This is a tad strange:

In the thread for favorite 10 songs, The Great Debate got 8 votes to Misunderstood's 4, but in this thread, for favorite songs from 2002-2011, Misunderstood has 17 to The Great Debate's 5.

I imagine that must mean Misunderstood's more broadly loved, but with less fervor.

The people who like The Great Debate really like it. The people who like Misunderstood must have it in their top twenties, but rarely their top tens, so it rises when all of the early songs and a fair chunk of the later songs are subtracted.

That said, I was part of both Misunderstood's 4 in the last thread and its 17 in this thread, so don't let me second guess the 13, because what do I know? I think everyone should vote for it in every thread!

Oh, it's good to see it loved, though. Not all that long ago it was loathed. And people used Metropolis as a stick to beat it with, of all songs. I distinctly remember reading a post that said, "Look at how much Metropolis does with nine and a half minutes and look at how badly Misunderstood squanders it." I don't even remember who it was who posted it, and it wasn't in those words, but it didn't make much sense to me then and it certainly doesn't now. That must've been 2004, so Train of Thought era, but that post has stuck with me. Whenever I'm comparing 21st century DT to the early stuff it's always the comparison I reach for. Even though it was outperformed by Metropolis, the amount of love Misunderstood gets nowadays never stops feeling like a victory.

And while we're comparing, I'll always maintain that Misunderstood, lyrically, smashes Metropolis' back doors in. Consensually. But brutally.
