Not sure how much interest there is here, we'll let this die a slow death if not, but I know there's quite a few collectors around here who may want to grab some of the more limited variants, either CD or vinyl. If there's ones that you may have come across or looking for or keep track of? Here's what I have so far..

Boxset
Green Vinyl
Clear Vinyl
Artbook CD
Deep Blue Vinyl
Black Vinyl
CD+BR
Blue/Black Marble Vinyl
Blue/Black Marble with book...(the book may be included in both these?)
Clear Black Marble Vinyl
CD Digipak with booklet
CD

I for one pre-ordered them both. I love vinyl and have every album they ever released on (mostly colored) vinyl. I also have the limited boxsets of Distance Over Time and A View. So pre-ordering the above was an instant-call for me.

It sounds (or CAN sound, more accurately) warmer.  Whether that is better to you or not is a personal preference.

Of course, vinyl disciples may disagree with that assessment.

I have also found that albums that were recorded analog sound better on vinyl to my ears than modern, digitally-recorded albums sound on vinyl.  But I'm not claiming that to be an accross-the-board fact, just my experience.

The old digital vs analog debate-
There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

Here's the deal- most modern albums (including reissues) are basically digital tracks  slapped onto vinyl (ie, there is very little reason to buy them for sound quality). It's the dirty little secret belying the entire current vinyl market. One of the most respected (and expensive) vinyl record company Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs(MSFL)  just had a huge lawsuit after (more or less) claiming their records had no digital processing. Turns out that was false. Most records after the early 1990s are also recorded digitally. When you factor all of that, any advantage of analog over digital is pretty much irrelevant.

The only real advantages to vinyl are the following:
1.   Older records that were recorded analog, -with vintage records, in theory, you're getting the closest "truest" source to the original analog tape vs something that has been digitized
2.   Often greater care is given in the sound quality/mastering of vinyl records as opposed to the CD release. This is not always the case, though.

If you are serious about sound quality – pay attention to the source of where the tracks are coming from. If the vinyl doesn't mention it- it's most likely sourced from digital tracks. Otherwise, go ahead and enjoy vinyl, the collecting, the cool artwork, cool colors, vintage "vibe"- but beware, you're not gaining much in sound quality. Definitely, something to consider before dropping $30-40 on a new record.

Thanks guys! This helpful for me as I'm totally illiterate with this stuff. Now the next question is do you think there is any sonic advantage to the vinyl records DT sells?

Obviously each and every release comes with special editions and near all the upsells are including vinyl. Is the audio on DT vinyl digital?

Barstool, to be honest I've found that the masters on the last couple of DT records don't translate well to vinyl. More distorted and compressed sounding than most other records in my collection.

I'll probably snag a copy in-store on release day, but for as much vinyl as I listen to it's not my preferred way to listen to DT. I do like my pressing of Images and Words, though. I appreciate anything that fits nicely on two sides of vinyl. All killer, no filler.

Honestly to me it's more for collecting, and also the immersive experience it brings. Something about sitting down and listening to a record that makes it special.

Anyway I ordered the box set on both Amazon and Rough trade. Whichever one ships out first I'll keep and cancel the other.

I also have a clear vinyl and cd+blu ray set preordered through Amazon as a backup just in case the box set has a stock issue.
