I don't think there is anything even remotely "Cohesive" about the song "Octavarium"  It's one of Dream Theater's more patched-together chucks of ideas kind of songs....it's not bad, per se, although that intro is about 5x longer than it needs to be, but I don't think it's anywhere near as cohesive as "A Change of Seasons"

Barry, I only noticed now that your avatar actually moves. That is one stealthy motherfucker. :lol

never listened to the whole six degrees. i only listen to about to crash and solitary shell

what is wrong with you

?

Six Degrees is ok and has its moments, but as said, it's too clunky and and inconsistent to feel like a real song instead of separate songs tied together with a concept.

I love the song.  Most long song are pieced together and that never bothers me.  maybe it doesn't because of listening to bands like Yes in my youth and they were notorious for piecing together long songs.

I rank SDOIT #1/2. ACOS would be lucky to even make my top 50. Hugely overrated imo.

Nothing shocking about this thread, I never liked the song much either, one of DT's weakest IMO.

IMHO is indeed not a strong one. I'd like to hear Overture played with guitars/bass/drums (and keyboards, of course) instead of the album version. It always sounded really "artificial" to me, to the point I cannot stand it... :-\

I wouldn't call 6DOIT a song. In order to pull a giant epic song off well, you need to make the whole thing sound like a connected, seamlessly-flowing piece where it's hard to tell when there's a change between movements. Octavarium, for example, does this perfectly and 6DOIT utterly fails at it.

I wouldn't say it fails at it, just a different approach.  Overture sets the musical themes and the changes are more abrupt, that's all.  Not all songs need to have seamless movements to be good songs.  Yeah, it actually is a song.

I agree, I have never classed the whole thing as one song.  If you want a long piece that is in fact one song, one looks to 8vm, Dopesmoker, Crimson, Light of Day Day of Darkness, these are longs songs.

I think the fact that pretty much every part could act as, and are very much written as, complete individual songs doesn't do much to classify the collective as a song. It's almost like a mini album or suite more than anything due to the unified concept.

Everyone has their own opinion, but yours makes me sad. Six Degrees is probably my favorite album, tied with Awake at the current moment. I'll probably get a lot of crap for this, but I think it's a much better concept album then SFAM, because the concepts behind it actually have deep meaning, whereas the storyline in SFAM always left me feeling very shaky about their lyrical abilities.

And the music is just so beautiful. I especially love the Overture and Blind Faith, way underrated songs.

You realize we're only talking about the 2nd disc, right?
The first disc is fantastic.

I respectfully disagree. In fact I rarely ever listen to them on their own and always would rather listen to the full song rather than the individual parts. Especially the score version. A lot of the time we just throw that and Octavrium on in a row and just enjoy. The changes may be a little sudden but they are done extremely well which is why it made my number 3 song just barely beating out Octavarium.
