SDOIT. And I totally expected it to win by a longshot. It's my second favourite behind ADTOE, so if this was a 2000-2011 poll, that would've one. Although it's not too far behind. TOT and 8V are among my top 5 too, though.

Jarzombek

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, no doubt about that

Zydar

Six Degrees, mainly for the title track.

SDOIT no contest.  Yeah, there's a lot of material to absorb and I'll admit that I didn't like it that much at first, but it became my all time favorite DT album.  Some say that Octavarium best represents what DT is all about.  Even JP said that in a interview, but I think SDOIT does a better job of that from an overall perspective.

He did, but that was right after Octavarium had came out, and JP was in "Our newest album is our best album" mode*, which I've heard a million times from musicians.

*He said that OV was their most well-rounded and best CD in the interview.

It is always best to not take a musician's opinion of his latest work too seriously.  I mean, back in 2004, Alex Lifeson thought that Vapor Trails (Rush's most recent album at that time) was their best album! :eek :eek :eek :rollin :rollin :rollin That says it all.
.

Vapor Trails is fucking awful. I honestly regret buying that album. There's only like 4 songs on there that I actually enjoy.

Anyways, the first DT album I ever purchased when I was first getting into the band was Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Dont make that mistake. It's a truely great album, but I suggest starting with Six Degrees  or Octavarium

Ryzee

I'd go with Six Degrees too like pretty much everyone else said, but I don't dislike Black Clouds as much as most people do.  I'd say it's their second best from that time period.

Six degrees

Systematic chaos and Black clouds and silver linings are almost just as great, though.
I like this post a lot.

SDOIT's first CD is fucking amazing. The Title track and second CD is good, but meh. SDOIT on the merits of the first half.

I know I'm in the minority but I love BC&SL

Black Clouds and Silver Linings is a fantastic album.

Thanks everyone, by the look of the poll and everyone's responses, I'll start looking for Six Degrees.

P.S. I did buy ADTOE, It was my first Dream Theater CD!! Still probably my favorite.

That'll quickly change once you hear SDOIT. I'd have a change of pants nearby before I start listening to TGP though.

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, of course. Any other choice is just silly.

I will say however, that I just recently listened to Systematic Chaos and Train Of Thought back to back, and both albums were a lot better than I remembered. The Ministry Of Lost Souls is still a major weak point, but I honestly enjoyed everything else.

That's a pretty good point actually. All those people who condemn Systematic Chaos and keep talking about how much it sucks, I really wonder when they last listened to it. I always talk about how I'm not a fan of The Great Debate or certain aspects of Space-Dye Vest, but I listen to them regularly, so my opinion is regularly reaffirmed.

A couple days ago, actually. And it was as bad as I remembered. I don't need to listen to something regularly to be sure that I don't like it.

Octavarium's never really grown on me, as many times as I've listened to it. Not a bad album, to be sure, but there's just so few truly high points. Even my favorite track (Sacrificed Sons) is a great song in its own right, but it does reuse several beats that have been done even more effectively many times before. This trait certainly isn't a deal breaker (See: my continuing love for their most recent album), but it doesn't really help make the song stand apart either.

The rest of the album is OK. No real clunkers.

The logical answer is SDOIT. With that being said, if you don't have Scenes, Awake, or I&W, all three of those should take priority over anything released from 00-10. I'm assuming that you do have them, or you would have included them in the poll, but just in case...

I do have Images and Awake, but Scenes is definitely on my list of albums to acquire soon.

6DOIT By far, 3rd best album by them IMO

That is flawed thinking.  Considering anyone who posts here is likely a fanatical DT/music fan, you have to assume that most of us have listened to their albums enough to be able to say how much we like them or not.  And I don't need to relisten to SC often to remind myself that it isn't great at all.  Suggesting otherwise is silly.

RuRoRul

Train Of Thought.

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence is a tempting option though, I can understand why it's by far the most popular.

And I love all of these albums. They were the first five DT albums I heard actually.

I listened to it recently and liked it less than I used to.

SFAM>SDOIT, in my opinion.

Although you really can't go wrong with either.

People's opinions change overtime. As much as you might want your opinion to stay constant, it's very possible that you'll have a new perspective on things you haven't heard in a while. Denying the possibility of that is silly.

DarkLord_Lalinc

Six Degrees. Also happens to be my fave DT record.

Okay, but that's not the same thing you were talking about earlier.  You made it seem like you have to listen to something on a regular basis to keep proving to yourself that something isn't that good.  Besides, I usually do listen to even my least favorite stuff by most of my favorite bands every so often, sometimes by accident (like a while back when I wanted to hear ITPOE Part I, and before I knew it, I had listened to all of SC), sometimes by intent.

As for that "accidental" listen to of SC, yes, it was reminder that while it still isn't that great, and definitely one of the band's least best efforts, it is still not a bad album by any means (despite having several songs I can certainly do without); it's just not as good as most of their other stuff.  I get a similar reaction every time I listen to Rush's Presto, PT's Up the Downstair or The Flower Kings' The Rainmaker.

ZKX-2099

Train Of Thought, motherfuckers.

All I said was that I regularly listen to all their stuff including my least favorite stuff, so I'm constantly reaffirmed that I'm not into it. I didn't say everyone had to do the same, I was just saying that I bet a lot of people who condemned certain albums or songs haven't heard them in a long time and might feel differently had they heard them now.
And it certainly wasn't directed specifically at you.

Alright, I got Six Degrees in the mail yesterday, going to give a spin right now.

I envy you.  Listening to SDOIT for the first time is an experience.
