BTW TDEN is a good song.

Seeing this on the track listing would surely be a sickening monstrous sight.

I love TDEN. Delicious song. Reprise away. Candlelight is a very good name for a DT song, too. Sounds DT. Top notch.

1. The Speed of Light
2. Hidden Heart
3. Earthquake
4. A Force of Nature
5. Trial by Fire (instrumental)
6. Paralyzed
7. The Tomb of the Ancients
8. Into the Unknown

There we go. Something like that. They're Dream Theater, not the Mars Volta - even the long words are generally pretty short. Lately, there's been a bit of fiction, a bit of history, lots of "The X of X," so I've tried to represent all that. Plenty of politics - On the Backs of Angels, Outcry, but seldom with overtly political names. OtBoA is a relatively poetic name for a very mundane subject matter. Sort of tried to mix and match.

We know there's a John Myung song, so that'll probably have an airy-fairy name. Learning to Live, Lifting Shadows off a Dream, Trial of Tears, Breaking All Illusions. Into the Unknown sounds like something he'd write. They occasionally do a thing where they give a heavy song a ballad's title - Just Let Me Breathe, Beyond This Life, etc. Hidden Hearts, here. Probably written by James LaBrie, that crazy pirate.

Heh, I just put it in because the name deals with night. I have listened to the song, though, and I don't get why everyone hates it.

They don't! It's just polarising. Like Scarred. People who hate that stuff can't stand it, the people who love it properly, really love it. We've probably got a couple more from column A, not quite as many from column B, but when people are ranking SC tracks, I'm surprised how often it tends to sit right near the top.

("The Dark Eternal Night is like Scarred" - robwebster, 2013.)

I sincerely hope that DT12 will have an epic of longer than 20 minutes.

We haven't had once since Octavarium (still my favorite epic)

BlobVanDam

I'd like more shorter songs, with just a couple of longer songs, more like Awake or FII in structure. ADTOE was getting back to that more, although it felt like it had too many 10+ minute tracks, and they largely felt redundant to me.
I'd also like to see more regard for interconnected tracks, such as a small suite like AMBI, or tracks flowing into each other like on SFAM, or even Hell's Kitchen/LITS.

Of course they can do the complete opposite and I wouldn't mind. I just want good music. :tup

Just because it's among the best SC songs doesn't mean it's good

:neverusethis:

(seriously though, I have nothing against the song or SC)

tl;dr version: Blob wants the new album to be like Awake.

krands85

I've always preferred their longer songs in general. In fact, I don't have any songs shorter than 7 minutes in my top 30 and only 3 shorter than 8 minutes. Also, only 10 of the 30 are shorter than 10 minutes and that's only if you separate ItPoE into 2 tracks!

In saying that though, I wouldn't want another album with only 6 tracks like BC&SL - there was a lot of stuff on there that could have been trimmed down to make room for another song I think. So I wouldn't want them to write long songs just for the sake of it - whatever comes naturally should be great ;D
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

I'm with him! I'm a little more indifferent to Awake than a lot of posters here, (read: a lot more indifferent - good album, good not great,) but we had an epic per album for a good five years, culminating in BCSL, which was sort of an album of epics and pseudo-epics. I'm more than happy to throw the lever the other way for a bit. Brevity is wit - traditionally, "the soul of," but I cut that for pace. ADToE was a step in that direction, without even pseudo-epics, but there were still a lot of double figures. Just cos I think Awake's a mid-range album doesn't mean every single choice is an average one. I like the eleven-track album, I like the short songs. Cool approach, increasingly rare approach, and I'd like to see them dabble in that sort of niche again.

:lol SomeoneLikeHim's comment was a playful jab at my own "indifferent" opinion towards Awake in case you missed it, but your post expands on my thoughts very nicely.
While I probably like BCASL more than most people here, the fact it's only 6 tracks really hurts it right off the bat, because every track you don't like is much more detrimental than on an album with more tracks, like SFAM. We're talking 1/6 vs 1/12, which is significant. That's double the impact.

A lot of my favourite DT albums are the ones that have more tracks, like SDOIT, SFAM and FII. Not being a prog fan, I guess I tend to gravitate towards the shorter song structures, where the complexity comes from the musicality and songwriting, and not necessarily from the length and structure. And despite my opinion of Awake, one of the things I do like about the album is the variety of shorter songs, some of which I even enjoy more than a lot of people here who prefer the longer, proggier stuff.

Oh, yeah! I was sort of trying to address that with the "Just cos I think Awake's a mid-range album doesn't mean every single choice is an average one" bit. That you don't like Awake, but you think there are things about it worth reproducing... isn't a contradiction.

Like Octavarium as well. You have Sacrificed Sons, which is 10 minutes, and Octavarium, which is 24 minutes. Everything else is 8 minutes or less.

I wouldn't mind an album like Octavarium. (Though people dislike it for its inconsistency.)

I think Octavarium is perfect when it comes to song lengths. And also, I think it's a lot more consistent than ADTOE, or even I&W for example.

Lucien

Anyways, if they don't have an epic in this album, there will most likely be one in the next album, now that Mike#2 would have been nice and settled.

James LaBrie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdqIUz57J0A
"The dynamics in this album are phenomonal" "Mike Mangini brings in a new element into the band throughout the writing process" "Mike's playing is more cohesive because he has been here from the very beginning" "It will prove itself to take Mike and the band to another level" "Fans are in for a real treat" "It's gonna be beautiful."

I think we're going to REALLY like this album.

Kotowboy

I was happy with ADToE but it got boring rather quickly for some reason whereas I can still go back and listen to Octavarium from start to finish No Problem.

I think the nice airy sound of Octavarium helps and ADToE is a bit muddy and boxy mix wise.

If they marry these "phenomenal " new songs with great airy production ( and more up-front drums ) then we could have a DT classic.

Will that edition also include Prophets of Dance, Gangnam Wither and an extended version of the roar in ANTR?
