I've got some sacrilege for you - I've never heard Raw Dog. It seems that it's almost mandatory in this fanbase to have heard it and mocked it relentlessly. Or defended it, if you're the 1%. Me, never heard it. Wonder if I should.

Yeah, go ahead. If you like it, then you just discovered 8 new minutes of good music; if not, then you can make fun of it with the rest of us, which is also enjoyable. Win-win.

I try to listen to it at least once every four months, just to keep myself aware of its existence.

SeRoX

Ever since I heard that song I pretend that DT didn't create this stuff.

Come on... it could have been worse... Raw Dog could have been the lenghty instrumental breakdown of the 17-minutes epic single A Rite Of Passage...

0:22 gimme a break, is my computer lagging?
0:40 ohhhh ooky spooky
1:31 this is shaping up to be not TOO bad
1:35 lol nope
2:00 yawn
2:13 okay this looks kinda nice
2:37 I'm pretty sure I heard this riff before in their discog...
3:45 I'm halfway in and so far it looks like everything people normally criticize DT for - both valid points and things they rarely do - coming to life.
5:00 well, the solos were nice, but it's filed under "prog wankery"
5:11, not sure whether I like what they just pulled out of their asses.
5:37, Jordan, I know where you're going, stop, PLEASE.
6:00, is my computer lagging again?
6:50 shit, this again >.<

Is the sudden ending a pun on PMU or is it a mistake?  :rollin

Quote"DT's heavy songs aren't all that heavy in the wider scheme of metal"

Our point of reference is "the wider scheme of metal", which is all of metal. Compared to the heaviest bands in metal, obviously DT isn't that heavy. I don't even know why you're arguing this.

Yeah, but I could always say that in the grand scheme of Metal, extreme metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Strapping Young Lad and even Unexpect get too heavy, often to the point of unlistenable. Of course that's all opinion.

But honestly, I'd say that in the grand scheme of Metal, DT's heaviest songs are pretty much in the middle, revolving somewhere around the level of Thrash. Whereas bands like Queensryche and Motley Crue would be on the Lighter side of Heavy Metal, pretty much Hard Rock, even with some of their heavier stuff. DT is significantly heavier than that.

theseoafs

Mora, the ending is intentional. The fact that they did the same thing back in '92 doesn't do Raw Dog any favors. :lol

I enjoy it for what it is, but to be honest, I kind of like to think that it was just Mike Portnoy going stir crazy.

Quite the opposite.

I was hoping I'd like it  :-\

theseoafs

Eh, don't worry about it. One disadvantage of DT's widely varied back catalog is that there's bound to be something you don't like.

Also, looking on the bright side, there's little to no chance it will ever be played live.

MoraWintersoul

Pfffft, there's plenty of Dream Theater that I dislike which can and will be played live, so it's not like I'm getting away from it (aside from having little to no chance of ever seeing them)

i know :P its just, as a fan of extreme metal, i even find it hard trying to make it through their whole "agony" album in one go. so i thought it would be funny to show someone who finds SYL to extreme :P

Gadough

I can't take this thread title seriously. :lol

Late to this party, but:

IMO, Falling Into Infinity is a very underrated album and, for my money, I love Derek Sherinian with the band. His work on A Change Of Seasons and FII, to me, was stellar. I like all the songs on FII and can't understand why it's generally seen as a "lesser" DT album. I prefer it to anything past Scenes...

While I'm at it, as awesome and incredibly talented as Jordan is (and he most assuredly is) I prefer Derek as a replacement for Kevin.

Well, thanks for the recommendation, but in FA's case, from what I've heard, at least they have a concise melody going on with the strings, and the music, although extremely fast, is still technically proficient. You can still hear all the parts really well. In a lot of SYL songs, some parts come off as just noise.

And besides, if you don't consider SYL to be extreme, then that only proves my point all the more, that every single person has their own point of reference to measure "heavy" by.

Tomislav95

If you want something extreme, listen to Origin. They are great IMO but hard to listen if you are not fan of extreme metal.

Yeah, not my cup of tea. Divine Heresy and Fear Factory are about as extreme as I'll listen to.

Don't like The Glass Prison
Ministry of Lost Souls is among my favorite DT songs, and best song on SC
I like Constant Motion, especially the vocal tradeoffs and the instrumental section
I like the Status Seeker
You Not Me and Burning My Soul aren't that bad
JP's solo in The Shattered Fortress is among his best solos, especially shred-wise> The song itself is great too
6:00 is the worst song on Awake
Octavarium is among my least favorite albums
I'm indifferent towards Trial of Tears

That's all I really have for now

This thread is sacrilege.

I see no harm whatsoever in a thread that asks folks what opinions they have that greatly contradict the DTF consensus.

Just to clarify, I don't see the harm either when it's done constructively.  Saying a song sucks, which I've seen many times in this thread, isn't constructive.  That's pretty much what my original post stated.  It isn't so much what people say, but how they say it.

I agree that a little more tact would be nice but you and I, as well as everyone else, is smart enough to know there's an implied "in my opinion" at the end of comments like those.

Ooh, this looks fun. Well:

Awake isn't at all that special to me. My second least favourite DT album, only "beaten" by the obvious. Don't care for Lifting Shadows, Voices or Space Dye Vest.

Status Seeker is awesome!

What's so special about Kevin Moore? Yes, really.

Ithankyou.

I've hurt my head, wondering what you've said. He sent the spirits tumbling down the hill, and even the waves won't carry him away.
