Anyone else missing truly positive / uplifting songs?

Hey guys,

while I absolutely love ADTOE, there's a part of DT's music that I miss on the album... The uplifting aspect of DT's music (not the lyrics) that was displayed in songs like Surrounded, The Silent Man, Innocence Faded, Strange Deja Vu, (mainly) About to Crash, Solitary Shell, I walk beside You or the middle part of The Best of Times (to name only a few). It's basically a matter of the song being quite fast and in a major key. While there are some major key moments on ADTOE, no song really gives me that positive feeling that all these songs seem to express (either too slow, too epic or in this oriental kinda style). You know, like, when you listen to the "his shadow slowly fading from the waaaaaaall" part of Surrounded - this is an incredible moment (maybe even my favorite DT moment) and it gives me the chills because of the positivity. This feeling is kinda missing on ADTOE.

This is not something that I consider to be a matter of "quality"; it's just a style thing that I find quite sad as I love to be taken away by a good happy, poppy melody.

Anyone else?

breaking all illusions? that song makes me sooooooo happy.

Yeah, well, sure it's positive (especially the lyrics and all), but I really mean that musical style of these other songs. Maybe I'm just talking about the "poppy" side of DT (and I'm probably one of the very few people who miss that  ;D)

Nekov

I'm right with ya. DT's been missing it for a while now.

Millais

wouldn't mind a solitary shell influenced song again! (if i'm completely honest)

Icebear

I agree, too. Making dark/heavy/aggressive sounding music is par for the course when it comes to bands with a metal connection. Making happy/uplifting music and still staying within the sound of the band, that's trickier. And DT have some amazing "happy" moments throughout it's catalogue. I'd sure like some more of that in the future.

johncal

I'm sure as it is, the metalheads are pissed at the sound of the new album.

SystematicThought

What was the last song that had a positive uplifting message before ADTOE?

I'm STILL not talking about the lyrics or the message.

The last song that contained the musical direction I'm talking about was The Best of Times (Rush-like part).

darkshade

The OP is talking about the music, not the lyrics.

In any case, probably SDOIT

Nope, TBOT and before I walk beside You.

theseoafs

This is the Life? It's certainly got a proggy edge, but it's quite positive/poppy. Same with Beneath the Surface (with the exception of the lyrics).

Chimpi

The ending to Only A Matter Of Time comes to mind.  The major chord progressions from the end of the last chorus into the guitar solo and into the end of the song offer a very fresh and positive vibe.
Love it.

Lotion

I thought about it a couple of days ago, and made a playlist with exactly those songs you mentioned.

I've always liked The Answer Lies Within.
That's the song that immediately popped into my head when I read the thread title. It's a nice, slow, uplifting song with a feeling that hasn't been replicated since.

Gotta love TALW. Damn, Octavarium was such a good blend of all sides of DT!

@ theseoafs: Yeah, they are indeed poppy, but they're just quite slow and lack energy compared to the mentioned songs.

JimmyJava

I for one LOVE The Best of Times. When the song really kicks in with the guitar intro, it's so uplifting and feels fresh and positive. The outro is great too.

Nekov

After thinking about it the part in BAI that goes "Searching out, Reaching in...." is really uplifting and happy. And so is half of TBOT. But it's harder to find this kind of stuff lately in their music.

Which is sad because if one would ask me why SDOIT and IaW are my favorite DT records I had to say because they're so bright and warm.

I find Bridges in the Sky strangely uplifting.
Haha I actually agree and the line "crossing bridges in the sky, on a journey to renew my life" is insanely epic in truly uplifting way.

I feel the same way about this part of BITS. There are a lot of uplifting sections on ADTOE, such as the chorus of BAI and that part at 5:51 gives me chills and makes me raise my hands to the sky every time. :metal

OT: If you wand Epic and Uplifting, check out Pagan's Mind. It's like that's the only thing they know how to write. :tup

Agree :metal

As far as wishing for more of that.....no. I'll agree that Bridges in the Sky is uplifting, and so is This is the Life.

Haha, yeah, exactly, glad I'm not the only one who loves that tiny little part. That's as close as this album gets to what I mean in the original post. It's like a tiny nod to Surrounded and I love it.  :hefdaddy

Bongasti

I agree that there are uplifting songs/sections on the new album but not uplifting in the same way as, for example, Surrounded. That "happy" aspect is what I miss a little bit.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I certainly missed uplifting DT after Black Clouds (The Best of Times was just cheesy, although the guitar solo at the end made up for it big time), but then came A Dramatic Turn of Events.

Evo

Glad you started this thread, I've been thinking this for the longest time also. While I can dig the darker element at times, I've always gravitated towards the upbeat/uplifting stuff a billion times more. You mentioned some really good examples, my personal favorite include Only A Matter Of Time, the final part in Take The Time, the final section in Innocence Faded, Don't Look Past Me, etc.
Whenever I see discussions about what people would like for the next album, this always comes to mind instantly, more than anything else.

RaiseTheKnife

the entrance of the guitar solo for Surrounded is a masterstroke of genius, such an uplifting dynamic.  Thanks for reminding me about this side of DT.

Dellers

Not really. I listen to a lot of music which is uplifting, and don't necessarily need DT to do it. 99% of what I'm listening to is very positive, I don't care if DT's percentage ain't.

DebraKadabra

Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

Vajra

This Is The Life
Beneath The Surface

Very positive sounding songs. (despite the lyrics of BTS)

Any modern prog recommendations in that style?

Dellers

I'm afraid not. What I'm talking about is in completely different genres.
