Pretend, hypothetically that John Petrucci, John Myung, James Labrie, Jordan Rudess, and Mike Mangini called you on the phone and said, "Hey, we've got the main concert part of the DVD edited and ready to go, but we're trying to figure out what else to include in the set.  We've got some ideas, but there's only so much disk space, and we can't decide.  Since you're a fan, we'd love to know what you want."

What do you say next?

I've definitely got my own ideas, but I'm curious what other people think.  I know it's been discussed in a few threads, but I don't think we have a detailed poll, so here you go.  If "other," go ahead describe what the other thing is.  Maybe some of you have ideas that haven't really ever been done before.  I'd love to hear what they are.

All of the above?

I know, right?  But if you had to pick the one that you want the MOST, which would it be?

Ben_Jamin

Documentary (of the tour), I enjoy seeing these as it shows how the band prepares for the shows and how they act while on tour, especially the bus rides...I liked it when JR posted them ordering from Wendy's and went in the gas station.

TheGreatPretender

I would really love to see behind the scenes making of the album footage. Did they ever say whether they actually flimed anything like that? Even with a simple camcorder? Probably not, eh?
Any kind of documentary would be nice, as long as it's got the actual band members in it. I was a little disappointed with LFSNY documentary which the band was barely in. Personally, I care more about what the band has to say than about how many microphones were needed for MP's drum kit.

TAC

Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Progmetty

Documentary (tour-related), I want this to be all about the tour.
+ Other: lyrics subtitles option, multiangle on some tracks and a photo gallery.
Wouldn't mind some fancy audio options but would be greedy enough to expect it.

DebraKadabra

Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite

I would love a making of "A Dramatic Turn of Events".

I absolutely adore watching these guys make music.

Progmetty

I would love a making of ADToE as well, just not on the tour DVD, just doesn't seem like the right place to put it.

ResultsMayVary

I really want to see a documentary of the tour! Hopefully along the lines of the Budokan documentary (bits of soundcheck, behind the scenes footage, etc, etc).

Well we may never see it then.  Especially considering the SC documentary was released with the album.

It's a shame....I really love that shit.  :metal

That doesn't mean the chances are zero for the making of ADTOE being released. We could see it as a bonus feature on the DVD or maybe a future Ytsejam release. Just because it wasn't released with the album doesn't mean we'll never see it.

True. That's why I voted for it. Hopefully my vote will be seen and acknowledged by the DT gods watching over this thread.    :hefdaddy

MP seemed the best part.of commentaries, he'll usually spark the conversation.

Actually, it seemed he droned on and on about stuff we already knew. JP/JR and JLB said all the funny shit

Commentary would be nice but I am really curious to see Marco's full audition

To be honest I'd like to see a tour documentary more than anything.

But if they were able to give us all of the options, that'd be kick ass!

ReaPsTA

I'd want to see all the Mangini audition stuff.  Particularly the jam.

Other than that, commentary.  Please.  DT's commentaries are great.  I'm still sad they stopped doing them.

JoeG

I voted for commentary, but I'd love to see more of Mangini's audition as well.

Cedar redaC

Remember the "Making of SDOIT" video on youtube? I want the ADTOE version of that! (mainly, I just want to see Inspiration corner...)

Plus, I lost track of how many times one of the guys would be in the middle of a cool story, only to have Portnoy basically interrupt them to tell us a tidbit about as particular moment about a song, and then we'd never get back to the story one of the guys had started.  That was kind of annoying.

But anyway, I'd definitely want the commentary, as I'd love to hear the five talking now since we'd get more of the group dynamic instead of one guy basically controlling the conversation like a moderator.

?

I'm interested in some studio footage and a "making of ADTOE" documentary would be a great idea.

BlobVanDam

Commentary. The documentaries are usually pretty general stuff, but the commentaries are awesome. It's nice to hear the informal banter of the band, and you learn more info. I found out so many extra things about SFAM from the LSFNY commentary, such as JP's commenting on his choice of guitar tone, or MP pointing out the Metropolis nuggets. These are things you don't really get in a documentary.

MoraWintersoul

I voted for tour documentary, even though I'd really like the commentary too. It's just that I KNOW the docu would be interesting, while I'm not so sure about the commentary. Like I said in another thread, what gave life to the 5 years / lit commentaries is the fact they were shot a long time ago so there was plenty of reminiscing. Here, well... "oh yeah, here's a show we shot six months ago...................... Nice solo, JP".

I know it's not the same, but the people who want a "Making of ADTOE" would have their needs partially met by the commentary, since they're going to play the whole thing and probably talk about the song creation processes a lot during those very songs if they do the commentary.

As for "Mike was a moderator"... geez guys, the dude's just talkative. Plus, he has the best memory ever when it comes to remembering years/months and something, so the history of DT is pretty sharply defined in my mind as a timeline thanks to his contributions to the commentary.

Zydar

Yeah I thought about that too with the commentaries. The ones they've done so far was with a couple of years intermission (except LSFNY), so they could look back on their different clothes, hair cuts, and things and laugh about it. I don't think they'll be too keen on doing commentaries for a show they've just done. "My God I can't believe you wore those pants?! Yeah dude, it was last month".

But I still want commentaries ;D

Oh, I get that, but the constant interruption of other band members, when THEY are telling interesting stories relating to the history of DT, was fairly annoying.  That's all I am saying.

Cool Chris

The commentaries are also great because you don't generally get to hear a band's insights in to one of their own concerts. Maybe after the fact, but never while they are watching it along with you.

Of course the LiT/FYiaL DVDs were extra cool because of the time that had passed. Think about watching something, anything, you did over 10 years ago on video, and what thoughts and memories that could evoke.

They have had some great documentaries on recent releases, and we have a lot of in-studio stuff (though it would be neat to see them now with MM); and I am not interested in any more drummer audition footage.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

johncal

Some DVD's allow multiple camera angles. I'd like to be able to watch any of the guys for the whole concert.
