Hi guys, for those interested here's my first video here of a Dream Theater synth solo played on guitar, hope you'll like it!

Holy crap! I've seen plenty of DT covers, but not playing the synth solo on a guitar. I'm not sure if it was your two handed playing technique, your guitar tone, or both, but it really had the synthy sound too.

Minor critique - you were slightly ahead of the beat on the second lead part tapping. But I'm nitpicking. :tup Very cool.

edit: oh, and I really want to hear you play the 6/8 synth solo from Beyond This Life!

MondayMorningLunatic

Dude, that's fucking sick. A few questions if you don't mind me asking:

What's that thing under your second fret?
What do you use to get that tone?
What's your setup like in terms of action and string gauge?

the thing under second fret should be muting the string

Thanks a bunch guys ;)

Yes the thing under the second fret is a string damper, it's called Buzznut, I usually use a Batten damper but lost a screw of it so had to use this one, works pretty cool too :)

Will check 6/8 from Beyond this life, not sure, yet as this takes a lot of time, but i'll check it out ;)

The tone really comes from :

- guitar N4 wallnut from Washburn (really very cool guitar)
- HD500 Line 6 for the amp and effects + some additional EQ (mid boost) and Dynamics on mix
- lots of work on the vibrato to emulate that synth playing

Thanks again for checking it out and kind words,

cheers,

Hans

Thanks ;)

@ MondayMorningLunatic, forgot to add, I use 009 - 042 strings (GHS) and a not too low action so to have some more attack on notes.

Hans

Nice!  Reminiscent of Jeff Watson's technique, although this is a far more challenging example than most most of the stuff he played.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Thanks hefdaddy42, yes, Jeff Watson has some great chops, nice guitar player!
