constitutes by far the most interesting and entertaining chapters of Lifting Shadows. Prater once showed up on DTF to defend himself while pretending to be a third party and he trash-talks DT in YouTube comments to this day. :lol

I was thinking of them and the dope from Children of Bodom.
Dave Mustaine said he left Bodom out of the Gigantour 2005 bill to avoid conflicts between the two bands and Alexi Laiho has later apologized for his comment on DT and JP's playing, but I don't remember the DT guys ever acknowledging COB.

MP once responded to Mastodon members' remarks on DT: https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/dream-theater-drummer-responds-to-mastodon-s-stupid-remarks/ Another good reason for me not to care about Mastodon :lol

EDIT: Looks like MP did mention Children of Bodom after all

Dave_Manchester

^^ Where did he mention Children of Bodom?

EDIT: never mind, I guess you meant in the article linked above yours.

Yeah I read an online chat thing where Alex blamed it on himself being young and arrogant.  Mike makes an excellent point though at the end of that article you linked to.  For every band that disses them, they get accolades from bands like Yes, Rush, etc.

TheAtliator

Styx and Dream Theater being my two favorite bands, I always look out for if one EVER mentions the other. So far, I've found literally no more than 3 connections, this being one of them- https://youtu.be/ehxJ1vg7jJs?t=40s . Apparently DT's road crew wasn't so nice to JY?  :( I can still hope they write an album and tour together some day right??  :P  :lol

Regarding the Mastodon thing, I don't know anything about the situation personally, but based on the quote from Brent, it seems pretty clear he was joking around.

I know that they had a brief feud with Saigon Kick when they were both touring in 1992. Somehow they both got booked to co-headline a show in San Francisco together. Arguments had ensued as to who would play first. DT ended up playing first since Saigon Kick had a hit at the time. Ironically, after DT finished their set, the whole audience left (except roughly 20 people) so SK never bothered playing.

I know Chris McLernon (bassist) commented on this later - verifying the above facts and essentially said it was a stupid argument or something to that effect.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

What did Alexi say about JP's playing?

Dave_Manchester

^^ He didn't focus on JP specifically, but said DT's music in general was "lame" and "sport, not music".

Daso

Any links to wherever he said that? I see (as you people say) he apologized, but it would be an interesting read.

TheGreatPretender

I remember in 2010, when Dragonforce was looking for a new vocalist, in an interview, one of them said something like, "For our band, a vocalist couldn't be less important if his name was James LaBrie." I don't think anyone in DT has ever given them the time of day by responding to this comment, but it is quite the bullshit of a comment, and if it made it on DT's radar, I can't imagine they think very highly of Dragonfarce.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I find that hard to believe. If I remember correctly, Herman Li at least is a big fan of Petrucci, and cites him as one of his main inspirations.

i don't find it TOO offensive. Of course it's an exaggeration, but JLB does hang out in that tent behind petrucci's amps for a chunk of the show

Well, it was a shot at JLB, not Petrucci or DT in general.

Yeah, but that's like saying that JLB's vocals are unimportant to Dream Theater. It has nothing to do with JLB remedying his voice behind the scenes (as opposed to doing a little dance or spin-prancing across the stage like ue used to do). It just seems insulting because he's basically saying that while DT's music is awesome, their vocalist is expendable.

I don't remember that, and I'm a huge fan of DragonForce. At that point they didn't even gave VERY few interviews, it was kind of a silent period of the band, and all the members are huge Dream Theater fans. Hell, come on https://instagram.com/p/M83BO3m60n/# If any of them had actually said that, I'm above sure I would remember.

TheGreatPretender

Wow. Okay, I guess I must have severely misread the article... Turns out it wasn't someone in Dragonforce who said that, but the writer of the actual article.

https://www.metalsucks.net/2010/03/09/dragonforce-lose-singer-everyone-else-goes-about-their-business/

So yeah, my mistake. Also, fuck this Axl Rosenberg. Wasn't there a discussion on this board about how he talks a lot of shit and doesn't know what he's talking about? Or was that a different self-important, over-opinionated 'journalist'?

By the way, reading that Blabbermouth interview about DT and Mastodon, MP said that the question in the interview was provoking an insulting response toward DT. Does anyone know what that question was?

If I remember correctly, Brent, from Mastodon, was asked what he thought of Dream Theater. His response was something along the lines of "At least we don't have a Chinese girl playing bass."

This is where JP got the inspiration for  "As I Am".

Didn't JP have to teach him his own guitar parts when DT toured with Queensryche?

I'm sure I heard that somewhere
