So I was sitting here, listening to the 15th Anniversary performance of Images And Words when I got to the end of "Under A Glass Moon" and noticed a familiar ending... it was the ending to "Your Majesty" played as the ending to UAGM!!!

How did I not notice this before?!

What other musical (or even lyrical) hints have Dream Theater done while on tour, changing up their live songs a bit to include a little "Easter Egg" of sorts that references other, sometimes older songs of theirs?

Here's the easy one:  Crimson Sunrise on 5YIALT ends with Fortune in Lies' bombastic intro.  And it's not technically a DT composition, butl I think Score's performance of UAGM has the carnival bit from the end of Universal Mind crammed into it.

TheGreatPretender

My favorite would have to be the little Metropolis Reprise that they did at the end of Finally Free on LSFNY.

Also, I saw a performance where they did Master of Puppets, and then at the end of it, they flowed right into the ending of Pull Me Under. That was really cool.

My favorite was from their performances of Learning To Live on the 8VM tour.  During the extended solo sections, they would frequently include teasers from Crossroads and La Villa Strangiatta.

Strangiato :D

By the way, I'm almost sure that the ACOS/AFIL affinity dates back to the days it was first composed, in '89.

Not strictly hinting, but the way then went from Caught in a web -> Caught in Alice's nine inch tool garden -> new millennium -> caught in a new millenium... So good...

Yeah, I always liked this one.  It's so short, simple and random but works so well.

It's often said that Peruvian Skies is like a mix between Metallica and Pink Floyd so it's only fitting how they played the song on OIALT. I think the Enter Sandman riff kicks even more ass in that context.

JP does play little teases of Paradigm Shift during the Caught In A Web choruses though!

I liked how they ended The Root OF All Evil with Razor's Edge.

Question: should this question be asked in a few months, would people be able to quote some new example of self-quoting?  ::)

The Live at bucharest version of Scarred ends with the Innocence Faded outro, pretty cool.

On the Making Waves in Toronto bootleg (a show I was at), they had an excerpt of Wish You Were Here, as well as incorporating Wherever I May Roam in the outro... which of course was AWESOME!!

Just went back to my boot of that ... never noticed it before.  Cool, and certainly not coincidental since Rush had just released Feedback, and Crossroads was one of the songs that got airtime - and was on R30.

OiaLT has lots of little goodies like that in it.  There's the wood blocks from "The Trees" (and the tones from Close Encounters) in the intro to "Trial of Tears".  "Take the Time" has the "Freebird" section.  And MP, JP, and DS all included other DT or LTE songs in their respective solos.

There's a video of this also on the "A Walk Beside The Band" fanclub DVD, it's a cool version of the song.

Also, I think the MoP/Pull Me Under mashup that was mentioned is on the 2nd DVD of the Bucharest official bootleg iirc.

At the end of Octavarium, there's a low piano note which was heard at the beginning of the album, opening TROAE.

Yeah, "Caught in a New Millenium" is one of my favs...

DT loves to end their songs with a fortune in lies. I can't think of all the instances right now but I've heard multiple instances of different songs end with that.

Octavarium is cool like that. It's intentional, and part of a bigger story. You should look at the album artwork! Lots of little references to 5 and 8. You can google search all about the themes of the album.

I think you're right.A song that you can't tell which instrument leads and which follows.Absolutely agee!

I love it when DT hints at a bunch of different instrumental parts from multiple songs and then puts it all together in the form of a medley...

:neverusethis: But seriously, I love Instrumedley

I know I'm gonna sound like a n00b, but i'm not familiar with that one.  Was that a standard release?

And a sweet tribute to Star Wars introducing Voices in there. Loved that.

Bad quality, horrible midi sounds, stupid idea but it could really work live... The transititions were quite good actually.

TheGreatPretender

I find that in the version of The Killing Hand, that they did on Reunite, as soon as they go into the extended instrumental section, that very first riff that JP plays reminds me a lot of the verse riff on One Last Time.

Caught in Alice's nine inch tool garden   :o   What the f*** is that  :o

noxon

It's a reworking of caught in a web, which formed the basis of New Millennium.

It can be found on the old bridge nj 1996 ytsejam records cd.

Is there something from Nine inch nails o.o

nobloodyname

No, it's a sludgy mash-up of Caught in a Web and New Millennium (or what became New Millennium).

Funnily enough, it appeared during random play while out cycling the other morning and I suddenly remembered how - what's the word, without being insulting? - curious it was.

The Freebird excerpt in Take the Time was wonderful.
