Other than playing a song without any flaw, there is an "intense" matter can be considered. I think there is a difference between "singing a song" and "living a song".

A Change Of Seasons from Metropolis 2000 DVD is the most intense live performance, IMO. Captain just lives it inside of him.

Your thoughts?

I think what you mean by "intense" could best be described by the other aspects of music other than singing right notes and right rhythms; dynamics, articulation, and a general understanding of when to apply those tools with respect to the text/words. Am I right?

SeRoX

I simply mean: living a song while singing, conveying emotions and making listeners cry, be happy, be sad... whatever.

I think that means what I mentioned earlier plus a couple other things that help build drama. There's also the theatrical element in a live performance. A vocalist has a lot of power if he or she has command over all those tools, but most importantly knows when and how to use them to connect to an audience.

Anyway, I certainly don't think of Dream Theater when I think about all of these things.

Honestly it seems like JLB has been the most vocally intense on this present tour. He was great on SCORE but physically wasn't very lively.

Ruba

Another Hand/The Killing Hand on Live at the Marquee.

Disappear on the Budokan DVD
Intense would not be a very good way to describe Disappear
Intense doesn't always have to be heavy headbanging shred as fast as you can.. Can be intense with emotion too lol

As for me.. I'd say octavarium on score, in specific the intervals section

SystematicThought

JLB sounds like he is on the verge of tears on Disappear on LaB. So I agree

vhguitar009

I agree, Octavarium on score with the scream before Razor's Edge is incredibly intense

Score, specifically Innocence faded. Labrie's performance at Marquee was also extremely intense probably my favorite besides Score.

I think his performance of ITPOE on the Chaos in Motion dvd is similar in this regard .  It might not get noticed as much though, cos ACOS is a bit more highly regarded as a song

The Dark Eternal Night, I hate the distortion on JLB's vocals, but live he does awesome things that I would have preferred.

To go to the other end of the spectrum as far s intense goes, I'd say his performance on The Glass Prison from the Gigantour DVD is fucking intense.

Needs to be played live again ASAP. Hopefully in time for a new DVD.

I'm glad I got to see that plus This Dying Soul

I have to by how I would define 'vocally intense', which would be JLB sending chills from the front row all the way to the back row of the balcony, and that would be Beneath the Surface this last tour. If you were there, you know.

I wish they would play TDS live again.  James didn't really do it justice on LAB, so I think vocally now he could absolutely kill it.

jcmistat

Pretty much all of Score. Octavarium especially.

Jay.Ess

Vacant on Score.
Looks like James' eyes were welling up..the song is extremely personal for him. Gets me every time.
