I find it quite interesting that whenever a thread appears for songs that seem to be disliked by the majority of the forum and which are often, in other contexts, called bad or bland songs (SS, BMS,...), then the vast majority suddenly seems to like this song. With so many people expressing their love for SS, I am kinda wondering why it is badmouthed in so many discussions.

This exactly! Maybe the dislikers don't want to come to this thread...

Scorpion

Make no mistake, I don't really like the song. I was just wondering where the rather vocal haters had gone.

Jaffa

I've noticed that too, Scorpion.  I think part of it is just that when a thread is made specifically about a song, it feels rude to come in ranting about how terrible that song is.  Like, with so many people saying nice things about a song, people don't want to be 'that guy' who comes in and stomps out all of those positive vibes.

I love it.... but that doesn't mean I can't understand the hate....

I have no problem with Charlie's voice and style... actually I see a of similarities between him and Michael Eriksen... whose voice I totally adore...

I don't really have that problem. I mean, if people were posting stuff like "lolstatusseeker" or "dominicisuxx lol rofl", then I'd get it, but if a thread is there for the discussion of a song, then I go there and post my opinion, whether it is a positive or a negative one and I think that others should do so too, otherwise the thread paints a very skewed image.

I've always loved it, as well as that whole album.  :heart

Song is great, especially the reworked live intro during the '93 shows.  Back in the early days when I was craving more DT (after discovering I&W) and WDADU had not been in wide enough release, any bootleg with this song made my day.  Loved absorbing as much DT as I could, and this song has a special place for that reason, as it was the ninth DT song I heard (the other 8 being on I&W of course)

My two cents on WDADU. I've been a fan since Images and Words and When Dream and Day Unite was the second album I heard from them, played for me by my college roommate who was a fan since the Majesty era. At this point in time all the DT fans had were the Majesty demos, WDADU and Images and Words. My first listen of WDADU was largely positive. My only gripe was the production, it was quite tin-can sounding and Dominici just didn't have the chops Labrie had. But aside from Dominici, I loved WDADU. During this time I can't remember a lot of fans downplaying WDADU. In fact it was kinda the other way around. I remember the reception for Images and Words being hesitant. It took a little time before the fans started to really grasp the "new" sound and singer. However Metropolis was an instant hit for the fans I remember.

Fast forward to today. I don't know many DT fans who would give WDADU the time of day. It's a bit surreal, especially when I hear long time fans of the band also ranking the album way way down on the list. Almost 20 years since I heard this album and it's still high on my list. In fact when I heard ADTOE I had constant flashbacks. In a lot of ways, ADTOE sounds more like WDADU and Images and Words than any other of their albums. It again just makes the hate for this album surreal for me.

As for Status Seeker, I remember finding the opening cheesy but the live version a much better rendition. It has a huge QR vibe to it. It's a great song. But it does sound as if it was written later than the rest as it does seem a little bit removed, kinda like how BMUBMD is a little removed from ADTOE.  :tup

edit: oh! and........    "I wanna blow you now!"  :coolio

I didn't vote because I didn't see an 'it's okay' option.

Ruba

The third best song on WDADU and a top 20 DT song.

And one of my favourite DT songs to sing.

SuperTaco

Great song with a terrific chorus and some really strong solo work from JP. I'm really biased though because WDADU is my favorite DT album.

SS is one of those songs I forget about for a while, but once I hear it again I wonder why it wasn't in my regular rotation all along. My favorite part of the song is JP's guitars in the chorus. There's that awesome distorted riff that's kind of underneath everything else, and there's the clean signal right in the middle. Honestly, The reason I enjoy JP's style so much is because of his use of non-distorted guitars to augment his sound. There are tons of clean parts on WDADU, usually mixed in with riffs or solos. As a guitar player myself, this is a huge thing. It sounds so perfect and so right to have that extra dimension.

Good song.  And since there is no poll option for this opinion, I shall not vote.

wolven74

I don't like it. In fact the only song I like on WDADU is Ytse Jam, and I wish they'd rerecord that with a better producer.

Mladen

How about ''It's an OK song'' for an option?  :-\

MajorMatt

Great song, but this version...

They have done far worse in the song department.

RaiseTheKnife

May I suggest folks here also listen to Terry Brown's REMIX, which gives the song more depth in the bass and fuller tonality in the guitar, as well as a much improved overall sound.

The remix can be found in the rare Status Seeker single or for you literary types, it was featured on a companion CD (the proud work of one of our DTF faithful) that was packaged with the Lifting Shadows book.

THIS is the version you should be listening to.

Good song, which wasn't an option...  :-\

The bottom line (with a dollar sign) is this, I think Status Seeker is a great little rock song that's well put together, well written and everything, but its simplicity is what turns people off I think. And admittedly, simple songs are not the reason why I listen to Dream Theater. But as it stands, it's a pleasure to listen to.
