I find it very inconsistent. The highs (Octavarium, TROAE, These Walls) are very high, but the lows (I Walk Beside You, Never Enough, The Answer Lies Within) to be some of the lowest of DT's discography.

I always considered The Answer Lies Within to be one of the highs of the album. But then, I think Octavarium is a pretty awesome album, at least in terms of being extremely well rounded for people who like heavy stuff, ballads, progressive stuff, etc. I think there's something on 8V to please every type of DT fan. But I do think that The Answer Lies Within is one of its better songs, at least for having that wonderful Piano melody. One of a handful of DT's best piano melodies since KM left the band.

This is just how I feel about 8vm. I don't think it deserves the hate it tends to get; I think it might be up there under Images and Scenes.

tier 1 (unchanging): Images and Words, Awake, Falling into Infinity, Train of Thought
tier 2: ADTOE, Six Degrees, BC&SL
tier 3: SC, Octavarium, WDADU, SFAM

for some reason I don't like SFAM now.. I used to be obsessed with it, first DT album I got, but now I think it's too technical and atonal to like. I especially hate the constant cheesy dark... least favorite tracks beyond this life and finally free, the rest are still listenable. Overture 1928 still orgasmic, though.

54_diplomats

Well I've finally listened to every album. I posted a few weeks ago about my thoughts on the last album I listened to (SFAM) and I think it's finally time to rank them all.

1. Awake
2. Images and Words
3. Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

5. Octavarium
6. Falling Into Infinity
7. Train of Thought
8. A Dramatic turn of Events
9. When Dream and Day Unite
10. Systematic Chaos
11. Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Lark the Starless

I'm pretty sure I've made this list a couple of times before but I think I can safely say this is my "somewhat definitive" list.  ;D

I don't have WDADU yet and until then (and when DT12 comes out), I'll probably have another revised list.

1. Awake (5 stars for sure; DT at their most cohesive with every song having something memorable; perfect album)
2. SFAM (4.5 stars; very strong album and one of their most consistent)
3. I&W (4-4.5 stars; classic DT and while this one was once #1 on my list, it still manages to kick ass every time I listen to it)

4. FIF (3.5-4 stars; probably high on the list compared to others...this one has grown on me quite a lot)
5. ADTOE (3-3.5 stars; pleasantly surprised when it came out and definitely looking forward to what MM will be bringing to DT12)
6. 6DOIT (3-3.5 stars; the title track is easily top 10 material for me whereas disc 1 is somewhat hit or miss)

7. ToT (2.5-3 stars; my first DT album! When I first listened to it, I thought it was amazing but now having heard the rest of their albums, this one ranks slightly lower but still a great listen)
8. SC (2.5-3 stars; while no one song stands out, the whole album is generally great to listen to on a car ride headbanging  :metal)
9. 8VM (2-2.5 stars; I find this album really demanding to listen to in one sitting; the title track is PHNOMENAL though; top 10 song)
10. BC&SL (2-2.5 stars; least favorite album that still has great moments but lacking in consistency. I still listen to it from time to time.)

5. Awake
6. A Dramatic Turn of Events
7. Systematic Chaos

Holy shit....just combing through some of the rankings, and can't help but notice...

Since when did 6DoIT get so popular?? I absolutely love the album, but I thought I was alone! Last time I checked, it seems as if Six Degrees was more or less thought to be about average for a DT album.

That's great to hear! Anyway, here is my ranking:

1. Scenes From A Memory: My favorite piece of music ever created. Most likely will never change.

2. A Dramatic Turn Of Events: Not a single skip song for me. Such a rarity in music!

3. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence: A double CD that only contains a single song that I do not frequently listen to: Blind Faith. And even so, I still like the song.

4. Images And Words: Metropolis was the first DT song I've ever heard. Never in a million years did I think, at that time, that DT would go on to become my favorites ever.

5. Tie: Octavarium & Train Of Thought:

Octavarium: In creating this list, I initially thought this album would be a bit higher, but after looking it over, I think it fits well at 5. Still love the title track, and believe it or not, Sacrificed Sons has proven to have a ton of replay value. Not too huge a fan of Never Enough or I Walk Beside You, but good songs nonetheless.

Train Of Thought: Before DT, I grew up on metal. Older Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, etc. So I have a higher affinity to harder stuff. That said, I love ToT. My least favorite song on the album is probably This Dying Soul, but when it comes to DT, "least favorite" has absolutely no relation to "not good" as it is still a kick-ass song.

6. Awake: I honestly think that if I was into prog when this album came out, it would be sitting at the #2 spot right now. I just had to put it in this location because there are about 4 or 5 songs that I don't listen to very often:. 6:00, Caught In A Web, Innocence Faded, and Lifting Shadows Off A Dream are all good songs, but personally I was never really able to get into them too much. However, the good songs more than make up for any songs I do not enjoy as much. Voices is simply amazing, and has my favorite JP solo ever in it. And Space Dye Vest is probably my favorite of DT's slower-tempo songs.

7. Systematic Chaos: To be totally honest, before I actually sat down and did this list, I was always under the impression that SC was one of my top 4-5 DT albums. The Ministry Of Lost Souls is definitely in my top 10 DT songs of all time, possibly even top 5. It's timeless to me. And Repentance and Prophets of War are 2 dark horses which always seem to get a lot of criticism, but they are among my favorites on the album. Come to think of it, I like every song on this album. I guess the reason it is #7 is because, although I can listen to it from front to back, none of the songs (other than Ministry) are something that I would consider to be DT's best work. In any case, IMO an extremely underrated album.

8. Black Clouds And Silver Linings: If this album could make just 2 changes, I think it would reside in my top 5. The first is the lyrics on "The Best Of Times." The song instrumentation, melodies, solos, etc. in the song are amazing. But IMO some of the lyrics in this song are just cringe-worthy. It almost sounds like an elementary school kid wrote them. The concept is good, and I am sorry about Mike's father, but I just wish that the lyrics were constructed better. The second thing that would make this album better would be the replacement of The Dark Fortress with something better to tie up the 12-Step Suite. It's not bad, but if it were replaced with a great song, this album would be incredible.

9. Falling Into Infinity: I really do believe that one day, I will finally be able to appreciate this album. So far, not so good. I never listen to New Millenium, You Not Me, Burning My Soul, Take Away My Pain, Trial of Tears, or Just Let Me Breathe. It is unheard of for a DT album to have 6 songs which I am not into. Still though, the album has its strong points. Peruvian Skies is timeless to me, and contains some of the most awesome guitar riffs I've ever heard. And the album features two of the band's greatest ballad/slow tempo tracks: Hollow Years and Anna Lee. Lines In The Sand is awesome as well. Overall, a great album but one of DT's weakest to me.

10. When Dream And Day Unite: Let me first say that we should all be bowing down to this album, not for its contents, but for its concept. I don't really listen to it, aside from a few songs here and there, but I respect that it helped set the tone for the greatest band ever!

Thanks for reading!

Haha, you're right...I actually do listen to a lot of crap music. I guess I can hang on to any semblance of good taste as long as DT continues to be my fav band. (going on around 10 years now...doesn't look like its ever going to be anything else but DT :heart)

As for FIF, man I've been trying for years to start to enjoy the songs that I don't care for on that album, and I think at some point in my life I will learn to love them!

And as for what I said about WDADU, I just meant that we should all be happy that this album came out, regardless of whether or not we are into it. Just for the concept that it was the debut album of our fav band, from which all other masterpieces derived from.
