Gene is the beast. And it's pity Mario Duplantier have to lose in 1st round :/

Onno

MM vs. Martin Lopez is hard, but MM wins it for me.

Also, why isn't Martin Axenrot in this? His drumming is nothing short of amazing.

Because Loudwire had to make a Skin Bashers Division instead of nominating another bunch of amazing, better-than-the-nominated, out of this world drummers.

Mladen

Voted for both Mikes.

By the way, it scares me that Mangini will have to go against Danny Carey or Brann Dailor so early, it's going to be extremely tough...

I still find polls where you can vote more than once to be useless, regardless of who wins this.  :lol

Given DT's dedicated fanbase, I think he'll get through easily. These things are never voted just on skill, or else Lars Ulrich shouldn't have had a single vote against anyone. :lol

Hmm, maybe, just maybe people are not voting for Lars because of Lars' drumming skills, or lack of.  It could because the fact that there are people voting to spite the haters and get them riled up and so forth and make asses of their elitist self?

I think people (ie. fanbases) are just voting based on the band, rather than anything more complex than that. Metallica are a popular band, so people see Lars Ulrich from Metallica, and vote for him. Being such a popular band, it's also very possible the people voting aren't familiar with the other band too, so it's drummer from a band they like vs drummer from a band they've never heard.

Well, sounds to me like there are a whole lot of Metallica fans out there, that need to get slapped in the face, strapped down in chairs, and be forced to listen to some Operation Mindcrime.

Dark Castle

The fact that George Kolias is getting slaughtered by Joey Jordinson just makes me glad that these polls don't mean anything. :x

Sounds good. Then I'm really looking forward to Mike vs. Mike poll at one point, which is going to be tons of awkward. I can see this poll opened up a whole can of worms. :lol

Eh, it'll be fine. We all know that MM is the better drummer out of the two when it REALLY comes down to it. I think MP was seriously getting lazy with his drumming performance and ingenuity during the RoadRunner years and we can all tell that MM is the type of musician who is constantly trying to raise the bar in terms of his own proficiency and skill in his drumming craft.

I think MP is great and he was my favorite drummer for many years (still is a favorite), however, it's nice to be a fan of a truly amazing drummer such as MM, who also has the most laid-back, positive attitude I have ever seen coupled with an absurd level of musicianship.

tl;dr ...I'll be voting for MM

?

Everyone voting for Lars Ulrich against any other metal drummer is a troll.

Ok maybe he isn't technically the best drummer.  But he's the drummer for fuckin' Metallica dude.  He's the most successful metal drummer out there and has done insane amounts for the proliferation of metal.  So, it is not trolling to like Lars Ulrich over other people.

Say what you will about his skill, he has been the only drummer for one of the greatest bands to ever grace this planet.

I agree. He is neither best nor my favorite drummer but he was thrashing in early 80s and I'm sure he (with rest of Metallica) influenced generations of musicians.

You could say the same thing about Ringo Starr. But he was still a mediocre drummer.

Oh and also, just because Metallica is the most popular metal band, I wouldn't go as far as to call them 'one of the greatest' unless you're counting like, top 100 or something.

Yeah, well Ringo was not the only drummer of the Beatles' history.  But yeah, poor Ringo is the butt of the Beatles jokes every time.

Dark Castle

Even though he does a pretty great job drumming, I know he's nowhere near the best, but I think he's horribly underrated.

TheGreatPretender

Hey, Ringo brought something new to drumming. He brought showmanship, something we know Portnoy used to the utmost. So that's not to say he deserves no credit. I'm just saying, give credit where credit is due, and neither Ringo nor Larz are "great drummers". They're good. They perform(ed) exactly what they needed to for their respective bands. Larz definitely puts a lot of effort and heart into his drums, so they do sound bombastic, but in terms of actual drumming ability, it's nothing to write home about.

Everybody has their own idea about what makes a band/guitarist/drummer/musician 'great', and that's okay.

Quoting myself here because it's equally relevant here.

And feel free to quote your own response, TGP.   ;)

Nah, I think I made my point, haha.

But still, I think it's safe to say that most people aren't voting for Larz because they're objectively examining and comparing his drumming to Rockenfield and concluding that he's the better musician. They're voting because they like Metallicurh, and probably don't even know who Rockenfield is.

snapple

Sean Reinert losing to Portnoy hurts my balls. But, I'm happy to see that Reinert isn't getting completely smoked (25%!)

I agree, but it doesn't bother me at all.  It's an opinion poll.  I don't expect much objective examination.  But that's just me, and there's nothing wrong with anything you're saying.  :)

Scott Rockenfield vs. Lars Ulrich:  :rollin

Charlie Benante vs. Igor Cavalera: :dangerwillrobinson

If either Charlie or Igor ends up against MM, genie won't get a vote from me.

The next matchup, will not be funny... I think i have to go for Danny Carey on that one, sorry guys

Kotowboy

Lars will never be as good as he was in 1991 ever again but he has been improving since about 2006.

Kirk is the one who buggers up every solo he plays.

Jaq

ITT: people encourage DT fans to vote for MM because he's in Dream Theater, ascribe evil motives to people who vote for the drummers of bands they like.  :lol
