I've only see DT live once and it was the opening show in SF this tour. I don't think it could have gone any better. I expected a great show but it surpassed that. I got lost in the lighting many times and got mesmerized seeing each band member nail their parts constantly smiling especially Mangini. The vibe was amazing, finally getting to see my favorite band play and brought my friend though he has no experience with Dream Theater. My only minor gripe is that I didn't get to hear BAI but I really wanted to hear Outcry because I was iffy about that song, not anymore.

I can think of a couple of especially special live moments.

From the first DT show I saw, seeing them trainwreck the instrumental section of Metropolis a few times was actually very cool. I think most people thought it was intentional. JR seemed pretty unhappy about it after the show, but to me that's half of the fun of seeing something live. Knowing that anything can happen, and that you can see something you won't see on something like SCORE.

At the second DT show I saw, the outro of TCOT was one of my best live experiences. As soon as that "acoustic" came in, I got chills. JP played it a little bit slower than on the record, and combined with the lighting etc it had so much atmosphere, and was just an unexpected awesome live moment.

El Barto

I haven't seen them do anything that really floored me.  Seeing their last tour from front and center was pretty cool.  The Score rendition of Glass Moon was pretty damn cool, as well.

What did knock me on my ass was JR's impromptu keyboard solo during JP's meltdown at the Downy LTE show.  Probably the greatest thing I've seen in 29 years of concert attendance.

MasterLomaxus

I loved A Nightmare to Remember on PN09.   It opened up with the thunder and keyboards, then it kicks in and the curtain drops.  That was wild!  Of course that's the only time I've seen them live.

without question it was the moment the curtains were pulled back at RCMH to reveal the orchestra

this

really the amazing experience was hearing Six Degrees straight though live, let alone with an orchestra, let alone at Radio City, let alone the fact that it was the last show of the tour, let alone the fact that this show was going to be released as a DVD.

fuck yea

yeshaberto

let alone how meaningful it was to the band and how "on" they were that night

If I could go back in time it would be the my #1 concert to see at this moment.

Jealous of all you bastards who were at RCMH for Score.

For me, Slaughter of the Damned.  Best 3 minutes of any concert I've ever been to.

*goes to play Chaos in Motion*  Unfortunately, CiM doesn't do the actual experience any justice.

Seeing them in the Early days on the I&W tour up close.

Also the 6SOIT tour in Boston when Mangini jumped out and did a dual drum solo with Mike Portnoy.  How's that for forshadowing.

The only out of the ordinary thing I saw from them live was when during the last tour they were playing Lie, and during the second chorus they just stopped playing and turned off the lights and let the crowd sing. I had never seen them doing that.  :)

24 July 2011 High Voltage - Victoria Park - London

I'm in the middle part of the front row.... Petrucci comes to the stage, sees the incredible crowd and makes that emotional face.... Under a Glass Moon starts...  I lose my mind....LaBrie comes out and sees me air drumming... he points at me and I point at him back...lol... eye contact with Petrucci and Rudess all throughout the concert.. a surreal experience....

the next day I go to Twitter account and write to the Pirate..... saying  "I haven't slept since you pointed at me at HVF yesterday... You can't be real James LaBrie... God bless you, your voice and your loved ones!"

and he writes me back....

"Thanks Senem, Wait for Sleep"  :omg:

true story....  *sigh*

Running into Jordan in the city of Vienna in July, the day before the show at Gasometer.

- The ethereal Learning to Live jam in Cleveland in 2006
- JLB's pants ripping in Cleveland during Gigantour... "Under an Ass Moon"
- JLB handing the mic to Petrucci during a song in Albany this year and JP going "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH"
- One-off show in Columbus during the Iron Maiden tour. It was really intimate!

I feel like Petrucci made eye contact with me multiple times, its surprising how powerful that can be.

Seriously.... I can't compare it to anything else.... It took me a month to recover....

I would have to say PN09 at the Greek Theater. During the instrumental section of Beyond this life, Steve Vai and Dweezil Zappa joined JP and JR with his Zen Riffer and jammed for like 25 minutes. It was awesome.

This, and also the When Dream and Day Re-Unite show at the Pantages.  I was also in the front row/pit for the show at the Greek when they opened for Satch.  That was pretty sweet- it's the only time I can remember seeing them play 6:00.

Knguro

I saw them back at the Chicago Theatre in the PN'09 tour, with my dad, we both were in shock after the concert was done.

Seeing them my first time at a very small club in FL.  It was on their FII tour, and there were about 100 people there.  I walked up to the stage...it wasnt crowded at all, and stood right next to JP.  The stage was 2 ft tall, and I was about 1 ft away from him on a very small stage.  My best memory was him playing the UAGM solo about 6 inches from my face.   :metal

I've only been to two DT shows, one at the Warner Theater in DC this year, and one last year, the last show where they opened for Iron Maiden. Little did I know that it would be the last show that DT would play with Mike in the U.S. , which makes it pretty special.

But the highlight of my DT live experiences so far was definitely Breaking All Illusions, and the animation set to "Dream is Collapsing" followed by BITS. So awesome.  :tup

An Evening With Dream Theater

Orpheum Theater - Boston - 2002

They did 6DOIT in it's entirety and played for over 3 hours doing most of Images & Words, a bunch of tracks from Falling Into Infinity and A Change of Seasons as well.

Opening for Iron Maiden in 2010, at the quaintly named Jiffy Lube Pavilion outside of Washington DC. There was a series of severe thunderstorms rumbling through the general area, so the sky was dark and gloomy and generally ugly. Dream Theater takes the stage and goes into "As I Am."

The split second JP hits his first note and the music goes BOOM....the skies opened up, raining so hard it reached under the canopy where I was sitting.

Iron Maiden? Yeah, they kicked ass that night. Dream Theater made it rain. :D

That was the one I was at! Pretty amazing.

Hello everyone, I think that every time JP gets set for one of his great solos, it's a magical moment for me.  The opening of the tour in 2009 was also great to see and Mangini's drum solo last October in Montreal was in fact the best performance by a drummer I've seen in my life and that with the fact that I've seen 10 times the professor Peart in action.

In Cleveland at the Agora, I am satisfied to say the least.

The first time was definately the greatest experience since I had never seen them before. It was the Train of Thought tour and they were smokin' ofcourse, opening up with As I Am which is just great. The whole gig was very metal-y, comparable to Budokan's.

After that I saw 'em on the 8VM tour which was really good as well. But the gig on the Chaos in Motion tour was REALLY good. I saw reworked versions of Lines in the Sand, Blind Faith etc. That was totally awesome as well.

Least great gig I have to say was on a festival with Mangini. Just didn't dig it that much, maybe it was because of the festival factor. Maybe it was because MP wasn't behind the kit and on stage. I've always felt a very powerful connection between MP and the audience, and as great and welcome as Mangini is, I kinda missed that. But that can all grow, glad the band is going strong.

Mosh

When I went for a bathroom break during Panic Attack.

beeing in rome at the 4th of july,

Drum mic failure before the show @Loreley Amphitheater, this tour.

Also, Caught in a Web live. Same show.

Oh, maybe Hollow Years extended as well

And Petrucci failing the volume swells in TCOT, that was hilarious :P
