He looks like he's having lots of fun, yes. I just didn't like the sound of the cymbal, too loud, but that's of course because it's not mixed properly.

Great stuff.  I especially liked the hat work and the fill before the short piano solo.

TAC

That was great of him to release this, especially considering that he seemed like he was upset with the DT camp a while back.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

That was really fun to watch.  Top 5 DT song for me. I love Marco's drumming on everything he has done, so it's great to see him play this song.

Also, mad respect to Mike Portnoy

I love Mangini but I kinda feel bad for Marco that it seems possible that his similarities to MP (hyperactive, consummate showmanship, etc.) may have hurt his chances since DT may have been leery of ending up with another scene stealer.

No knock on MM though, that cat has more chops than a Ginsu infomercial and seems like a person anyone could be best friends with. Such a joy to behold his aura.

Nice video, it makes me appreciate MP's drum parts so much...One of his greatest contributions in DT's history i believe.
Marco makes it seem so easy...Amazing drummer :metal

Seeing him playing Jackhammer on that DVD is what made me a fan of his  :)

Never thought I'd hear those drum parts groove like that. :hat

Very nice.

i would've loved MM in DT, but i dont think he would ever give up his free agent status to fully commit to DT. I mean the guy used to tour with necrophagist one year, paul gilbert the next...

I've seen it said so often about Marco and I've got to agree; he plays with so much joy. The man's a phenomenal drummer.

Still my top choice for the job. Mangini was the safer choice, but personally I would have enjoyed a dramatically new element being brought into DT, because that's when they seem to produce their best stuff. (JLB => IAW, DS => FIi, JR => SFAM)

I love Marco Minnemann, he is by the way german like me,
but,
Mike Mangini was the right choice,
he is commited like Minnemann never would have been,
he is a team player(very necessary improvement),
he would have never spelled DT wrong!!
Marco would have always been more of a hired gun!

Minnemann is a great drummer   :metal,
but Mangini was the perfect fit :tup :hefdaddy :heart

Errr. How about JR => SDOIT ?

That wasn't JR's first album with DT.

I would say that the band's 2nd release with a new member is pretty top notch: JLB with Awake, DS with FII, and JR with SDOIT. They had time to write new material with the new member contributing.

IIRC, and correct me if I'm wrong (which I might be), but wasn't some or much of IAW written before JLB joined the band, and during the vocalist audition process? And with SFAM, much of the material from the demoed epic was written with DS in the band, where many of those themes and motifs would later be expanded upon from the transition from epic to album.

I think DT12 will follow along the lines of Awake, FII and SDOIT in terms of (fully) letting the newest member contribute.

The only songs that were written from scratch after JLB joined the band were Another Day, Surrounded, Pull Me Under and likely Wait For Sleep. Everything else already existed, in some form.

kind of reinforces how happy I am with Mangini

Thought so, so great songs like "Don't Look Past Me", "Under A Glass Moon", "Take The Time", "Metropolis" and "Learning To Live" were done before JLB joined the band. Also, so was "A Change Of Seasons", which would later be recorded on DS's first release, A Change Of Seasons.

While it was possible SOMETHING might have been different, I think most of the writing would have remained the same, regardless of which drummer they chose, simply because it's what the rest of the band wanted to do/write/record/release, so the  instances Rumborak cites for JLB and JR don't really ring true with the idea of a new member helping the band produce their best stuff. Sure IAW and SFAM are great albums, but JLB and JR didn't have as much input on those albums as they would in the ones that followed them.

by this, I mean that Mangini seems to fit better in DT. I think Mangini doesn't mind taking a backseat when necessary. Not that Marco wouldn't, but his personality screams that he wouldn't. And there isn't anything wrong with that. I just think Mangini's personality is conveyed through the way he drums.

RoeDent

That was stunning! I love watching him play! He looks like he's having a ball. So glad he's with the Steven Wilson band.

YtseCullen

Kind of a random tidbit of info but reading the comments on the video on Marco's Facebook page, he said that he got asked to do Petrucci's album and the G3 tour and turned it down, is this something new or has this been brought to light previously?

slycordinator

It was posted on here months ago but I think it was copied from facebook.

Quote from: Marco MinnemannI got asked to join John Petrucci on the G3 tour in October. Unfortunately I can't realize this plan (and long time promise to the fans) due to commitments with my band Aristocrats in that timeframe. And since John pointed out that he only wants to have me for the CD, if I join G3 as well, I most probably won't record his CD either. Oh well.....

NIIIIIICE!

It was interesting seeing it played with double strokes instead of singles in places. I love his ghost notes.
