Hey Everyone,

I've been thinking about which songs I'm basically never listening to and wondered what your personal "Bottom 5" would look like. This isnt really a hate-list, but more of a meh-list  ;) A lot of songs grew to me over time but these just dont seem to make the cut.

I'm aware that this is not the most "positive" way to make one of my first posts, but rest assured that i love DT just like you do  ;) :metal

So here it goes, in no particular order:

WDADU
Yeah I'm cheating on the first entry and listing the whole album. I just don't like Charlies voice and the audio quality of the album seems outright terrible to me. The Killing Hand is decent, but I prefer the LATM version..

The Answer Lies Within
I have mixed feelings about Octavarium because some of the tracks just sound too "poppy" to me. This one is probably the worst. It's short and doesn't offer much, lyrically and musically. It sounds kinda like the band felt obliged to add a ballad, but didn't really feel like making one.

Ministry of Lost Souls
Okay, so this song largely consists of that overused chord progression you hear in almost every radio song - but why is this so terribly long? This might actually have been good as a 6-7 minute piece. But the way it is, it just feels incredibly stretched - it doesn't offer enough musical material to sustain for 15 minutes. They probably felt they needed another epic besides ITPOE, but I think Forsaken would have offered much for ground to build an epic on.

Stream of Conciousness
This is probably the most controversial entry in my list. I don't really dislike this song, it just doesn't touch me at all. The pace seems really odd - it sounds like it should be played fast and aggressively but is, for some reason, artificially held back. It makes for such a strange contrast to the rest of the album - not slow enough to be a breather like Vacant, but too thin to deliver the energy and power of the other songs.

You Not Me
I don't know why I dislike this particular song so much, but with all the history connected to this song and the album, I consider this the bottom of the DT-barrel. FII has it's greats (especially PS), but this piece is devoid of everything i love about DT. I've first listened to FII about a year ago, and I played You Not Me about 2 times since then.

Looking forward to hear your opinions!

BlobVanDam

I'm not counting any non-album tracks here, otherwise there wouldn't be any studio tracks in my list.

WDADU
I'm cheating too, but otherwise it's going to be most of my list.
If I was counting these individually, I'd only count Status Seeker, Light Fuse and Get Away, The Ones Who Help to Set The Sun and Only a Matter of Time, none of which I have ever listened the whole way through once. I just can't.
The rest of the album actually wouldn't make my list though, at least if we're counting other versions, as I have listened to the songs several times between Marquee and other live versions. AFIL and TKH got listened to quite a bit when I first got Live at the Marquee! And I've listened to Afterlife plenty, between Score, and IaW era bootlegs.

Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
I'm not sure if I've ever listened to this song the whole way through. It's not a bad song by any means, I just don't find it very interesting, and it's sandwiched between songs I don't like, so it gets overlooked. Plus it's got the whole U2 thing going on, which puts me off.

Space Dye Vest
Same as above. I know I've given this song more of a chance than LSOAD, but I'm still not sure if I've ever made it through the song. Maybe once.

Scarred
I've listened to this song maybe once the whole way through, and listened to sections here and there for the sake of discussion. So at a stretch I'd say I've listened to it twice completely, but I've definitely listened to snippets more often.

Take Away My Pain
I've listened to it several times, but I don't like the vibe of it. I love that solo, and the melodies are really nice throughout, but unfortunately I don't like the style. But it's not a bad song.

I've listened to every song since then a lot more, especially with them being fresh releases while I was fan, even though I may not have come to like every song. So this isn't my "bottom 5" list. It's just a "least listened to" list.

wolfking

Off the top of my head I'd say;

Anna Lee
Take Away My Pain
Repentance
Beneath the Surface
The Best of Times

hefdaddy42

The Answer Lies Within
You Not Me
Raw Dog
Prophets of War
Status Seeker
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Bolsters

Pick any five songs from WDADU. That's my list.
Bolsters™

Nekov

I'm doing a top 7

The Root of all Evil
The Answer Lies Within
These Walls
I Walk Beside You
Panic Attack
Never Enough
Sacrificed Sons

wasteland

Interesting thread, and I believe at least one controversial pick from me:

Just Let Me Breathe
The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun
Home
The Best Of Times
This Dying Soul (beyond the first 10 seconds)

Phoenix87x

1. A nightmare to remember

2. A rite of passage

3. The Shattered Fortress

4. Repentance(never cared for it)

5. Prophets of war

But the good news is that besides those 5, and maybe 1-2 more, I pretty much like DT's entire catalog.

jingle.boy

Off the top of my head...

The Dark Eternal Night
Anna Lee
You Not Me (although, I like You Or Me)
Status Seeker
The Answer Lies Within
Quote from: ReaperKK on July 28, 2018, 07:12:37 PMI didn't know I could handle another 10 inches and it was rough but in the end I'm glad I did it.

Scorpion

Raw Dog

It's not really bad, but there is little enjoyable here, and I don't have it on my computer, so I almost never think about listening to it.

New Millennium

This is kinda cheating, because I really like the opening, but I turn it off around one minute or so in. While that technically means that I haven't listened to it even once, it does get some play time.

Octavarium

Not bad, either, but far too long. Ideas for ten minutes stretched over twenty-five, plus the single most overrated DT solo in form of Razor's Edge.

The Answer Lies Within

Pleasant, but ultimately boring. No thanks.

I Walk Beside You

See TALW.

Zydar

#11
The Ministry of Lost Souls (my least favourite DT song)
Raw Dog
The Ones Who Help to Set The Sun
Light Fuse And Get Away
Repentance

Something like that.

Edit: Forgot to add a 5th song.

krands85

I'm also only going with studio album tracks only. In chronological order:

Status Seeker
Light Fuse and Get Away
The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
You Not Me
Burning My Soul

My least listened songs were always going to be on WDADU and FII, because those are the 2 albums that I've listened to the least. When I do listen to songs from them, I tend to just pick my favourites - eg. The Killing Hand, Afterlife, Trial of Tears, Lines in the Sand. Just Let Me Breathe was another contender, but I've had more listens to that because of the live versions.

There are a few other songs that I don't care for and don't listen to much, but they are on albums that I listen to as a whole more regularly. I never usually skip songs if I'm listening to an album.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Wow. Although I love TBOT and TOWHTSTS I can't say those are controversial but Home definitely is. What don't you like about it?

VincentMDO

1) Space Dye-Vest
2) Anna Lee
3) Through Her Eyes
4) The Shattered Fortress
5) Far from Heaven

Can't speak for Wasteland, but I think Home loses a lot of steam after womp-womp. There's a great intro, cool but unexceptional verses, (albeit with some lush vocal melodies and harmonies) and a really dull instrumental section. A really cool six minute song in the gangly body of a twelve minuter.

wasteland

You know, rob, you should speak for me a lot more often.

Besides, it's really uninteresting to me. I don't hate it like I hate TGP, for instance, the song has many great moments and I'm aware of that. I'm just indifferent towards it.

MoraWintersoul

Since I've hardly ever listened to original WDADU songs, SC, and BCSL since... probably the split, I'll just specify which songs I've heard less than five times in my lifetime, counting the live versions as well:

- New Millenium
- You Not Me
- Never Enough (only once)
- The Answer Lies Within
- Prophets Of War
- The Shattered Fortress

KevShmev

Probably:

You Not Me
Constant Motion
Forsaken
Never Enough
Regression (simply because I do not listen to it unless I listen to all of Scenes from start to finish, and that is rare now)

wasteland

I'm picturing James frantically reading the posts of this thread and taking notes for next's years setlist.  :lol

CrimsonSunrise

I won't include any WDADU tunes :)

1. Anna Lee
2. Take away my Pain
3. Beneath the Surface
4. Repentance
5. Constant Motion

I hope they actually listen to James about his preferred songs so that I never have to hear New Millenium ever again :lol he said he liked Never Enough back in 2005 though :mehlin

Promotional facade. Telling the world that you hate a song off your latest album is not really the definition of good PR  :rollin

iamtheeviltwin

Since I often listen to albums complete when I listen to DT, there are few songs I listen to "least"...so I'll do this as the 5 songs I would normally skip if I didn't like to listen to complete albums:

1) Constant Motion
2) New Millennium
3) Killing Hand
4) Ministry of Lost Souls
5) Burning My Soul

The Letter M

Raw Dog
Not being on an album, I rarely play it, but that's only half the reason why I don't listen to it...

You Not Me
I've completely replaced this with the "You Or Me" original demo, it's much better and I can't really listen to the album version of the song anymore.

Status Seeker
Light Fuse And Get Away
The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun
These three just don't get listened to a lot because they've been played live the least from WDADU. The other 5 songs have been played more, so I tend to listen to them more.

-Marc.

Lolzeez

Prophets Of War
Build Me Up,Break Me Down
The Shattered Fortress
The Answer Lies Within
Never Enough

MoraWintersoul

yorost

The Root of all Evil
The Answer Lies Within
I Walk Beside You
Panic Attack
Sacrificed Sons

The middle four songs from Black Clouds and Silver Linings are close to matching these.

Wait, so you trash these songs on a regular basis, but you've never really listened to any of them from start to finish?  OMG, that is rich. :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin

namgalsipsclar

Going studio album only, and not including WDADU, otherwise itd all be from there:

Honor Thy Father
The Shattered Fortress
In the Presence of Enemies (both parts)
Repentance
Sacrificed Sons

It tends to be long songs that i find uninteresting, the short uninteresting ones I'm less tempted to skip I guess, which means songs like Just Let Me Breathe have more plays than they deserve really, for the simple reason that I can't be bothered to take my ipod out of my pocket

wasteland

@KS: I trash Constant Motion regularly, but I have listened through it it only once, and recently.  :lol

  See, I don't get that.  If you don't like a song, you don't like it, but only listening to it once or twice and deciding you don't like it, especially when it is by a band you love, seems pretty dumb to me.  I am not saying you have to force yourself to like anything, but if I gave up on songs I wasn't wild about the first or second time around, there would be a lot of songs I would be missing out on that I now love.
