A friend of mine passed away last week after a 3 and a half year battle with brain cancer. The day after I received the news, I listened to This is the Life. It brought me to tears. It seems that this song seems to be at the bottom of the like list on ADTOE, but it has gained new respect for me. I see it as a powerful piece of music that is full of emotion. And when I listen to it now, it reminds me of that friend, so in a way, his spirit carries on. I imagine if I had listened to that, the same response emationally would of happened.

Sorry for your loss. It is a good song.l

I love this song. Very powerful in the end.. "after your gone". I can see how it is emotional, sorry for your loss.

It's a truly great song imo. It's songs like This is the Life that have not only a powerful and profound meaning behind it, but it points out a great flaw that a lot of people have. It's something that not too many people really talk about or will deny hardcore.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and I'm not trying to sound cheesy here or anything, but I honestly believe he's onto another chapter in existence. It's always sad times for those that are living in this world that have to deal with those that have moved on in this way... This is a time for sadness and celebration in my very honest opinion. Sad that he is gone from your life, but should be celebrating that he's made it to that next level of existence to move on.

Take care my friend.

My condolences.

This Is the Life is an AMAZING song and one of my DT favourites of all time.

My condolences

This is the life is a fantastic song. It is so mature and covers a great topic. I love it!

?

TITL feels currently the most underrated ADTOE song to me, and yes, it IS very emotional.

PS Head

This is the Life is probably my second favourite song on ADTOE.....very powerful, beautifully sung and very well written.I could never understand why it ranked so low on everyones song rating of the new album.A DT classic for sure.So sorry to hear about your friend losing their battle to cancer.

It turned out to be my least favorite on ADTOE, but it's still really good. Great lyrics, fantastic solos, some nice soft bits and of course, that last chorus is epic. I have a slight problem with that verse before the solo - it just doesn't move me at all, it could have been so much more beautiful and touching, but it's kinda meh.

And I'm very sorry for your loss, vulcandj. Stay strong.

My condolences. Music is indeed a powerful force.

One of my favorites from the first spin.  3:00 to end of Gilmour's, I mean, Petrucci's solo is one of the most beautiful and emotional passages DT has performed, IMO.  But what do I know, I like Anna Lee.  Glad we have music like this to help us thru the rough times.

Just wanted to thank everyone so far for the kind words.

Keeping the question "what will be spoken of me?" in your mind. This is the kind of message teens need to hear

I'm very sorry for your loss.  Although I don't get the same feeling from TITL that you do, I know what you mean.  The first time I heard The Spirit Carries On was right at the same time that one of my good friends suddenly and unexpectedly lost his wife.  To this day, TSCO brings tears to my eyes.  So I can definitely see how when a song and event coincide, the song can stand out for you personally in a special way.

Sorry for your loss  :(
Song is awesome.... I love the fact that DT have always messed with my emotions... I'm addicted to that....

The power is in the Taurus Bass Pedals!

ZKX-2099

It is one of their top ballads for sure.

I should also mention that The Spirit Carries On is the only song that has made me shed a tear... one tear... but fuck I didn't think I had it in me.
