I know what I want from DT12

Super Dude

I know most people are gonna look at this and say I'm just moaning for DT to go back to their old sound, but that's not really the point of this idea. I was listening to some ADTOE tunes just now and I realized how morose they all sound, even the ones that aren't necessarily so and are just the usual prog orgy. It made me think of 6:00 and Innocence Faded and how, even though the subject matter of both were kinda depressing themselves, the tunes themselves were actually kinda "happy" and energetic. I wish we could get more of that again.

BlobVanDam

I think of IaW for happy and energetic a lot more than anything from Awake (the two songs you mentioned), but I won't disagree with the sentiment at all.

I've always thought of This is the Life as rather upbeat, even if it's largely minor. Same with Bridges in the Sky: a very fun tune and a perfect opener.

And Beneath the Surface is sort of the definition of "happy song, sad lyrics".

TL

Much of the music in Breaking All Illusions feels pretty upbeat to me.

Yeah, I guess. It's the scale these songs tend to be in.

Definitely...I'd even be down for another New Millennium.

SystematicThought

If we could get an outro like Innonence Faded on DT 12, than I would be happy

Omega

I think we all know what we want:

  • A frickin' bass solo
  • A long, beautiful epic that makes you contemplate the very meaning of life ala Octavarium

snapple

Dream Theater 12: The Seduction

1.) Setting the Mood ft. Morgan Freeman on spoken word (Petrucci) 3:69
2.) Baby - This is How You Make Me Feel (Rudess) 6:69
3.) Tuvan Belly- Dancing (only samples of Tuvan throat singing on vox) 10:69
4.) Taking Off All Distractions (Myung) 16:69
5.) Sweet Kisses (Petrucci) 1:69
6.) Make Love Time (Rudess, Petrucci, Myung, LaBrie and samples from Take The Time) 8:69
7.) I'm Not Cuddling (Mangini) 4:69

Every song would have a sexy groovy bass line. Except for I'm Not Cuddling. It would be the heaviest, proggiest song to ever exist. Imagine taking Metropolis, Breaking All Illusions, LTL, BITS and condensing it to 5 minutes and it still sound amazing. You know why? No guy wants to cuddle.

at least that's what any news of a new album by DT makes me feel.

Actually, I'd be perfectly happy if DT laid off the epics for a little while. If SC and BCSL are what happens when DT forces epics, then I don't need another DT epic ever again.

Ħ

I'd like an epic for DT12. Actually, what I'd really like is not going to happen. If they tried to write albums like SFAM or IAW, where song length was kept relatively short, and they released their epics on EPs like with ACOS, I think that would be best.

BlackInk

I want Mangini to close his hi-hat by DT12.

Super Dude

I want a natural epic. As theseoafs said, the recent efforts sounded kinda forced, so I'd like for them to write an epic only if it feels right and they're able to really make it work, rather than just piling things on to one song until it's the monster of all messes.

I want them to do whatever the hell they want to.

I don't really have a specific desire for DT 12 other than being good since I like a variety of their albums rather than one specific sound from them. But on the subject of the OP, I find most of ADTOE to be much "happier" sounding that 6:00. In fact I find it strange you consider 6:00 to be "happy" sounding. Energetic maybe, but to be honest 6:00 is one of my least favourite DT songs so I'm not really desparate to hear anything particularly like it again. I definitely understand Innocence Faded though.

For me though Breaking All Illusions is one of the happiest sounding things they've ever done - I literally couldn't help but smile when I first heard the intro and the whole thing still just sounds incredibly happy and energetic to me still.

Jamesman42

If I was to make a list of things:

1. Shorter album. 60 minutes or less.
2. 8 or more songs.
3. No songs over 15 minutes.
4. At least 1 instrumental, either short and concise like Hell's Kitchen or all over the place like Erotomania/SoC.
5. Mangini involved in the songwriting.
6. No songs for the sake of it (ahem, BMUBMD).
7. No synth solos.
8. Keep some overall positive feels to a good chunk of songs (I felt like they climbed out of the depressive hole of SC/BCSL with ADTOE).
\o\ lol /o/

Super Dude

I'd love an instrumental. I'll put that on my list as well.

I agree with the older sound, but I do want them to fill up the disc as they always do, that's something I always value from them.......they don't cheap out on us lol

Dillster22

You Not Me full version, with the fully restored 17 minute JMX flute solo.

Just mix it up and try some new thangs.

And have fun, etc.

I seriously don't see what's wrong with BMUBMD, it's among my favorite tracks in this album (and it says something because it's easily one of my favorite DT albums), but each to his own I guess.

Super Dude

Yeah I don't love it, but it's still a fairly entertaining song. In fact, there's no song on ADToE that I actively dislike.

THIS.

although I have to admit that I kinda agree with the OP - a happy song would make me happy

I like to think of this as:

ADTOE - SFAM
DT12 - 6DOIT.

A Dramatic Turn of Events was an exploration of Dream Theater's traditional elements, just like Scenes from a Memory. In their next album, I'm 95% sure Mike Mangini will have some kind of input, and that means a lot of experimentation, just like 6DOIT.

YtseJam

How about JM turns his compressor off and plays that bass along with Mangini with some balls. No offense to JM but he mutes himself out of the equation so much It's all keys and guitars this last album. There's no real presence from JM and MM. I would like to hear some serious attitude from these fuckers

the idea of this makes me excited already. SDOIT is my favourite album.

Am I the only person who thought The Best of Times was a (musically) happy sounding, upbeat song? Cause the OP made it sound like their last happy sounding song was on Awake. haha. And when the lyrics come in on Octavarium, that's also happy sounding.

I agree with whoever said they want DT to do whatever the hell they want to do. That seems to be working for them.
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

TBOT's intro verse/chorus was definitely "happy" ie. in a major key. There wasn't really anything like that on SC, and Octavarium had quite a bit of it. My favourite "happy" stuff would have to be stuff on SDOIT, like ATC/ATCR. Their happier stuff since then hasn't captured that same feel for me.
