Dream Theater's greatest song:

Number 1: Home (Scenes From a Memory, 1999)

Regardless of whether the opening of this song is, let's say 'derived' from a Tool song (and it clearly does have strong echoes of it), they've still taken relative lead and turned it into 24-carat gold. This is one of the most brilliant beginnings to any song. Portnoy's eerie trills are a great detail.

And from then, it sustains a consistently perfect standard. Every note and riff Petrucci plays throughout the entire track is wonderful. The riff beneath the "Living this charade is getting me nowhere," and the next one under "Home - it's what I long for" are superb. The solos are among his best, and are a great example of what I wrote earlier about what separates Petrucci from other ultra-technical players - at his best, his solos serve to take the song naturally from one place to the next (incidentally another good example of this talent of his is in the much-maligned 'Forsaken', whose pre-chorus solo is similar to that of 'Home'). They are ridiculously convoluted, yes, but so perfect for the song.

The coda at the end is the band having a lot of fun, something which I sensed was missing from their later MP-albums.

I'll leave it there. It's their greatest song in my opinion, the crowning moment (so far) of one of the greatest collection of songs any band has ever recorded.

Crow

Wouldn't rank it this high myself but it's certainly quite a good song  :tup
Can't complain about seeing it here, that's for sure.

turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

An amazing song. Definitely deserves such praise. Not sure I would give it the first spot but it's up there in the top 5.

Good list Dave.

Home would be way up on my list of favs also. I've heard it hundreds of times and it still blows me away every time.
