Before anyone freaks out, yes, I think this is a great song, and unlike a lot of people, I don't think the intro goes on too long, but I simply like several dozen DT songs better.  In fact, when I recently did an updated DT top 20 just for fun, Octavarium was one of a handful of songs that just missed making it.  It's great, but DT has plenty of songs that are better, IMO.  Who's with me?! :coolio

Zydar

I'm with you. It's a good song, but I wouldn't have it in my Top 20 either.

Storm Rider

8V is in my top 5, but I agree with you that the intro is a little bit longer than necessary.

SeRoX

Disagree. I think octavarium song itself sums up DT's musical style. It has almost every element DT has possessed musically. So, it's in my Top 20, probably top 5.

???

Reread my earlier post again ;)

Mladen

It's top three for me, I just love every minute of it.

But at the end of the day, I don't see why anyone should be pissed if someone's top 20 doesn't include a song that is generally considered to be beloved. We all have that one song (or sometimes more) that everybody seems to adore but it doesn't work for us for some reason.

I don't think I would place it in my personal top 20, but it no doubt deserves all the praise it gets. :tup

lonestar

Not my favorite, but its pretty high up. One of these days I'm gonna have to make a list.

Octavarium is kinda meh.

I like Someone Like Him just fine. Medicate is amazing. I like Full Circle up until the verses, then it just gets irritating. Intervals is cool, but nothing I haven't heard from them before. The climax is just kinda annoying, and seems like they just ran out of ideas. Razor's Edge is fine, but I liked it better when it was called "Losing Time / Grand Finale."

I suspect some of my vitriol towards Octavarium probably stems from the heaps of praise it gets from everyone else, but there it is. I enjoy the song, but it's certainly not one of my favorites. I enjoy In The Name Of God and In The Presence Of Enemies quite a bit more, and all three songs would sit in my top 30-40 range. A Change Of Seasons is right around there too, for what it's worth.

Honestly, I think I'm just tired of Dream Theater's longer epics in general. At the same time, I love Six Degrees and The Count, so really, there's no pattern here.

It embodies everything that was wrong with Dream Theater at the time. All of their other 20+ minute songs are infinitely better. Shit, LtL, BAI, BiTS and other 10+ minute songs are better. I think the album WDADU is better.

I honestly don't really care for it.

Every time I hear it I think of their influences, and not Dream Theater, but when I hear something like A change of seasons, all I think about is Dream theater.

Agreed.

The only part of the song I like is the last few minutes.

I'm in that boat. A fun listen with some really cool sections but kind of lost its luster as a whole.

Lowdz

I like it. It may not be a top 20, but I've never gone through and ranked the songs (I know, weird huh?).
I don't rave about it and the intro stopped me from playing it alot when the album came out as I felt it went on a bit. 8V isn't an album I get drawn to much, but when I do I enjoy it. And I feel the same way about the song.

I'm with ya chief. Great song, but I know it's not in my top 20. And I agree that the intro is fine as is, tho the one on Score is a bit much.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

it is in my top 5...
I love the song and the album it comes with it

lithium112

Top 3 song - specifically the Score version. I could listen to that intro for like 20 minutes by itself. This song is just completely full of amazing musical ideas and never drags or gets boring. Someone Like Him has one of coolest bass lines in JM's catalogue, Rudess has one of the coolest DT solos in this song. And TRAPPED IN-SIDE THIS! OCTA-VA-RI-UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM!!!!!

Sigz

Probably not, but I've never actually ranked my top DT songs.

Kev, can you help us out by listing the songs you think are better?  That would be cool.

millahh

It's in the bottom quarter for me.  I really don't care for it.
