I kinda like it. It's definitely in my bottom 20 or 10 DT songs, but I still find myself singing along a bit when it comes up in FII.

Well, that's the thing, isn't it? Even if it's a least favorite DT song, it's still awesome.

I've never had a problem with this song, I've always enjoyed it, quite a lot actually.

Buddyhunter1

Quite an underrated song. I like it a lot.

Not sure if this has been discussed or not, but what is that voice in the background (MP's?) at around 1:15 saying?

I don't have it with me to check the time.  Are you talking about the "Step right up, folks!"?

Yes, MP's voice is in the background yelling something or asking a question, couldn't make out what he says.

"Step right up, [?]" Can't make out the last word. "Step right up, now" maybe?

The "MTV" part makes me cringe...

???  Why?
It sounds dated and cheesy.
But doesn't MTV still play mostly shit music? :neverusethis:

By dated do you mean it sounds like it was from 1997?

They do. It's just short clips though, and in the background of whatever reality show is on at the moment.

I'm pretty sure it's "folks".

Dublagent66

It's a decent song.  Doesn't deserve as much hate as it gets.

Does MTV even play music?

And it's eMpTyV. And I like it.

^Well, I bet all those reality shows could flush your mind down the drain too! :lol

Cyclopssss

Well, given the fact that they have had MTV to thank for their only ever huge 'hit' it is indeed a little cynical that they would come up with that lyric...

I thought it sounded that way when it was released.  One reason I've never liked the song very much.

Agree.
One of the very rare DT songs I don't listen anymore.

daisycutter88

I tend to like the fast and heavy tunes from each album the most and this tune was no exception.  Love this track.  The lyrics also mean a lot to me.  When my beloved MTV started turning into crap in the mid 90s, JLMB spoke the truth.  Plus there is the fact that I DESPISE the music of Nirvana and especially Blind Melon.  The reference to Shannon Hoon and Kurt Cobain always brings a smile to my face.  In my head I prefer the lyrics, "Make yourself an asshole name!"

TheGreatPretender

I'm not into this song musically so much, but I do love the message behind it, and just how in your face it is. It's cool to see DT (or at least Portnoy) stick it to the mainstream music industry.

Invisible

I'm not a big fan of the lyrics, the message is not bad but the way they did it could've been done miles better I think, despite that flaw(in my eyes of course), the song itself is really good, great groove and great drumming and I love the part where the drums are practically left alone and then the band joins back, excellent moment. I don't get the "it's straightforward therefore it's bad" statement, DT has always had straightforward songs and some of them are among their best.

And I actually love Blind Melon's first album, by the way :P.

jakepriest

I really dislike the vocal melodies on this song. And Derek's awful synth sound doesn't help. It remains a bottom-10 DT song for me.

son_ov_hades

As with all of Falling Into Infinity this song is great. Sure it sounds "dated", because 1997 was a long time ago. If they did this song now it would be awkward as hell, but in this case dated is not a negative at all.

energythief

Love the hell out of the song. The carnival atmosphere is totally appropriate for the subject matter, and the lyrics calling back to earlier songs are very clever. A favorite of mine.

Rodni Demental

The song definitely breaks my top 50. I didn't know it was a song that wasn't overly liked until I came here. It was one of the more memorable bits of FII on first impression. It's got some cool rhythms and syncopation among the instruments, making it one of DTs more 'groovy' songs. The 'Strike up your best angst ridden posture' section is completely rockin' on the guitars and a powerful vocal moments for the album.  :metal

The play on words from Take The Time almost made it feel like somewhat of an indirect sequel, if not a polarising successor of sorts. It was well placed in the setlists during that time and on the OIAL and LSFNY shows it came off quite strongly. And the eMpTy V bit just seemed like a fun little pun, I couldn't imagine how it's cringeworthy, hypocritical or offensive in anyway.

The problem is there are so many words that could talk about good things, meanwhile, end up getting a negative connotation. We need alternate words that express how good these statements are.
Like wankery. What some people see as a negative is a blatant display of sheer musical excellence, and I'm all for it.

In this case, the song is like a time stamp in a very particular era of music, so instead of dated, I'd say it's more like it's historic.

PwnsomeWin

I don't understand why no one loves this song. It's my #6 DT song. So groovy and catchy. So energy... power.

Zook

It's a silly song, but I don't hate it anymore.

Not a huge fan of the song, but I loved the '05 version.
