I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find a thread on it.

The question, What musician presently alive could serve as a permanent replacement for one of the members presently in the band should they leave/quit.

If JMX left I think Vic Wooten would be proficient enough to fill the role  :hefdaddy

Metrovarium

If Mike Portnoy ever left, I think Mike Mangini would be a good replacement for him.

Is this 2010 again?

What if Mike Mangini left?  Would we end up with Marco Minnemann?

Kotowboy

Mike Mangini - Thomas Lang PLEASE - we don't need another OMG IM SO WACKY drummer in the band.

Jordan Rudess - No Idea - i don't follow keyboardists. Just get Derek back.

John Myung - Billy Sheehan or Vic Wooten or Les Claypool etc

John Petrucci - Paul Gilbert. NOT VAI OR SATCH.

James LaBrie - Russel Allen or Corey Taylor to mix it up a bit

See I thought Claypool, but his style is just so damn different I'm not so sure.. that's why I brought up Vic. If Petrucci left I can't imagine the band would go on under the DT moniker either let alone I don't think JMX would continue to play without JP.

Whether or not he makes it back in, I hope the band posts MP's audition footage.

I agree with Les, I think Vai would probably step in for Petrucci as they might have some prior relationship like Mangini did. Rudess... I duno, that's a very tough one.. there arn't many other keyboardists out there of that caliber. I think Derek Sherinian would prob be the guy again. If Mangini left? Probably Portnoy would jump right back in.. but dam wouldn't be cool to see Rod Morgenstein jump in for a tour or two?

I really dig Minnemann, and I think he can play everything and more.... I just didn't think he was a good fit (granted this was based on a few minutes of edited video meant to bolster the choice already made).

Cedar redaC

Drums- Justin Bieber
Guitar- Lil Wayne
Keyboards- Lady Gaga
Bass- Triggered sample
Vocals- T-Pain, plus all of the above.

TheSilentHam

Wow Cedar... That's horrifying yet amusing at the same time.

Cedar redaC

Don't tell me that you aren't the least bit curious. I mean, imagine T-Pain singing Octavarium.

JLB's replacements would have to be Neal Morse or Chris Cornell to be MP

Interesting thread. It has me thinking - even though Portnoy, a founding member, was replaced by Mangini, Dream Theater is not all that different. It's by and large the same sound with really nothing new. Contrast this to Jordan's induction into the band (and James for that matter). Significant alterations in the music there.

I wonder who, if they were to be replaced, would leave the biggest gap to be filled, such that DT would be drastically different after their replacement stepped in. I'm thinking JLB and JP at the moment, perhaps JR.

None, if the current line up breaks I'll be ready for Dream Theater to call it a day and enjoy solo projects from them.

Usually maybe. Remember, he's a professional musician, and I'm sure he could adapt. It's all music, and playing one thing doesn't mean you can't do something different. It's not really that far from fusion to prog metal anyway, DT is just more metal. I'm a bassist myself, and I visit both the DT and Vic Wooten territory regularly when it comes to genres.

Very true, he could adapt if he wanted to but still...i can't see him joining any prog metal act fulltime because were not talking about a studio session here.
