QuoteNew York. 10 August, 2012 - Legendary progressive rock band, Dream Theater, selects Over the Edge Productions to produce their upcoming concert event and Mike Leonard to be the director.

Dream Theater announces they will be filming a concert DVD for their latest world tour in support of "A Dramatic Turn of Events," on August 19th and 20th at Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"We are thrilled to be working with Dream Theater again, especially on such a monumental project. Dream Theater is a legend in the music world, and they're all really amazing guys," says Leonard, founder of Over the Edge Productions (OTE), a New York-based production company specializing in entertainment television.

Last year, OTE produced a documentary for Dream Theater entitled The Spirit Carries On, which was released on DVD with their album and chronicles the journey they took to find their new drummer, Mike Mangini.

The Concert DVD will showcase the best of this two-night live event filmed with up to 10 cameras and ultimately released on BluRay disc. Bonus features will also include documentary segments with the band as a follow up to The Spirit Carries On movie.

"We have had such an incredible time performing all across the globe over the past year and it has been an amazing and event filled tour. We are really excited about ending things up in South America and the two-night concert and DVD shoot in Argentina is sure to be an amazing evening! Better yet is to be working with Mike Leonard and everyone at [Over the Edge Productions] once again. Our experience with Mike and crew on "The Spirit Carries On" documentary was nothing short of spectacular and we know that they will deliver our best work to date. Between the show, documentary and interview footage, we are confident that Mike will not only deliver an epic concert video, but that he will capture the real essence of [Dream Theater's] South American experience to be enjoyed by our fans all around the world," says John Petrucci.

The Dream Theater concert event will take place in Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The former amusement park, located in the heart of Buenos Aires near the district of Puerto Madero, has been known to host countless musical performances and sporting events for over the past eighty years. The historic venue is representative of the immense culture found within the country of Argentina.

"Bonus features will also include documentary segments with the band as a follow up to The Spirit Carries On movie."

Also states that the DVD will be of "the best of" the two nights.

I love that they're shooting this in South America.  The DT fans down there are fucking loud.  They'll get a huge energy boost in the final product.

Agreed 100%.

And four out of the six official DVDs were shot in the same towns/areas (Tokyo, NYC). Any change of region is welcomed for a comprehensive one city project.

Disagree 100%.

As long as the crowd doesn't overpower the band who I actually want to hear I'm ok with it.

This. I want to be able to hear the band.

And to the people expecting the DVD to have both nights on it, that would be over 5 hours worth of material and there is no way they could fit all that and the bonus features on a single DVD or blu-ray disc. It shouldn't have surprised anyone that only one night of concert footage plus a bonus feature of some kind would have ended up on the final DVD product.

Why sad panda on the 10 cameras?  That's a very good thing.

There could have been 20! Joking, of course, it's great indeed! The sad panda is referred to the "best of the two nights" bit. I was one of the few to actually believe that both nights would have been completely released.. Hence the sadness.

Keep in mind that although we won't be getting the entire 2 shows on the DVD, the recent announcement that the South American shows are basically in "Evening With" format offsets this somewhat.

The continuity issue is not resolved, though. Anyway, as long as it's 3h or more worth of material, I'll call myself a satisfied fan.  :)

I can't wait to get my hands on the blu ray

Thanks, Joe.  You beat me to it.  I edited your post to include the full text.

Now that that has been released, as if you weren't excited enough, I can share a small snippet of something John Petrucci told me last week as well:

Quote from: John PetrucciWe will release it on Blu Ray and there are so many goodies that we'd like to include to make it fun for our fans. We may have to make some tough decisions! . . . We are actually developing something unbelievably cool for this release. You will flip!

Hope that keeps y'all stoked.  I can definitely say that John and the guys are committed to continuing in the tradition of trying to think of what the fans want as opposed to just releasing a basic concert DVD.

But of course this makes me giddy in wondering if then they will change up some of the songs, so that two 3-hour shows can become one 4-hour DVD/BD experience.

No reason why this can't be a 2 BluRay disc set... Standard & Ultimate collectors edition?

Why would you possibly want two identical versions of songs that make up 75% of the setlists?  Even if it were possible to put both entire shows on one disc and also all of the extras would you really watch Show 1 one day then Show 2 the next?

Yeah, this.  Plus, again, go back to my earlier post.  JP said there is more potential bonus material than they have space for.  I'd rather have space for more bonus content than have songs duplicated.  What they are doing makes perfect sense.

This. Couldn't agree more. I'm really excited for the potential 'goodies' that they guys are preparing for the tour. I'm also really excited that they are keeping up the tradition that Portnoy did by also doing a lot of 'goodies' for the other DVD releases.

...and now knowing that the band has said (1) they are going to have to make some tough decisions about what to include and what not to include, and (2) they care what the fans want:  If only there were a thread with a poll where people could express their opinions about what they would like to see on this project.  :justjen  If only...

I wish it was one show rather than a compilation of two, but as long as it doesn't sound like Chaos In Motion, I'll be happy.

I hear they are going to be super experimental and get the audio from the show from one lucky fans cell phone recording. Should be super prog.

You can definitely tell Mike Portnoy was the producer / director on Chaos In Motion because it sounds like Ass & Balls.
