Did DT ever perform live without a keyboardist?

Hi, I was wondering whether DT ever performed live without a keyboardist, just playing the keyboard tracks from a tape. I thought I saw a video on youtube somewhere but I might just be imagining it.

Setlist Scotty

Unless there's footage of JP, JM and MP at Berklee online, you're just imagining it.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Maybe there was footage of the live LTE show where Jordan's keyboard broke.

SystematicThought

Some Ronnie Scott songs didn't have keyboard I think. It's mentioned in a commentary I think. Like the one Barney sings on. And the jams on the I&W tour didn't feature Kevin sometimes

It was older than that, I think it was back during the FII tour.

SystematicThought

Like I said, the Ronnie Scott show maybe. Some songs didn't feature keys

SnakeEyes

I thought there were some shows between Kevin and Derek that didn't have a keyboard player....

Yeah, but that's LTE, not DT.

I recall reading one of Portnoy's setlists noting that "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun" was played live during the Waking Up The World tour without keys because Derek didn't bother to learn to play it.

Both quotes above are correct. However, there were never any shows where the band was completely without a keyboardist. And there never was a situation where they played to a pre-recorded keyboard track because they didn't have a keyboardist there live (which is what the OP was asking).

Nope. They did the Concrete Foundations show 9/9/94 with Jordan, which was after KevMo left and before Derek joined, but that's the only show.

This is correct.  DT intended to play it with Derek live, but it didn't happen.

The only other occasion I can think of is the live radio broadcast that featured Long Island Expressway, Another Day and a couple other songs with no keys.  I believe these are featured on the Antiquities bootleg.  It was an accoustic set with guitars, bass, vocals and shakers n bongos - everything but keys.

You're right:
QuoteDerek does not play keyboards on The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun since it was low on his priority list of songs to learn, though original plans were for him to learn it later.
Here's a video of a keyboard-less performance of TOWHTSTS.

Cool, never saw that video before.  Thanks for sharing.  There is a bootleg of this entire show called "A Kick Into A Dream" with higher quality sound.  Contrary to the YouTube comments in the above link, Derek indeed plays on all the other tunes (highlight being the Mists of Evening jam in Take the Time).

It's not that Derek didn't bother to learn to play it...he just didn't Taaaaake the Tiiiime.

But no, seriously, he didn't have time to learn it.

Indeed, but we like to think that the band cared so little for the song that they completely forgot to tell him it was to be played.  :lol

Can you imagine the conversation?

MP: Oh crap, we forgot to mention it to you
DS: Thats all right, I learn it as soon as you guys get me a copy.
MP: It's off of our first album
DS: But...I already learned all the songs from Images and Words
MP: No, the one before that...
DS:....?

Yeah and you can clearly see the keyboard stand a few times in the video - why would they bring a keyboard with them if they didn't have a keyboardist?

This was the only thing that came to mind for me.
