It's cool to see EDM getting recognition in general.

He gets far too much hate. I mean, he's not really good by any means, but there's far worse stuff out there.

Something that musically shallow shouldn't be acceptable anywhere, in my opinion.

What does 'musically shallow' mean?

It's what I consider music for the braindead. Every time I hear a song of his or something like it in a bar it's nothing more than irritating background noise. It's a chore to even find something good about it.

...so basically music you really dislike is shallow?

im not a fan, but id rather see skrillex win his categories. a guy who came from nothing, rather than the same old pop stars
So, you can come from nothing and play some of the worst 'shit' known to man and then deserve awards which should be presented to people who are actually musically talented?
Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man

im not even a skrillex fan, i just dont go with a hipster view on all music i dont like.

Say what you want about Skrillex, but it requires legitimate talent to make that music.
Not sure if serious...

Okay, go make some dubstep music and let me know how it goes. I'll be here.

I'm pretty sure he can recreate a Skrillex song by just overlapping sound effects from his mouth.

Jamesman42

It's pretty ignorant to just write off people who like something you don't. I don't get how people like Zook can stand Symphony X at all (since I think they suck shit) but he sees something there that I don't. Not a hard concept to grasp.

The challenge was to make the music, not to come up with a clever zinger.

You know, because no one's ever made fun of Skrillex before either.

Just listened to the Shrillex song. If this came on the radio, I'd keep it on.

Skrillex is one of the worst excuses for music ever.

I just listened to about thirty seconds of his song that won.   I am now officially a grumpy old man.

Did it get to the drop before you turned it off?

What?  Drop?  What do you mean 'drop'?  JUST GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

I think "drop" is the new word for "breakdown", because "breakdown" isn't cool anymore and is one too many syllables.

Drop doesn't have much to do with breakdown...breakdowns are still called breakdowns..

I was hoping they would win , but I had a feeling they wouldn't  I was hoping the grammys would get past the high school popularity contest and grow up but i guess not.  It was kinda like watching the movie nerds and hoping the nerds would get back at the jocks and the lead nerd would get the hot blonde chick!

I didn't watch the show since I found out DT lost before it started but I overheard my wife watching it in the next room and heard dave grohl give a speech i quoted below..... I almost felt like he was trying to ding DT for being highfalutin fancy pants  when he said its not about being perfect and not about sounding absolutely correct.  He probably wasn't but that was my first reaction ....

"To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of making music is what's most important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do. It's not about being perfect. It's not about sounding absolutely correct. It's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here (your heart) and what goes on here (your head). ... Long live rock `n' roll!" Dave Grohl after Foo Fighters won their fifth Grammy, best rock performance for "Walk."

It would have been awesome if FF gave a shout out to DT and said that DT deserved it more than they did. That would have really made people's heads turn. I was kind of expecting a DT shout out when he went off on that tangent about learning your instrument, etc.

Indeed. Very few know what goes into making music like that. Give it a try.

Taste is subjective though. That's fair.

What actually does annoy me about the Grammys is the "distinction" between best rock song and best rock performance.  Especially when the nominees for both category are EXACTLY THE SAME.  Just an excuse to give the Foos two Grammys? :P  tbh the Grammys haven't really been relevant in the past decade at least.  At least they're trying to pay attention to that indie crap like Dream Theater, The Suburbs and Bonny Bear that people have been rumored to like.   :)

As for Skrillex, there's nothing wrong with him, IMO.  Little formulaic, sure, but fun in the right settings.  God forbid people like music that you don't.   :lol

@Lonestar, I'm just having some fun with you man. I asked that knowing you probably wouldn't know what I was talking about. :p It's hard to define, so....

The drop occurs at 0:41 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSeNSzJ2-Jw&ob=av3e

And here, much more obviously at 1:19 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AyJyoiH5-k (this song is alot better IMO)

Not trying to nitpick, but Skrillex didn't "come from nothing." He used his status as the former singer of From First To Last to kickstart his career.

Honestly, I like dubstep, but it's the one genre I can listen to and be like "....yeah, I totally see why some people hate this." :lol

Another insane thread.
People fighting childishly, while they can do it privately and spare us the crap  :corn
Anyway, Dave's speech, it sounds genuine coming from him and it's a good message overall.
We'll never know what effect could have had, but even if they had taken the prize, I can't imagine DT becoming popular, as the others nominees. Maybe it was all a combination of certain events that brought DT to the academy awards.
Regardless of all this, my admiration towards the band is still intact.

Mladen

What's a skrillex?

Man, this forum has some weird discussions going on these days. I don't see how anyone could get pissed at Foo fighters. I'm sure they worked their ass off to record their music and put an album out, and there are loads of people that enjoy what they do, although I'm not one of them. So if the academy decides to give them four Grammys, good for them, what can they do about it?

It would be nice for another artist to win one of those four categories, but who are we to talk? As a matter of fact, who are Foo fighters to talk? I don't expect them to go out and say "Sorry, Dream Theater should have definitely got this award instead of us, we're gonna win the other three anyway.''

rude boy

''is there anyone that you're looking forward to hear perform tonight?'', the brief moment of silence after the question- priceless!

Dellers

THAT song won? I mean, c'mon. I'm not lying when I say that it's the most boring rock song I've heard the last year! Well, it was shorter than 3:30, that must've been it. What's really the point of awards when it just reflects sale numbers?

DT has charted in the top ten on Billboard for their last two albums. They aren't a household name but anyone who regularly plays Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band is at least minutely aware of them. No one here seemed to express a desire for DT to gain new and as yet unseen popularity for the Grammy nod, they just were rooting for a highly-deserving band that's long overdue for legitimate music industry recognition to get just that on one special night. Also, "the academy awards" is the Oscars.

I think it was easy to see that FF were going to take this out.  I picked it from the first time I saw the nominees.

Isn't it what rock is about?
Tha fanboys must stop being so passionate about the loss of the Grammy. And stop watching it from DT's perspective. Why should Grohl even mention DT when he won? Because it's your favourite band? There were 78 awards. Let's suppose that every award had 5 nominees(some had more). That is 4 artists that lost * 78 awards= 312 artists. DT was just another one. Big deal. They don't need a Grammy to acknowledge that they are good at what they do.

Yeah, I mixed that, the Oscars are still 2 weeks ahead  ;D
I think everyone at DTF doesn't mind the band getting more fans through a nomination like this one.
By gaining popularity, all sides win I suppose.
