I just got chills listening to this song.  Once that first chorus hits.  I've got those HD tracks, and the dynamics when all of that kicks in is incredible.  There was so much power in it.  And the ending gives me chills every time on the I am home part.  Those harmonies are beautiful.

It's heart-breakingly beautiful...   :millahhhh :heart

Agreed, this song has given me chills several times already, truly a beautiful and passionate tune.

Prog Snob

I am loving this song more and more with each listen.  I've been listening to the CD nonstop from start to finish.  TBP is the only song I have replayed before continuing to the next song.

Bertielee

My favorite track of the album. The JP "solo" after the second chorus brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it.

My brother Tim got the CD yesterday (he's been a fan as long as I have), and the first text I got from him this morning simply read:

Song 5 is crazy good.

:hat :hat :hat

That's what I said too the first time! I was first listening without looking at any of the titles and was saying how Song 5 was great :lol

TAC

I like it more and more with each listen,
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

YES! I'm glad I'm not the only one. The ending of The Bigger Picture always goes into Through My Words, and then SFAM plays through my head all the way till the end... oops.

This song is beyond amazing. Absolutely amazing song. Minute 5 until the end, is one of the best pieces of art DT has ever created.

I was really staring to worry about the album until this song came on.

False A S was good for what it was.  A quick opener
Enemy Inside - I had already heard and think it is decent but not my favorite.
The Looking Glass - I kind of disliked it on the 1st listen and it ended abruptly leaving a bad taste.
Enigma Machine - was unmemorable and was not catchy like other instruments of theirs.  I was very disappointed in it

Then the Bigger Picture came on and all was good.

I learned to like Looking Glass a lot more with repeated listens but still find Enigma Machine to be a waste of a song.

The Bigger Picture is great though.

scoutmasterdave

Great song - I echo many of the comments here.  I will say, though, that the TBP intro to is where MM's super-detuned snare drives me the most crazy.  Not sure whose brilliant idea it was to let the snare rattle around for half a second on every hit. :)

When I first heard this song, I realized how amazing this album would be. As many others have said, the final quarter of the song is just killer. James' vocal melody on the line "I've listened to the stories of resentment and disdain" is just awesome.

The song is wrapped up perfectly with "I am home". After I heard this song, I realized that it's a song that I had been needing to hear for awhile now, but I was wasn't aware of it. Hope that makes some sense.

BlobVanDam

No matter how many times I listen to this one, I just can't get into it at all. :dunno: By the chorus, I feel like skipping it.

It's the only song on the album I don't like though.

Intentional?

This is #1 on the album for me too so far.  There is nothing to not like about it.

I love the outro but am I the only one that feels like it would be better if after that there was just a soft piano part to end the song? Feels like it ends abruptly to me.

Agreed. Could have used a little bit more and a transition into a soft piano part would have been great. An amazing song, I just think it felt cut short

Laich21DT

Hmm, I think the song ends perfectly. If any song should been extended, I think it should have been TLG.

Where's the inspiration corner thread?

Yeah, I'd rather think these are just some kind of popular stock phrases. It sounds poetic and you can pretty much insert them anywhere.

So many great things about this song. I will post in more detail later when I have the energy.

On the lighter side of DT, this is my favorite of anything they've done, and that includes Images. That alone is amazing. If you had told me that would be the case a month ago, I would have told you to get out of town.

This has been a wonderful surprise and in inspirational track that I know will endure for years and years to come. In addition to all the touching musical moments, it actually has GREAT lyrics. These are some of my favorite DT lyrics ever. I can't believe this came from the same man who actually put in a song "sucking on his pipe" and "all the finest wines."

FlyingBIZKIT

Probably my favorite from the new album. Really good

wolfking

The way James says the word 'flame' in the heavy verse is so fucking badass, and Petrucci's heavy ass chords underneath just slay!  :hefdaddy

DeanTheater

Probably my top 3 on the album which I consider to be DT's best release since SDOIT.  IT is still my favorite on the album due to the outro.   But, the outro on TBP is amazing also.  Great song in a strong collection of DT songs!

So is this little *drop* sound a few seconds after "and I'll reach the water's edge" at 1:47 an intentional "water" nugget or did someone accidentally record an instant messenger or SMS alert that went unnoticed?

Greetings...

THIS REMINDS ME:

In Illumination Theory V. Surrender, Trust, and Passion -

James - Passion grows within your heart
Petrucci - (grows within your mind)

Is this correct? It's what I'm hearing.

I believe the sound you are referring to is fret noise from sliding.

MasterLomaxus

During the "would you talk me off the ledge..." part of the song, it initially sounded like "Would you take me out for lunch."   I laughed

Hmmm, definitely not. There's keys and bass and light drums, the acoustic strumming is very subdued. So the *drop* would be too loud for fret noise and also at a strange time, rhythmically speaking. Still feels like someone left something close to a microphone.

Let's call it a mysterious audio artifact, makes the song even more interesting, doesn't it?

I'm pretty sure it's a bass slide. It's timed just before the next bar/note, and I can hear the tone quite clearly. I think they used up all of their mysterious audio artifacts on ADTOE. :P
