BAI is somewhat overrated, but Voices is great.

Nice to see all those tasty ballads in the top 15!

Another update because why the fuck not.

08 – Scarred – Awake
The best song off of Awake by a hair. I love how this song manages to blend different styles together perfectly – the bluesy intro, the calm first verse, the aggression of the later verses and the whacky solos are all awesome on their own, but I really love how they come together and form one of DT's best pieces of music.

07 – Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper – Images and Words
This is often considered to be Dream Theater's quintessential song and I can definitely understand why, because every member is totally on fire here. The lyrics are a little nonsensical, but LaBrie is still absurdly strong here, the way that he delivers some of those passages is nothing short of astounding. The instrumental section is pretty much out of this world and features one of Dream Theater's best unisons. Also, MYUNG BASS SOLO! :metal :metal

Yeahhhh Metropolis. I agree that LaBrie is on fire, it's one of his best songs.

Two awesome songs. Can't go wrong with either. Breaking All Illusions and Voices are great as well.

I'm pretty sure Metropolis, ACOS and Scarred will all appear on the list

But yeah, both songs are pure awesomeness, especially Scarred!

Longest write-up on this list incoming.

06 – Blind Faith – Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Best fucking song on Six Degrees. I totally love everything about this masterpiece – great lyrics, great performances by all the members and an instrumental section that is jawdroppingly amazing (DAT UNISON) – but what I like most about this is the mood that it creates. It’s somewhat sombre and airy and subdued and oh fuck me I can’t explain it, but it’s awesome and definitely unique.

05 – In the Name of God – Train of Thought
Ladies and gentlemen, I present you, the first Dream Theater song that I ever heard. Does anyone know Frets on Fire? It’s a free guitar hero clone with an online community where you can get a shitload of custom-made songs. When I was beginning to play this game, I simple got the largest song pack that was available, figuring it would keep me busy – and it did, largely because I could never, ever manage In the Name of God. By the time I had managed to finish it, I had fallen completely in love with that song and started checking out Dream Theater soon afterward.

Anyway, the song is awesome, and not only for personal reasons. It has some great lyrics and a powerful chorus during the first five minutes, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. After a short groovy bass interlude, it builds up more and more and becomes more and more crazy, leading into that unison, which was the first time that I remember being completely astounded by music in general. The break and the new riff around the ten minute mark are completely awesome and the outro (especially the live version) is a worthy conclusion to this epic.

Thanks to this song, I got into Dream Theater, found DTF and consequently discovered a large portion of the music that I’m currently into. And for that, this song will always have a special place in my heart.

It's not a song I like, at all, but now I feel like I should definitely say: "Thank you, ITNOG"  :)

Two amazing, amazing songs. :tup (although I wouldn't say BF is quite the best song on SDOIT, just because there are other songs on the album that manage to be even more perfect).

My brother asked me to tell him which DT songs are particularly fun to play, to dl on Frets On Fire, I just gave him some of my favorites + JP's Jaws Of Life and let's say he never completed any because of how hard they were :lol

Scorpion

Well, I nerded the game pretty hard two years ago or so, until it lost it's appeal for me.

The streak of excellent picks continues! :metal ITNOG is more than deserving of a long writeup.

Prog Snob

Two great choices!  Blind Faith is brilliant and ITNOG is probably my favorite off of ToT.

inb4  ACOS , 8VM
He has made it pretty clear that we won't see Octavarium on the list.

I do expect ACOS to appear, though, and the remaining 3 might be Eve, Trial of Tears and maybe Lines in the Sand.

Unlegit

Two great songs. Totally agree with what you've said about In the Name of God.

Scorpion

04 – Lines in the Sand – Falling Into Infinity

This song is probably one of the grooviest that Dream Theater have ever written. The main riff is completely awesome and I love how the calmer verses build up to that awesome chorus, which is only heightened in awesomeness by Doug Pinnick's backing vocals. After two verses and choruses, we come to the single reason that this song is so revered – Petrucci's best fucking guitar solo in his whole career. :hefdaddy The rest of the song is awesome as well, I like how it expounds on the main riff again and injects the groovy flavour once again. Awesome song.

The guitar solo is definitely one of JP's best ever. The rest of the song is pretty good, but I don't really care for Doug's vocals.

senecadawg2

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful song!

Right up there with Trial of Tears in the 'untouchable' category. Too bad the rest of the album pales in comparison.

Great choice. :tup That "groove" is the reason I got into the song in the first place, and one of the first that got me into FII.

Scorpion

03 – Eve – The Silent Man (single)
If there was ever a Dream Theater song that could be called "beautiful", this is it, without doubt. I once played this to my music teacher and he compared it with works of Alban Berg, where every note is exactly where it should be, and any change would only make the song worse. I don't really know Alban Berg's music that well, but I agree with this assessment on Eve one hundred percent.

Or, at least, did until I heard the '93 live version, which introduced samples to the song. I hadn't actually thought that that was possible, but it was even better. The samples still send shivers down my spine whenever I hear them, giving the whole song a new atmosphere against which the original one pales in my opinion.

If anyone has not yet heard this song, do it now. I don't know anyone who has done so and doesn't like the song. And for good reason, because it really is one of DT's best.

"In the dark night,
across the bleak wilderness,
guide us on to our lord Jesus,
guide us home."
