So many good ones to choose from but I went with SDV, the perfect end to my favorite album

I'd like to vote Disappear, since it's got nothing and it's my 3rd favorite DT song. Unfortunately LtL is number 2

For me Finally Free was pretty obvious. Thought it would be more popular as an album closer.

Mister Gold

Gonna have to think on this one for a bit...

Had the option to vote for the entirety of 6DoIT been available, that would probably have gotten my vote. As others already pointed out, I don't see "Disappear" as an album closer, and while I love "Losing Time/Grand Finale", it's not quite as tempting an option as the entirety of 6DoIT would be.

Between the options available, I'd have to probably go for either "Learning to Live" or "Trial of Tears". Hmm... :justjen

PixelDream

'Learning to Live'. It's one hell of a snoozefest when you think about it, but at the same time it has a huge emotional impact on me. I've grown quite resistant to a lot of DT tracks on a serious emotional level, but that song never fails leave a gigantic impression.

Lucidity

God, this is such a hard choice.

SuperTaco

Octavarium is the clear choice for me, since it is my favorite Dream Theater song of all time. Learning To Live and Only A Matter Of Time deserve honorable mentions.

mocool13

Really tough choice. but LTL and Finally Free are in the lead for me. Having seen it close a show live though, the edge goes for LTL

Lowdz

LtL but as others have said, DT know how to write an album closer. These are all great songs for me. Yes, even OAMOT.

Tomislav95

Losing Time/Grand Finale is perfect closer for me. Also, LTL is great.

Ben_Jamin

Trial of tears beat Finally Free for me by a fishing wire. I love both songs as enders and standalone songs.

Learning to Live would also be a good choice, but at the end of the day it's always going to be 8V.  Not only do I prefer it as a song, but it works wonderfully as a closer -- it wraps up all the album's themes in a really coherent and beautiful way.

Sketchy

Trial Of Tears. It's my favourite DT song both musically and lyrically, and I love that way that The Wasteland just builds.

jammindude

Octavarium easily.   Perfect closer to a perfect album...which was the perfect end of a nearly perfect 4 album run.    Everything ramped up to that song....the entire album represents DT at the peak of their craft, and the song is the peak OF the peak.

And it's the only one that both ends and starts the album. :neverusethis:

yep.  Great, majestic jp solo at the end.

And I love that french horn lick at the very end of the song, too

Best song: LTL
Best song as a closer: ITNOG

JayOctavarium

My favs, in order

8VRM
LTL
ITNOG
Finally Free

Lucidity

Octavarium, for me, is undoubtedly the best song on the list, however, I think In the Name of God functions as the best closer.

ibosmiley

I always really dug Learning to Live.  Maybe it's because it was the first DT album I ever owned (WDADU being the second), and I just fell in love with the album entirely... the whole experience.  I dunno.  But Learning to Live... great closer.

aprilethereal

8VM is my favourite DT song, easy choice. ITNOG and SDV are pretty close though.

While my favourite song from the list is Octavarium, I went with TCOT, because I think it works a bit better as an album closer. Not that Octavarium is a bad album closer at all.

This.
Octavarium, Learning to live & Count of Tuscany are better songs, but they are very self-contained. For me, it was a call between ITNOG and Finally free because they provide the best feeling of closure. I went with ITNOG.

I think the layered vocals, and incredible harmonics riff close the album beautifully with LTL.  ;D

Dark Castle

Went with Space Dye Vest.
Not only is it one of my favorite DT songs, but it just leaves one in such a melancholy mood all the while ending the album very well.

As a stand alone LTL (which got my vote) but put in context Finally Free is a better closer to SFAM that LTL is to I&W.

CodyWanKenobi

Musically, I'd have to say Octavarium or The Count of Tuscany. I'm a bit more partial to TCOT though. Not sure why. It must be that chant! hahaha.

But seriously, Octavarium's outro gives me chills, but TCOT's outro makes me feel like I just finished this fuckin quest! It makes me feel triumphant, like I just returned home from a fuckin journey!  :lol
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

robwebster

In the Name of God. It's a true crescendo - the last in a string of at least four consecutive tracks that only keep getting better and better - probably the highest point of the album, and it feels very much like the conclusion to the "story" they'd been telling for the last seventy minutes, rather than a story in its own right like The Count of Tuscany, Trial of Tears, and Learning to Live sometimes do. (All very good songs, though - two of them great!)

I might prefer Beneath the Surface as a song, but as a closer ItNoG wins it.

snowdog

Learning to Live easily gets my vote as it is my favorite DT song.  I'm going to do something different and rank my top 5 album closers...

1.  Learning to Live
2.  In the Name of God
3.  Finally Free
4.  Trial of Tears
5.  Space-Dye Vest
