THIS JUST IN: Dream Theater's next album to be called "The Count of Tuscany Part 2: Scenes from a Memory". It will tell the story of The Count of Tuscany but from the point of view of the aged wines (and 76 minutes).

So we're doing this ?

Dream Theater XII : A Time To Reflect

Metropolis Pt. 3 :neverusethis:

In all seriousness, fuck yeah, it's good to hear they're being inspired. Maybe the song will be about something relating to jet lag. :lol

The Letter M

Very glad to hear the band is doing some writing on the road, first time since the Scenes tour, as Scotty has informed us. For those of us who have wished for something as refined as the albums of SDOIT and back, we may get that. If they write now, refine the music later in the studio, and then record, we'll get something that's more polished than we have been in the last 5 albums.

I think we can look at another masterpiece like SDOIT, with a new member in the band adding his input, on the road, and then in the studio. Personally, I'd love to have a double album again!

Well! I was more thinking somewhere between September and January as the ballpark for the start date, rather than a duration, but May-ish / June-ish would be right if they started in September, yeah!

Keeping in mind they've got to have a break after the tour, plus John Petrucci'll be needed to help make the DVD... I think Feb. or March is a tad pie-in-the-sky, whether they were to write beforehand or not.

Would be lush, though!
Don't forget JP's G3 Tour in October. I wonder if everyone will help in putting the DVD together. It seems like too large of a task of post-MP DT world to put onto one person. I bet we'll get at least Jordan and James into the fold when that is filmed and is starting to be edited and put together as a final product.

A double album would be ace about now ...

They could have two discs - Each disc with 6 songs on

Each song ten minutes.

Making 12 tracks and two hours ( 12 x 10 minutes )

Too bad it wouldn't come out in 2012

@OP:  Great news!  Potentially they could slip some of the new stuff in the new dvd's special features.    :corn

Better yet, the point of view of the bodies inside the wine barrels. A concept album about zombies! :metal

:tup  White, red and pink zombies.   :lol

Call it "A Baker's Dozen", with each egg having a different album cover painted on, with the exception of the 12th one which is cracked.  :lol

Radiohead wrote OK Computer on the road and that album is fucking brilliant. I'm all about writing when the creative bug bites. BRING IT!  :hat

Cool. I actually can't wait for the world to go into "new album" mode. You know with all the speculation, small updates, big updates like artwork and eventually track listing, the fake snippets from LaBrie's solo albums, leaks, people banned for spreading it.

I love the smell of the internet before a new album in the morning.

Still though I think this is a little to soon.

Don't forget the $200 deluxe edition which includes the Vinyl, eight-track & cassette.

Still, they're only starting to write it, and they're still on tour, so they're not gonna bang this one out in 3 weeks like they did Train of Thought. We definitely won't see it until 2013, which would be consistent with DT's one album every 2 years streak they've had going since Train of Thought.

What? No reel-to-reel or wax cylinders? No deluxe edition for me!   :P
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
Quote from: TAC on July 10, 2024, 08:26:41 AMPOW is awesome! :P

What? No discussion as to whether the new album will continue with the track cycle? This one would have 11 tracks, right?

Well, I'm excited! Maybe DT12 will be a sequel to SDoIT.  :hefdaddy

Seriously. I can't wait for new updates. Nothing got me more excited for ADTOE than the BAI snippet. That shit was dope.

I never understood or believed this whole 'only writing in-studio' thing.

There's no way they don't come into a session for a new album w/o some ideas and riffs ready to go, and I think it's foolish to do it that way anyway.  Why close your mind to songwriting except when you're on-the-clock?

This really isn't newsworthy to me as I'm sure the guys write things all the time but only start assembling and elaborating once they arrive together.  Sure, a lot of new stuff gets written, but it feels like a lot of people think they don't actually do anything until they arrive.

Each era of the band is so incredibly recognizable. When DS joined the band and FII came out, it was a profound change. When Jordan joined, there was yet another profound sound change and direction. When MM came on board, the band did have a sense of change but it hasn't been fully realized. I think once this new album comes out that is when the new era will truly be ushered in for DT imo. We'll get to hear what this band comes up with as a whole and my bet is it's going to not only be truly different, but it's going to blow us away in the best of ways. I can't wait!

Completely agree with this.  Mike Mangini has the skills to pay the bills, and I can't wait to see what his mind comes up on the next album.
