Who's the better back vocalist?

MP
JP

Progmetty

Definitely JP, especially his high stuff! Voices, Silent Man, As I Am pre-chorus! I miss this stuff.

Rattlehead

I wonder what the results would look like if Portnoy had never left the band  :lol I definitely like both of them but I would have to go with MP, both of them clearly have their strengths and some rather blatant weaknesses if you ask me, but I think MP was more consistent throughout his career with DT.

It's a good thing MP is finally winning the poll (as he should be).

How can you prepare for what would happen next?

I seriously cannot believe Petrucci is winning this poll.  I'm not the biggest Portnoy fan either but Jesus, these results are just insulting.

Predictableee.

AngelBack

I'm not sure bears even have a falsetto.

OsMosis2259

I wasn't expecting these results at all. MP is much more superior as a BACK vocalist in my opinion.

How so?  Neither guy does anything worth talking about from a backup vocalist standpoint, but I am guessing that Petrucci is getting a lot of votes because he has never done anything as bad as Portnoy's worst backup vocals (or leads, which most consider part of the equation, like the A Nightmare to Remember section).

I didn't even consider Portnoy's leads, I just don't think he's got a very good singing voice, and it really doesn't sound that good when doing harmonies for LaBrie. Petrucci may not have done that much backup singing, but what he has done sounded great on stuff like Metropolis2000.

JP has inferior pitch but superior timbre.  Normally, I'd say that favors the other guy, but here I have to say the difference in timbre is significant enough to make up for JP's frequently poor pitch.

But it's not like he can't carry a tune. And we don't need a backup vocalist with a huge range. I mean, LaBrie does the high vocals, so we only need mid-range harmonies to complement that.
