These are my favorite two songs off of my favorite album.. but I cannot decide which I like better.  One second I'm leaning towards one, next thing I know I'm back to the other.  So I'm curious, which song do you like better and why?

SomeoneLikeHim

I feel basically the exact same as you do. But at this moment, Metropolis is on top.

54_diplomats

Those are my top 2 off I&W as well. Learning to Live is probably my second favorite DT song while Metropolis is in my top 10, but not quite as high as LTL. I love everything about both songs, but what really pushes LTL beyond Metropolis for me is the last 3 minutes of the song. After that guitar solo with that slight pause, the Wait for Sleep reprise starts up and everything from that point onward is just too amazing for me to describe in words. JLB sings that final chorus with so much power and emotion. I think I'm going to listen to LTL now.

Unlegit

Metropolis is my number one and Learning to Live is my number three.

Fourth Horseman

Something about Wait For Sleep into LTL makes LTL a little better for me, but it goes back and forth.

Easy choice for me. Metropolis. Learning To Live is easily my least favourite off IaW, and wouldn't make my top 50.

The correct answer is Learning To Live.

Yes. It's my #1 DT song and a Top 10 song overall.

Ruba

I don't want to decide, both are awesome.

Mladen

Metropolis is my number one Dream Theater song, although Learning to live is in the top 10 as well.

Sketchy

I'm not quite sure. I used to like Metropolis a lot more, but there are some really amazing bits of LtL which are beginning to steal the prize.

Scorpion

Metropolis. LtL is great, but Metropolis has everything: great riffs, great vocals, a nice instrumental section (with a bass solo!) and the "after the leaves have fallen" part is one of my favourite musical moments ever.

Exept that there is no "after the leaves have fallen" line in the song  :lol

As for the question, easily LTL. Between the two songs there's the same difference than the one between a 1 and a 2.

Derp. :lolpalm: I mean "before the leaves have fallen".

Before we lock

the dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooor

(actually, yeah, that bit is pretty killer)

?

Both songs are up there among my favorite DT songs but LTL is better IMO.

Nekov

LTL no doubt. Metropolis is a fantastic tune though. Both top 10 in my opinion

krands85

My 2 favourite songs ever. For a while, Metropolis was the only song I really liked on I&W - then I realised how good the rest of the album was as well, especially LtL.

There are occasional periods (like right now) where I love LtL that little bit more and listen to it more often. But generally, Metropolis comes out on top for me.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

erik16

Learning to Live took longer to grow on me but when it did, it grew over my head and overwhelmed me, forcing Metropolis to relocate.

Marion Crane

Metropolis easily for me.  LTL is a fantastic tune, but not a top 10 DT song for me

ApparatusUnearth

Metropolis definitely because of the instrumental section.

MrBoom_shack-a-lack

LTL is just a perfect DT song IMO. JMX lyrics are cool, that tasty JP solo after JLBs "reach for the stars" note, awesome melodies especially the ending part mixed with very very tasteful prog parts and on top of that: JLB sings his ass off.....which future JLB hates! I just love that tune!  :heart

Impossible not to headbang to this part. One of my favourite DT moments.

I'm still thinking about my vote. It's really hard to compare these songs because they both sort of bring different things to the table and depending on my mood I'll listen to one over the other.

11:30 of awesome? or 9:30 of awesome?

Learning to live wins... by a full two minutes

Dublagent66

LTL easily.  Flows better musically and lyrically, C# and the best outro in DT history.  Need I say more?   :hefdaddy

Can we get a "Both" or Depends on my Mood" option please? If you genuinely enjoy both of these songs, then I think you should leave it at that. Why arrange these songs in your mind which is better and which is behind based on the personal views of someone else? What if one day you can connect with metropolis more so than learning to live? And other day it's the opposite? Music for me really depends on my mood and disposition. Somedays, I'm not interested in listening to either of them as I'm out enjoying other music. I wouldn't let a handful of people on some forum determine which is a better song for you.  :lol to me, that would defeat the major purpose behind music in the first place.

Polls like this for me are only interesting because I might like to see how other people feel about something that I might not feel. But I don't think I'd let it affect me and change my view on the music. The only time I might let it change the way I feel is if the statement came from the creator of the music, or if I didn't understand what the statement of the music was about and someone clarified it for me.

Both great songs IMO.

2 of their top 3 best. It's a difficult decision, but I'd have to go with Metropolis.

Learning to Live, the ending gives me chills, EVERY TIME.

Metropolis very close, but nothing beats that ending to LtL.

Why?  It's a choice between two.  You can't pick one?

See, it's this easy.

I picked Learning To Live.  Although I have Metropolis also in my Top 3, so it is also incredible.

Why? I pretty much already answered that in my statement above!  ;D

I don't think or quantify things like most people do. Because just like top 40 charts, things like this always changes for people, so it's pretty much pointless for me. I also don't have a favorite color or a favorite food. Everything has its place for me depending on my mood.

Correct; ah those harmonics.
