A Dramatic Turn of Events vs. The Whirlwind

I like them both quite a bit, but have to give the edge to ADTOE because there are no tracks that I feel compelled to skip, whereas with The Whirlwind I can't get into the final track at all.

Funny enough, here on DTF, DT is winning. I posted the same poll on Progarchives, and The Whirlwind is winning there.

The reason I put these 2 albums is because I assume most people have checked out The Whirlwind, considering Portnoy is on drums.

I wouldn't assume that.  For one, I seriously doubt every Dream Theater fan checks out every side project of every current and former member of Dream Theater (I know I don't), and for two, it is likely that DT fans who don't care for Transatlantic checked out one of their first two albums when they first hit the scene in the early 00s, didn't care for, and thus didn't bother checking out The Whirlwind.

The Whirlwind

The Whirlwind is one of my favorite albums ever and my official Christmas and other Holidays album. And I think ADTOE is horrible.

Just a question to the OP: how is the addition of MM the cause of DT becoming a supergroup? None of the arguments you presented for that is compelling. Two (and arguably three) of the members still have humble origins, they had become massive way before 2011 (if you refer to sales or status in the music community), and they've been playing whatever they wanted since the beginning. And what about your line "The Whirlwind proved they are more than your average prog supergroup, and really make some epic prog rock"? I read and reread it and it makes no sense whatsoever. In your mind, the Whirlwind proves that Transatlantic is more than the average supergroup because they "make some epic prog rock"? What did they make on their first two albums? Gangsta rap?

Too much old school prog, if i want that i listen to old genesis or yes albums.
ADTOE on the other handis my album of the last ten years.

Interesting statistic:  The Whirlwind is the most heavily played album in my iTunes library since 2009.  A Dramatic Turn Of Events is already a very close second.

I don't think The Whirlwind is that great from start to finish. I like a lot of the meat, but the opening and closing tracks sound lackluster and uninspired to my ears. Generically epic, if that makes any sense. "The Wind Blew Them All Away" is the worst chorus Transatlantic has ever written.

I generally don't skip a single track on ADTOE (except BMUBMD occasionally, which is appropriate here because it's also track 2), and I'd actually place most of it (at least more than half) in Dream Theater's Top 30.

While I prefer The Whirlwind, I agree that the opening track isn't quite up to snuff.  Had it been as awesome as the first ten minutes on both SMPTe and BAF, I might prefer it as a whole over those, but since it isn't, I don't.  The opening melody following the minute-long buildup and intro (that kicks in around 1:30, I think) isn't nearly BIG or triumphant enough.

Really?  I like the opening of The Whirlwind a LOT more than the openings for the other two albums.  For both of them, once they get going, they are both terrific songs.  But the first minute or so of each, eh...

I remember we had some kind of poll or discussion way back when, and everyone was praising the first track of TWW, and I didn't see what was so great about it. It's good but definitely the least best (along with the boring last track).

I know what you guys mean about the opening segment around 1:30 after the intro, I kind of feel like that was Mike's fault as if he wasn't being loud enough with the drums, at least that's how it seems to me; but then I feel the rest of Overture / Whirlwind is great, and a fantastic song.

I bought The Whirlwind having not heard much of Transatlantic. On my first couple of listens I can't compare it to ADTOE. They're totally different.  ADTOE has too much of a metal edge and feel to compare.
