Yeah he does, with a funny accent. He is not terrible, he is decent. James LaBrie is a better singer than he is.

On a related note, the band did a great job (I stopped watching though) but the guitar player needs to improve his tone. Master Petrucci would not approve of that crappy tone. What the hell is he using, a solid state amp or something?

Flacracker

It sounds like he doesn't know the actual lyrics and is just singing what he hears.

He sounds like modern LaBrie (with a super strong accent).

However that's not necessarily a good thing.

Only listened to Metropolis (well the first half anyway).............he's awful. Started out pretty good then just lost it really quickly.

When he's singing the high notes in full voice he does. When he's doing the gritty voice, he sounds nothing like LaBrie.

Tis BOOLsheet

LaBrie has frequently used a "gritty" voice-- see Awake, and many live performances. He sounds like him. He just isn't as good really.

I don't understand what you're getting at... When did I say he didn't use it frequently?

You are wrong. That's what I'm getting at.

Listen to the dude's voice when he does the gritty parts in Take The Time, like, "Take the time, reevaluate". He sounds nothing like JLB. As soon as he hits a part like, "I won't waste another breath" or something else of the sort, that's when the quality is almost identical.

I can't access YT now.. is he Italian? I know a guy who sounds like JLB and he started this DT tribute band sometime ago...  he has shitloads of pictures with him too... and a very lovely guy :)

he has a very thick accent.. broken English... so I thought...

TheGreatPretender

Lance King has a similar style to JLB. They don't sound exactly alike, but they're fairly similar.

Actually, according to Lance King, JLB took his style from him, back when they were friends in the late 80's. Or at least that's what my friend who knows LK personally told me. I don't know how true that is, but I have my doubts.

I really like Lance King... and his style... but I chuckled at what your friend told he said...  :lol

Nick

I mean he's alright, but has the band ever considered hiring Nicky Spanjaards?

tofee35

Yes.

He is enough like Labrie that it helps the band sound like Dream Theater. As a DT cover band, that's the goal I'm sure. For me the singer either makes or breaks a good cover band. I think he does the job well enough that it doesn't distract from the rest of the band's performances.

Back in mid and late 80s, James was originally performing Glam rock/metal songs with Coney Hatch and Winter Rose. There is no recording from Coney Hatch but James himself confirmed those songs were vocally very hard. And Winter Rose as most of you know that it's fucking great example of glam rock.

Winter Rose was better than anything Motley Crue or Poison ever put out, IMO. A little too sappy lyrically, but musically, way better.

I was going to correct you saying 'he" when you should have said "she", then I noticed you said that the covers were good and realized you were talking about the OP.

To TheGreatPretender, has anyone ever said you look sorta like Rowan Atkinson? I dont mean it in a bad way.

TheGreatPretender

No. No one has ever told me that. But hey, as long as you don't mean it in a bad way, it's cool.
