I absolutely LOVE this song, much more so than anticipated. This being the first single, I can't imagine how good the rest of the album must be. And the guitar tone definitely sounds like cheese enchiladas.  :metal

Enchiladas!! Interesting choice of comparison....I once heard a fellow musician describe my fellow saxophonist's solo performance as sounding like "spicy Mexican taco truck" :D

chaotic_ripper

Well, if the single is available tomorrow in the U.S., then it should be on spotify.  Right?

The amount of new pages in this thread is insane. I'm definitely not going to bother reading all of that, so here's just my thoughts:
- okay track, but nothing that really stands out
- nice radio-friendly single, apart from the solo-section
- chorus is pretty bland though and probably forgettable
- solo section seems out of place and too much wank for a radio-single
- all in all; okay track, nothing really bad, but nothing that made me go 'wow' either.

I've only listened once and I don't really plan on listening more often before the release. It didn't really grab me at first, so I'm pretty sure I can abstain a month longer.

Implode

I've listened to it probably 10 times by now. I still can't remember any of the melodies. When I try to remember it I keep hearing OTBOA and on of JLB's songs from his solo album.  :lol

purzel

so I downloaded the iTunes version and it sounds way better then the USA Today stream. drumming is awesome a JLB is much better and louder now. MM is fucking great and the song is the best single DT released in my opinion. I love the heavy sound some parts remind me of older songs and the JP solo I don't know but I thought I heard it before. I'll give this song a strong 8/10.

FlyingBIZKIT

I can't believe Dream Theater. This is a COMPLETE rip off of Anna Lee.

So...

The Enemy Inside is the " Caught In A Web " of this album then ? :neverusethis:

I've got some stuff to do, but I think the lyrics for the first verse and chorus are this

Over and over again
I relive the moment
I buried the burden within
Opened wounds hidden under my skin
Pain is real as I cut that (?)
The face I see every time
I try to speak
Starting at my crying

I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't (speak?) from the enemy inside

Blob already put the lyrics together a few pages back. He had just one gap that I filled in, but I'm pretty sure that this is 100% accurate now:

Over and over again
I relive the moment
I'm bearing the burden within
Open wounds hidden under my skin

Pain is real as a cut that bleeds
The face I see every time I try to sleep
Staring at me crying

CHORUS
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I sever myself from the world
and shut down completely
All alone in my own living hell
overcome with irrational fear

Under the weight of the world on my chest
I buckle and break as I try to catch my breath
Tell me I'm not dying

CHORUS
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I'm a burden and a travesty
I'm a prisoner of regret
Between the flashbacks and the violent dreams
I am hanging on the edge

Disaster lurks around the bend
Paradise came to an end
And no magic pill
can bring it back again

CHORUS
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

And they wonder why the music business is in trouble.

The CD is done.  I want to buy it but can't.
The Single is out.  I want to buy it but can't.

I'll wait until the CD comes out now, no single sale from me the way they would have had if I could have bought it due to the initial excitement.

TheGreatPretender

I don't even understand the appeal of buying the single, when it's going to be on the CD when I buy that.

I would have as a spur of the moment thing for the excitement of the day.

That moment is gone.

Kotowboy

More money for a hard working band who deserve it.

I get the song NOW in good quality.

Tis BOOLsheet

If the single is good quality, I might buy it so I can listen to it before the new album comes out. It's still what, two months away almost?

Kotowboy

Yeah and I don't want to trawl the internet looking for a stream of the song when i can just press play on my iTunes.

TheGreatPretender

I think they should implement a system where if you pre-order the album, you get the single right away for free. And then, for those who want to cancel their pre-orders, it deducts $1 (or however much they charge for a single) from the refund.

adamack

Oh wow...I'm just now finally getting to listen on my big speakers, and that compression issue many were talking about is indeed VERY bad, namely in the intro at around 15 seconds until the song opens up. If you keep listening to it, your ears will adjust and you will not be able to detect the over-compression due to the nature of the human ear's adaptation, but when you listen on flat response speakers or other speaker systems with fresh ears, it is very apparent.

That said, I think I am still liking the song more and more...I am in a better mood right now and it's giving me some goosebumps during some parts!

I don't know what I am gonna do until Sept. 24...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Anyone want to work on a DT project in the meantime with me? Perhaps define the top 10 DT albums, based on forum feedback/polls? Or perhaps the top 20 JP solos? Maybe even the top 50 DT songs?

Let me know!

Agreed. I think this system should be standard with all new albums for every band/artist.

I do enjoy my lists. But how do you propose to actually make a project out of it? Do you mean top JP solos or top DT songs based on votes?

WindMaster

We haven't heard anything on pre orders yet have we? I want to order this so bad.

Awesome...me too I love lists.

Still haven't worked out the exact method, but I was thinking maybe some kind of tournament system, almost like the NCAA Final Four bracket system. Maybe we could start out with 32 songs, solos, etc. (whatever the list is) and put them against each other, and the winning song moves on to the next round? And using that info, we could possibly extract an order for the songs/solos.

Definitely open to any better ideas though....I haven't thought into the above idea enough to  determine if it will be effective.

But as for the project end of it, maybe we could take the song list, once compiled, and make a nice YouTube video out of it with pictures to go along with each item in the list.

Just a thought!

I think this song is great. Probably not going to be the best on the album, but I love the heaviness and the energy. Mangini unleashed!  :metal
