I don't have 5.1 system and I'm not an audio expert. However, my TV has a surround option on the audio settings. When I put it on things sound a little more separated.  Would it be worth buying the the 5.1 version and listening to it like that through my blu-ray player, or not really?

mikeyd23

Well I joined what looks like the majority here and just picked up the CD + 5.1 mix DVD from Best Buy!! Great price too, on sale for $13.99, so I can't complain too much about that!

I don't have a 5.1 surround sound system or anything, but I've been considering getting one. I'm pretty sure my Mac will play the DVD in the 5.1 mix though, so through my good headphones, it should sound great. If not, I spent a few extra bucks to support the band I love and it might give me a reason to tell my wife why we need to buy a 5.1 surround sound system, haha!  ;D

I'd stick with the stereo version. I wouldn't listen to music on my TV and those fake surround options usually don't sound good.

I only intended to get the standard jewel case version, but the store I bought it from only had the deluxe version with the 5.1 mix, so I got that.

I got the box set and figured I'd be done there, but the DVD-A 2.0 MLP is even louder than the CD.  Therefore, like a sucker, I also picked up the HDTracks release (which SHOULD have been the stereo mix on the DVD-A).

Wearing my Blur shirt, listening to 90's rap, going to get DT12. :)

Agreed, but as I've said in a different thread, I've ended up paying a total of just over £20 and for that I've got the case with booklet etc. (something I like to have), a 5.1 mix which I expect to use in the future once I eventually get a 5.1 system, and nicely mastered HD tracks which I'll do most of my listening with. I also have the original CD which, to be honest, I'll probably never use now, but overall I think I've got pretty good value from what I've bought.

This seems common, as it also happened to me on the first store I visited, don't really understand why, unless the standard was seling more than the deluxe.

Rhayader

None. I hated the album, but if I had loved, I would buy vinyl.

Tunnel Vision

I need to change my vote......just cancelled my order for deluxe edition and bought the HD Tracks version instead. I'll pick up the standard jewel case from best buy this weekend so I have a physical copy.

KevShmev

I got the Deluxe digi CD + 5.1 mix edition for only $13.99 from Best Buy yesterday. :hat

kirksnosehair

I got the box set.  Anyone who lives in North America who ordered the box set from Roadrunner get theirs yet?

dream416

I live in Canada & mine arrived today.   :metal

BlackInk

Yeah got mine today too.

By the way, just noticed... Is there no version with instrumental versions of the album?

Kotowboy

Yes.

Or no.

There is no version with just the instrumentals.

... So there will be no instrumental versions of any of the songs? That is mighty disappointing...

wolfking

Doesn't look like it.  I never liked instrumental versions myself.  The instrumental disc that came with Black Clouds I still have yet to listen to.

BlackInk

I think the instrumental versions of BC&SL and especially ADToE are awesome. If I want to just sing along to just the music or if I wanted to hear the instruments better during the chorus or verses or something they are really great.

wolfking

I guess if you are a singer they are handy.

There is an instrumental version of TEI on the Japanese release: https://www.discogs.com/Dream-Theater-Dream-Theater/release/4928641

Other than that, there are no instrumentals, correct. :-[

Dublagent66

I usually get the box set, but this time I just bought it from iTunes.   I might get the box set later on.

Standard edition only.

I do not have a turntable or surround system, and have no plans to buy either, so the 5.1 and vinyl would be useless to me.  The box set is really cool.  But, again, given that I do not have a turntable, most of the value of the box set disappars for me.  While I would love to have the Take This For The Pain footage, it just isn't worth the price of the box set to me for that and some fancy packaging.  I don't usually buy digital copies.  Once I have the CD, I typically burn a copy to play in my car and rip a copy to my computer to listen to in the office, and then keep the CD on the shelf.  It doesn't make sense to buy a separate digital copy.  I think the only digital copies I have ever gotten are (1) where it was free with a pre-order, or (2) where I am buying only a song or two here and there rather than a whole album.

That all being said, I really like that the band continues to offer different options for its new album releases.  For me, this time around at least, the standard edition is the most practical.

I got the box set because I want to frame the album cover and hang in on the wall in my new studio, which I officially opened yesterday  :hat

This. 'Twas quite convenient.

The Letter M

I got the single CD Jewel Case version up at my Best Buy today for 9.99 + tax, just to have in my car for the next few weeks to listen to. I did the same thing with BC&SL when I got the box set the week of release - bought a single CD jewel case version as well.

So, two versions for me...technically 3 if you count the vinyl in the box set...well, technically 4 if you count the FLAC download I got for pre-ordering the box set.

cool34231a

Got the Deluxe Edition, but ripped it all to FLAC, as I keep all my music on my NAS and can play it all from almost any device.
I just wish Dream Theater would give free HDtracks codes to Deluxe purchasers to give us proper HD stereo mix.
