I'm afraid not. What I'm talking about is in completely different genres.

That's what I mean. In my opinion, it's a very important factor for progressive music.

But would you mind listing a few examples, anyway?  ;D

Am I the only one who thinks a song can't be "positive/uplifting" if the lyrics that come with it are anything but? Having a major key doesn't seem to me to determine that something is uplifting.

I know what you mean. I guess Solitary Shell isn't an uplifting or positive song then - but it would surely be if it was an instrumental. I just don't know a better word.

So I don't mean positive songs, but positive melodies. Or something. It's definitely just the music I'm talking about.

Not really. I listen to a lot of music which is uplifting, and don't necessarily need DT to do it. 99% of what I'm listening to is very positive, I don't care if DT's percentage ain't.

Any modern prog recommendations in that style?

Like I said in my post, Pagans Mind.  :justjen

Yeah, you said it's epic and uplifting and I said that for example BITS is TOO epic.  ;D But I will check that out.

And of course I know a modern prog act that does it the right way - Neal Morse.

?

To be honest, no, I don't miss happy songs. They're not bad but I listen to a lot of dark music (one of the reasons why Awake is my favorite) and I don't mind if there isn't any positive lyric or melody somewhere. However, I wouldn't have a problem with some happy DT songs on future albums, Images & Words is a great record and it's very optimistic.

Which is sad because if one would ask me why SDOIT and IaW are my favorite DT records I had to say because they're so bright and warm.
I find 6 Degrees pretty dark actually, even the lyrics are about mental problems and other personal struggles.

A song like Blind Faith just screams colors like green, blue or yellow to me. You're right, rest of disc one is probably darker, but disc 2 is totally bright for me!

And Awake has Caught in a Web, Innocence Faded, The Silent Man and Lifting Shadows off a Dream, which are all totally what I mean composition-wise.

I find the first fast section of TCOT very uplifting (the "let's go for a drive"part). And I'll agree with the others who find lots of uplifting parts on ADTO, especially BAI.

To each his own. I find that part quite ominous. That "shit's gonna go down soon" feeling, you know?

the entrance of the guitar solo for Surrounded is a masterstroke of genius, such an uplifting dynamic.  Thanks for reminding me about this side of DT.
Surrounded is probably just the best thing ever

True. My favorite DT song. I wonder how big KevMo's role in the composition of it was.

Well he wrote the lyrics and I assume he did a good deal of the composition
