I would also assume Jack Black is a fan to some extent.

EDIT: I just remembered why I would think that. When he was cast for "Tropic Thunder" he demanded his character's last name to be Portnoy.

I once read that Tom Hanks is a big fan.

Then again, I could be making this up.

I'm not sure he's a fan but one of Finland's most famous athletes, long jumper Tommi Evilä has Petrucci's Ibanez signature guitar. And that's cool because I know that guy :zydar:

Let's just all pretend like this is a fact and rejoice in Tom Hanks' awesome taste in music.

This totally made me look up Tropic Thunder on wikipedia to verify that the character's name was in fact Portnoy...you were absolutely right! How did I miss that little gem when I saw that movie? However...having said that, I'm not sure that giving that particular character Portnoy necessarily means thay JB is a fan...it could just mean that he was aware of some of Mike's issues :lol

Now I'm super curious as to whether or not Jack Black is into Dream Theater!

The Fatal Tragedy

The 4th place runner-up on season 10 of American Idol, James Durbin, was noted for being into heavy metal and openly admitted that he wanted to sing songs from artists such as Queensryche and Dream Theater on the show. When asked in interviews what artist was most influential to him, he would always answer, "Mike Portnoy, from Dream Theater," and that his greatest motive in his music career would be to one day perform with MP. There's an image with Durbin and MP somewhere on the internet. Most intriguing was James wanted MP to perform the drumming on his first solo album to which MP actually re-tweeted something like, "anytime dude!"

Chris Jericho is a big DT fan and even drew some prog influence on the Fozzy song "Wormwood". Great track from probably the bands best album by the way.

Another Pro Wrestler with the ring name Donovan Morgan used "Metropolis" as his second entrance music. I know he's not famous, but is that not an epic song to make an entrance to? :metal

Epic enough the tha San Antonio Spurs had used it.

Does MP count as a famous DT fan?

introduced as "Jeff Portnoy"  :rollin :rollin :lol :rollin :rollin

I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin J. Anderson is a DT fan, since James Labrie was on one of those Roswell Six albums.

I was thinking Chris Jericho, as well. I know Sebastian Bach is.

I wouldn't say Sebastian Bach is.  Him and James were friends back in the late 80s/early 90s.  I can't quite remember but I think Bach may have been the one that recommended James for Winter Rose

Oddly enough, Jon Huntsman is how I found out about Dream Theater.

Whats the story behind this

Was just about to post this.  He is.  I met him at Toronto's Fan Expo last year, wearing a DT shirt and he said "I know those guys".  Showed him my tattoo (combination Majesty/Starman... Setlist Scotty's avatar), and he immediately took out his phone to take a picture.

Oddly enough, Jon Huntsman is how I found out about Dream Theater.

Whats the story behind this

I was on a political forum a few years back (still am, actually, though I don't post much as politics tends to just piss me off nowadays) and people were discussing Jon Huntsman as a contender for the nomination.

Someone mentioned that he (Huntsman) was a fan of Dream Theater, and I'm slightly fuzzy on exactly how it was said, but someone posted something to the effect of "there's only so many extended drum solos a person can take".

This piqued my interest, so I looked them up on Wikipedia. It mentioned that they were known for technical proficiency, but never got much radio play. I read some more, decided it was something I might like, and YouTube'd them.

Somewhat fittingly, the first song I heard was "Pull Me Under" as it was the first search result. I didn't think too much of it at first. I mean, it was good enough. The playing was top-notch, vocals were excellent, but it didn't really resonate with me at the time. (I was pretty into power metal at the time, so I guess I was looking for something"catchier").

Still, a couple of weeks later, I was rolling through my YouTube history (as I do when I'm bored) and found it. I thought, "well, I'll listen to that again,". So I did, and it was awesome! I couldn't believe I hadn't cared for it the first time. I looked up several other songs, Take The Time, Another Day, and loved those too.

Then I figured, "well, this stuff is all from the 90s. I should check out their recent stuff." Quick search of Wikipedia shows their newest album was Black Clouds. So I listen to A Nightmare To Remember.

I did not like it. At all. It was way too heavy, (power metal, remember :lol) and it just didn't sound like the Dream Theater I loved (for all of one week). Then I heard the Beautiful Agony section, and loved it. Then Count Of Tuscany, and so on. Eventually I grew to love the whole album. (too-heavy parts included :lol)

I bought the live version of Six Degrees from the Amazon MP3 store (¢99 for 42 minutes, can't beat that) After listening to it about a dozen times, I decided this was my favorite band. I ordered the CD of Black Clouds (which is  one of the first three CDs I ever bought with my own money, the other two being Avantasia's The Scarecrow and Ayreon's 01011001 at the same time). I loved it, and the next time I had money, I bought I&W, Awake and Scenes.

This was the inception of my love for Dream Theater, and I owe it all to that condescending guy on some forum. I don't remember who it was, or I'd go thank him. Anyway, you probably weren't expecting this novel-esque reply, so I'll end this here.

tl;dr some guy on a forum recommended them.

Madman Shepherd

haha.  nice.

I always found it interesting that Huntsman never had any qualms about proclaiming Dream Theater Day back in 2007 especially when one of the lyrics off of their latest album at the time talked about fighting for the dark master of sin.

Davide Moro, captain of Empoli Football Club, a team which plays in Serie B (second division) but also played some seasons in Serie A (our major league) is a really big DT fan. He also happens to be a really good singer, and of course he sings in a DT cover band! (here is their version of A Change of Seasons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aokYRChVBYc)  He uses to show his love for the guys wearing in every game his own custom captain armband!

I think he is a fan, although he hasn't followed them actively in the recent years. This is what he said in 2003 (I know it's an old post, but at least it proves that he HAS been a DT fan): https://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/opeth-archived/64552-mike-portnoy-likes-opeth-2.html#post1091898
Quote from: Mikael ÅkerfeldtHowever, no I don't dislike Dream Theater. But I'm not so fanatic about them as I used to be.

I have all their albums and "Awake" and "Falling into infinity" + "Scenes" are all great albums. 2nd Cd too, but the cheese factor on that album is incredibly high with all the cheesy saxophone "Beach" sounding solos...still a good album.
The first I don't like so much because of the singer + the latest I thought was kinda un-happening. I've seen them live on every tour since "Awake" and that gig I can say was marvellous! Also on the "Scenes" tour they did a massive show in Stockholm. But last time I saw them they seemed tired and "old" almost. Especially in comparison with Pain of salvation which did a great gig. (I like them MUCH better live than on record)
I even left before the DT show had ended.

No, I am not as big a fan as I used to be but I'd guess I'm still a "fan", and I love John's guitar playing!
I'd like to see DT elaborate more with the sounds the got on "Falling"...I like the more mellow "Peruvian skies" type of songs.

That post was from 2002. But it is cool to read his thoughts on them

Another case in Italy.

I know it might be hard to believe, especially for those who know these girls, but they said in an interview some years ago that they like Dream Theater. I'm talking about Paola e Chiara, an italian pop music female duo. I guess they're little known outside our borders, but in Italy they're quite famous. Here's a pic and a video:

Still, he did do this back in 2009. It may have been just a favor he did for MP, but I don't think he would have done it if he hadn't liked the music.
