A compromise would be like what was done for Live After Death or Operation:LiveCrime -- film a couple nights, use the best night as a basis, but sub in a song here or there from the other night(s), where the performance was better.
Bingo.

Driving home tonight and listening to DT, I had this idea running through my head that they should do the live DVD of the entire year or touring and call it A Year in the Life.  It would be combining the titles of The Beatles' A Day in the Life and their own This Is the Life.  I think it would be the perfect title for such a DVD.  Who's with me?? :coolio

I honestly think they won't play LNF and TITL until the next album's tour, at the very least. But I could be wrong.

Which is an unfortunate coincidence considering they're probably my two favourite songs from the album. :lol
(although I guess it's a 3 way tie with BITS).

Hopefully they might be in rotation by the time they reach Australia?

It wouldn't surprise me at all. They do that all the time with at least a couple tracks from each album. The Shattered Fortress and The Best Of Times from BC&SL, Prophets Of War and Repentance (except that one time) from SC....... OK, well, they've done it twice anyway :P

EDIT: And Disappear from Six Degrees. And probably at least couple tracks from FII, but I don't feel like looking it up right now.

No offence but I could not think of anything worse than this idea.

I want to be able to put a bluray in, filmed in full HD on one night at a great venue with a great crowd and a killer setlist then sit back and enjoy the show as it was as if I was there. I cannot stand these tour diaries or edited, half arsed clips of songs filmed in all sorts of different audio and sound quality over a section of a tour. It creates no atmosphere or experience whatsoever in my opinion.

I look forward to a budoken style dvd/bluray from a 2011/12 single concert.

Kev's idea is good, as I feel that these awesome two years of touring need to be somehow recorded and accounted for, but I'm with you as with the single night-DVD.

Hell, we can have both, can't we? A full BLU Ray show on the first DVD and A Year In The Life on the second! Someone already said that, I'm sure!  :)

It's killing me that we don't have a live performance of TiTL.  It's my favourite song from ADToE and also one of my all-time favourites.  Very majestic and moving and awesome.

I hope they will play The Count of Tuscany again so it will be on the new live dvd/br :)

Maybe they'll do one especially special show and return for one night to the An Evening With format. That'd be cool.

If they're gonna do it, I hope they hurry it up... or at least post something and tell us yes or no. of course we all know how long it took them to say anything about the drummer stuff, which I hated every minute of! so for right now I guess I'll just take a  :chill and wait  :mehlin

Tis BOOLsheet

I seriously hope they make one. This tour has been absolutely amazing in every aspect for the reasons I've posted on this forum numerous times. The band has reached another level of musicality and has been re-energized. Furthermore, the shows and the production thereof have been the best I've ever seen from them by FAR.

Well if they continue with this pattern then at least we know that we will all be happy with the result.

I really hope they include a commentary audio track again.

Ooh, I'd like that too. That's another thing with having a new live DVD, I forgot that we might get some cool extra features, like some sort of documentary, or at least audio commentary.  :metal

Scorpion

Excellent suggestions all around. I don't really care what's on it as long as it contains Beneath the Surface and Breaking All Illusions. If I could choose, I'd probably go by The Letter M's suggestion, it's pretty awesome, but I'll take whatever comes.

Especially with how outspoken the band has become in the last year, especially JLB and JP. And it would be awesome to have MM on a DT Commentary!

I think they might do a full-on DVD. I mean, let's look as the pattern...
                                                 IAW - LATM
                                      AWAKE                     DT13
                     FII - OIALT                                            DT12 - (Live album)
SFAM - LSFNY                                                                          ADTOE - (Live album)
                     SDOIT                                                   BC&SL
TOT - LAB                      SC - CIM
                                              8VM - SCORE

The Circle speaks for itself... *(I know there's no WDADU nor ACOS, but just amuse me and go along with this...especially since I've only had 3 hours of sleep and clocked in to work at 4:40 this morning...)

Okay, this certainly looks interesting... but I kind of doubt its validity. If Dream Theater were really releasing live albums in a pattern kind of way, wouldn't it make more sense that ADTOE is I&W again (if we do go by the circle stuff) - it has been compared quite often and I must say that it certainly fits more than comparing ADTOE to SFAM...

Or am I reading all of this wrong anyway? But if there is not connection between LSFNY, then this kind of makes this whole circle rather redundant, don't you think? I'm not trying to diss your post, but... can you explain what you mean in a little more detail?

:lol I wasn't serious at all, and as my disclaimer notes, I was pretty tired and under-slept this morning (still am). The albums across from each other weren't meant to be comparisons in ANY way shape or form.

I was simply using the theory that DT have mirrored themselves in terms of album releases where Octavarium was the turning point:

SFAM - 9 scenes (technically you could say songs, as the track list on the back cover lists 9 track times)
SDOIT - 6 songs
TOT - 7 songs
8VM - 8 songs
SC - 7 songs
BC&SL - 6 songs
ADTOE - 9 songs

And so, if DT12 and DT13 both contain 11 songs/tracks, it would expand upon this pattern by mirroring the number of songs/tracks released on FII and Awake. It also just so happens that both BC&SL and SDOIT didn't get live releases after their respective tours, but TOT, 8VM and SC all got live albums, and there's hope now that a live album will be released from the ADTOE tour.

And if I wanted to edit "The Circle" to include WDADU, it would look like this:
                                                                       [ WDADU ] [ DT15 ]                                                         <--- 8 song albums
                                                  [ IAW - LATM ]                            [ DT14 - (Live) ]                                  <--- 8 song albums
                                             [ AWAKE ]                                                              [ DT13 ]                        <--- 11 song albums
                         [ FII - OIALT ]                                                                                        [ DT12 - (Live) ] <--- 11 song albums
[ SFAM - LSFNY ]                                                                                      [ ADTOE - (Live) ]                      <--- 9 song albums
                         [ SDOIT ]                                                           [ BC&SL ]                                               <--- 6 song albums
                                      [ TOT - LAB ]                        [ SC - CIM ]                                                             <--- 7 song albums
                                                         [ 8VM - SCORE ]                                                                               <--- 8 song album

-Marc.

Okay, understood.

On a side note: does anyone else think that the word crackpottheories looks really weird when written?

I really hope they include a commentary audio track again.
Oh yes.  That would be outstanding.

They should do 5 commentaries. One member's opinion on each track.

Myungs would still be silent.

I don't know why, but this totally look like a DVD cover for me (without the chinese writing of course)...

:coolio

Hopefully, they'll actually be playing This Is The Life by that point :p

Why? It's the 2nd worst song on the album. They should just play one of their good songs like LNF.

I went to the last european gig (luxembourg) at the meet and greet. I was able to talk with John Petrucci about the forthcoming dvd, he said that it will be filmed during the south america leg !
