TAC

Thanks for the duck, Bosk. I appreciate that.

See what I did there?

Also want to say that TCOT is musically stellar. And I mean stellar. The lyrics are fun and campy. They don't turn me off in any way.

I guess it will take at least 8 years for me. It's probably one of the DT songs I've been listening to the least. Haven't heard it in a couple of years I think. It just doesn't work for me, and not because of the lyrics (I don't listen to lyrics). This one and A Change Of Seasons just don't seem to be my kind of tunes.

I'll never understand this.

And I will never understand any kind of poetry. I can understand mathematics and logical patterns, but stories that aren't straight forward just fly over my head. My brain just doesn't work that way. I can sit down and read song lyrics, and be none the wiser when I'm done. While I understand the words and individual sentences I just don't seem to be able to put it all together. I have no problem with modern books and similar ways of telling stories though.

I love this piece, lyrics and all.

The lyrics are great because they express raw human emotion - specifically, fear - in a very direct way. It's very clear what the song is about and therefore easy(ish) to relate to. Sure, they're not poetic like most JP's other lyrics, but to this day I have no clue what most of them are about.

I'm the same. Unless lyrics are howlingly awful or exceptionally good - they're just sort of *there* for me. I never studied English and so lyrics that are full of metaphor and clever writing just don't do anything.

We're on the same page, dude. :hifive:

Personal taste apparently is not accounted for in this section of DTF. :getoffmylawn:

I dunno. I know the lyrics are cheesy, but I have a euphoric experience when I hear "Now wait a minute mann......"  and then "tell them about me , the count of tuscanyyyyy"

Absolutely beautiful.

I still love this song immensely. I really liked it when the album first came out, and it took a few months to cement itself as one of my favourite songs the band has done, but it's stayed in that position.

Regarding the lyrics, yeah they are pretty literal, and maybe slightly overly so for my tastes, but then I also don't tend to love lyrics that are so metaphorical as to be impenetrable unless they're done in a really clever or interesting way. But it's not a strong preference really, so I don't mind the lyrics.

Have to say though, the lyrics are definitely meant to be that way, so it's only my own tastes getting in the way. The story is meant to be anecdotal, laughing at yourself for using assumptions and pre-judgements to scare yourself when actually everything is really normal. And I think the song does a really job at that.

The lyrics aren't for everyone, and I totally understand why someone would quite strongly dislike them. But anyone who is "bothered" or "embarrassed" by them really needs to get some perspective.

Yeah, the lyrics are a little cheesy. But,the music is awesome!Maybe it should have been left as an instrumental.

I totally relate to this. I personally don't like lyrics which are overly literal (for the most part, at least), but I also don't like it when lyrics are, as you put perfectly, "impenetrable", due sometimes to the songwriter's choice to remain overly mysterious.

This is one reason that I love Steven Wilson. With many of his songs, I really need to think about the lyrics. But he writes them in a way that makes me want to think about them. And because most of his projects have a strong concept theme, you can usually infer the meaning of the song as it relates to the theme of the album.

But with some bands, the lyrics are just impossible to figure out. Kurt Cobain comes to mind. I don't know if his lyrics were literally just nonsense, or if they were genius. I've heard cases for both. But either way, many of his lyrics are just too "out there" to make any confident conclusions about.

I don't dislike Kurt...i actually used to love Nirvana and I still will listen to them once a year or so. I just prefer songwriters who use a good balance between being only somewhat mysterious but not too literal.

hefdaddy42

I don't care that they are literal.  Regardless of whether or not they are literal, they are cheesily-constructed and cliche-ridden.  I literally cannot keep a straight face when reading or singing them.  I either laugh or grimace.  Or both.

It's fun as hell to sing along to. Why would you try to keep a straight face?
