I wouldn't want Dream Theater to turn in a nostalgia band not unlike Iron Maiden (and I adore Iron Maiden). As much as I prefer Images to anything they did in the last five years, recording it all over again now would be pointless. I want a DVD that showcases a band that's still going strong and does their own thing, always in different ways and styles. That would make me sit through two sets focusing heavily on ADTOE material, which I didn't like, instead of one "regular" and one "nostalgia" set, but hell, I still want the first option.

To be fair, even Iron Maiden plays a lot of their newer stuff at concerts though. I mean, promoting The Final Frontier, they only played El Dorado because before the album was released, that was the only new song they were allowed to play. But they only played 2 songs from Number of the Beast at that concert and that was during the encore, and Run To The Hills wasn't even one of them. And other than that, they pretty much played songs from Fear of the Dark, Brave New World, Dance of Death and A Matter of Life and Death. So I wouldn't exactly call them a 'nostalgia' band either. Or at least, they're really trying not to be.

You're right, the example I've given didn't quite fit what I said. They did at least two "nostalgia" tours in the past five or so years though - they did the Somewhere Back In Time thing fairly recently, and now they're doing Maiden England. On the latest DVD, however, there was a lot of newer material and I found that enjoyable, even though people slag Maiden's new stuff.

Frankly, I think The Final Frontier was amazing. I thought it was just as good as Brave New World.

I'm hoping they'll include the entirety of A Dramatic Turn of Events on the new live DVD.

Someone asked JP this at a Meet and Greet and I believe he said they would be. I believe Progmetty asked this.

EDIT: He did. And JP said they would "probably" all be included.

Progmetty

Yeep, right here. He seemed pretty sure about it.
Do we have anyone here from Argentina going to these shows?!

Do it for America Dream Theater!

Progmetty

God help me Nekov if I don't see you on the DVD I'll cripple Messi. We need DTF representation on this freakin disc!
I keep overestimating the popularity of internet, they must have been sure of a great fan turn out when they chose South America and an intense audience, where the fuck are these guys? IF such an amount of hardcore DT fans with exist down; we would have at least had 10 people, at least, here on DTF.
But I guess I overestimate the internet as I said.

Nekov

Hahah, please don't do that, he's the only one right now that gives us a chance to win  :)

I don' think you are overestimating the internet, it's just that I know a lot of friends that'll be there and be loud and all but not becuase the are die hard fans. That's just the way we are during concerts, no matter if the band playing isn't your favorite.

Progmetty

I see what you mean. Right on  :metal

I'll base my decision on what happens in the second show at Huntington.

I'll be at both shows in Buenos Aires! Already have my first row ticket to the first night and waiting for them to put the second night on sale. I'm going with my best friend and my brother. I'm also going to the meet and greet cause hell, I can afford it right now and it's probably the only time I'll be able to do all this. (both shows in great seats plus meet and greet!)

It's shaping up to be an amazing couple of days!!! Can't wait!!! This DVD is going to be amazing.  :metal

Awesome! Where did you buy the meet and greet? I'd love to meet the guys.

Thanks guys!  :tup

Nekov, my best friend bought the Meet and Greet package online so I'm not sure... but I can ask him. He told me it's sold out already though. It was USD 150 for the upgrade. (you also needed a ticket to the show)

Is it august yet?  :)

Perpetual Change

First off, hi everybody

I'm been excitedly lurking this thread for awhile, and you can bet I'm going to be checking out the Buenus Aires set-lists as soon as those shows are played. James said that there's going to be something special in store for us, and I'm really curious to see what that that is. I love that they'll be playing all of ADTOE, and there's at least a few classics I hope to see them mix in:

Pull Me Under- We still don't have a great, up-to-date live version. I suppose the Budokan version is good, but I've never been a fan of the whole "warped" style. It kinda messes up the naturally awesome momentum the original song has going.

Learning to Live- James' performance on LSFNY is great, and full of fight. But it's still very much coming from James that was still suffering heavily from his vocal rupture. I'd like to see the song performed by the post-Score James. And if it's between this and Metropolis, we already have as good of a version of the latter as we can get I think.

Caught in a Web- I don't think this has an official DVD performance, right? They've played it a few times this tour. I'd love to see it on DVD.

Those are my big picks. I'd also love to see "Lines in the Sand", "The Count of Tuscany", and basically anything from the first disc of SDOIT sans "Disappear" get a DVD release.

What four or five songs would make everyone's personal "wish list" for this dvd?

ResultsMayVary

No matter how unlikely it is, I REALLY want to see:

The Glass Prison
Caught In A Web
Learning To Live
These Walls
A Fortune In Lies

Jamariquay

A smudge off-topic, what makes the Budokan version of Pull Me Under "warped," exactly? I remember hearing that at one point they sped up the tempo, but the speed of this particular performance sounds the same to me (admittedly, it's been awhile since I listened to it). I know that Jordan changed a few of the keyboard parts too, but it didn't sound like that big a change. Again, however, it has been awhile.

Nekov

I only hope they play Blind Faith. I'll be very happy with that alone.

The Budokan version of PMU isn't the warped one; the Bucharest version is the warped one. You'll distinguish soon enough  :D

Ohhh, good to see you!

I don't think it was the warped version of PMU on Budokan, was it? Could be wrong, a while since I've watched it. Do agree with your rationale on Learning to Live, though. If they're set on alternating between the two, LtL is by far the more important one to get footage of. Caught in a Web I approve of, too - although I've seen it twice in four gigs, so I'm a little more casual about that one.

My wishlist contains, among others...

6:00 - Only one (slightly rubbish) recording in existence, plus it's got excellent drums so there's a lot of Mangini-watch.

These Walls - Only appeared on a fan club DVD, fantastic song, massive live, would be incredible.

Acoustic Break - Because it's one of the things that's helped make this tour especially special, and I'd love to see it committed to tape. Plus, it'd probably contain Beneath the Surface, which I love to bits, one of my favourites on the album - joint 1st with Bridges and Backs, but those are two I'd say we're definitely getting, so I can't get as excited about them.

Wither - Great song, not been filmed yet - wap it in.

Prophets of War - Potentially great song in a live environment, all we have is a relatively sterile studio recording, it's not been played on a DVD tour yet; let's wap it out and give it the opportunity to live.

The Mirror / Lie - Probably not on this tour, but that could do with a recording, surely?

And I won't at all object to the following, not for any big reason - just down to a few cosmetic details that I'd like to have easy access to.

The Root of All Evil - Purely thanks to the last thirty seconds.

War Inside My Head - Because it flows well out of On the Backs of Angels, and I'd like to hear Petrucci's backing vocals.

NADS - Ditto, but remove the flow thing, and instead just say that the Chaos in Motion footage was a little sketchier than I imagine this gig will be.

I don't mind if we don't get any of them, because we've seen them on fairly recent DVDs - War Inside My Head twice in succession - but if we do, then wahey, good stuff.

My wishlist (ADTOE aside):
- Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy: Can't ever get enough TMW/FT videos, I wanna see it on the BluRay baby, or-fuckin-gasmic. Multi angle option? Wet pants.
- Metropolis: I do not need to explain why I'd like Metropolis on the BluRay.
- The other acoustic set songs from the first leg, Silent Man and Wait For Sleep.
- In The Presence of Enemies or The Count of Tuscany.

I'm not a big fan but I did see this song live and you are right on the spot. They even put the lyrics on the screen so everyone was singing along.

Oops. I was getting Bucharest's warped PMU mixed up with Budokan's. That said, Budokan's performance isn't really ideal for me. James sounds kinda strained throughout, probably because he was jetlagged and because it was one of the more challenging songs on the set played at the very end of an extremely long show. Such a definitive DT classic could still use a much better performance, I think.

And Rob, I am sure we will get the acoustic break. I sure hope we do! I'll be terribly disappointed if we don't. And since they're filming over two nights, I'm hoping we get an extended four-song acoustic break instead of the usual two-song one.

I don't think they'll be two entirely separate setlists on each night - that'd run for four hours, and I don't know if there'd be room for that on a Blu-Ray. Plus they've got to do something that people will want to watch in one sitting. My guess a couple of months back was something like this...

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. 6:00
3. This is the Life / Build Me Up, Break Me Down (rotating)
4. A Rite of Passage*
5. The Root of All Evil
--drum solo--
6. A Fortune in Lies / Ytse Jam (rotating)
7. Outcry
--
8. Wait For Sleep / The Silent Man (rotating)
9. Far from Heaven / Beneath the Surface (rotating)
--
(A.) A Nightmare to Remember
10. On the Backs of Angels
11. Breaking All Illusions
(B.) The Count of Tuscany
--encore--
13. No idea! In the Name of God?

*Maybe rotating with Wither.

...but that's very Rudess-era heavy, and two months out of date. Revised, I'd say Bridges in the Sky, On the Backs of Angels and Breaking All Illusions are shoo-ins. BMUBMD and Lost Not Forgotten have a good chance, the two acoustic songs are a little more touch and go, and there's an outside chance they'll play the whole album.

Tend to agree with Perp inasmuch as I reckon they'll bring the acoustic break back - and if so The Silent Man's got better chance than any of the others. They'll want something off Black Clouds - and if it's just one song, The Count of Tuscany's got the best chance, probably as an encore, and I'll add Wither to the set as an outside bet. Don't think they'll bring back the drum solo, but they might do just to push Mangini right to the forefront.

Plus a sprinkling of the songs they've been bringing out this tour. 6:00, These Walls, maybe not the WDADU songs... and look at that, it's all gone Rudessy again! Might just be cos I don't have as much affection for the nineties stuff, might be because lots of it's been on DVD before and most of the ones that haven't aren't in the master setlist so far this tour, or it could simply be because they haven't been playing it, but on the evidence so far I'm struggling to cobble together a balanced running order.

In truth? I've got no idea. Nothing I'm putting together sounds that plausible, to me.

Outside bet? I'd like Misunderstood.

Looks like it, but don't expect that'll prevent anyone from standing up. Hammersmith Apollo 2005, everyone rose out of their seats the second the intro tape rolled. And that's an English audience - animated enough, we like our rock, but South American audiences are, by all reports and evidence, the liveliest the world's got.
