Oh, wow.  I thought I was the only one on this entire forum that thinks Haken is just awful.

Not entirely awful but definitely the most overrated of the bands we've collectively gushed over.

They aren't completely awful. More like meh. Celestial Elixir is amazing, Streams is pretty good, but everything else is just... meh. Cockroach King is awful though. Bloody hell.

bosk1

Well, yeah, I don't mean like Hell's Kitchen awful, or even Eve awful.  But, yeah, "meh" and "overrated" about sum it up.

Zook

Hell's Kitchen is brilliant, you turd!

Well, they're one of the better bands for prog rock nowadays but, in my opinion, don't hold a candle for older prog (even from 00's).

I don't know if I could give any youtube examples simply because I don't generally go out of my way to listen to jazz, but the first thing that comes to mind is the jazzy section in Haken's Cockroach King

I'm not listening to that song again.

:lol :lol

My thought exactly!

Lucien

Tantalized, by the cockroach, and its promise
I fantasized, about soaring, with golden wings

Hey, I think Haken are OK.

But look up "cringeworthy" in the dictionary, and Cockroach King is there.

MADNESS!

We actually agree on something.

Joshin U

We should rename this thread, "What are your thoughts on Haken?"  :lol

But seriously.

Cockroach King is the second worst song on the album.

Still better than most of the songs on DT12 though.

I know I should keep these opinions out of the DT side, but I agree that Cockroach > DT12. But it's just, like, personal opinion, man.

Yeah, i know people do not agree with me, but i feel that the energy and innovation of this song left me very impressed, in contrast to most of DT12 songs.
Of course, this is my opinion, i'm not stating it as a fact, but i think that we're beyond the point where we say "in my opinion" in every post.

Lucien

Well, it looks like I'm not alone, though I like DT12 more than The Mountain (though I think The Mountain is generally more consistent and I can't name a song off of it I dislike)

Shadow Ninja 2.0

Is there a song on DT12 that you dislike?

Lucien

To me, The Looking Glass, The Enemy Inside, and Along for the Ride have all become "meh" to me. I enjoy them when they're playing but I don't really go out of my way to listen to them, especially The Looking Glass.

I like it, reminds me of Gentle Giant. Other than that, I don't care too much for Haken and I don't get their universal appeal.

Universal? Come now, they aren't Adele, and even she isn't universal.

Okay, let's use some common sense here man, he obviously meant within the prog world.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I wouldn't even call them universal in the prog world. They've got a decent following, but there's a fair amount of people who don't really care for them.

Dark Castle

Sure there's a lot of people that don't really care for em (me amongst that group), but over the past couple of years they've exploded in popularity as far as I can see on prog boards, magazines, and the like.

Implode

That's just from discovery. Of course the total number of people who like the band is going to increase as people discover them. However the proportion of people who like them out of all who already know them will probably stay the same.

jakepriest

Before this thread I didn't know what HAKEN is.

Also that Cockroach King song is outright awful.

I don't know what HAKEN is either, but Haken is a pretty cool guy. :p
